What effect does the CHDK have on your camera's warranty ? Shooting RAW is one capability that they should have given, in an otherwise loaded camera.

I see that the FZ35's prices have dropped somewhat since last week, while, for some reason, while most vendors seem to have hiked prices for the SX20.. Good that I got mine for $349..!

guys, a real quick question. need to decide in a day as to which camera to buy

requirement: touchscreen, budget <$300, good performance that is faster startup times, shutter speed should be fast. good image quality, photo won't be printed. just views on lcd. will be used majorly by mom and fiance so style and looks are important.

few options: sony t90, panasonic fx580, nikon s70. samsung have a model but not too keen on it.

let me know your views.

thank you

Please let me know if there better options in that price bracket other than what i have mentioned.
Hey, I got myself Olympus SP 590UZ, 12mp, 26x optical zoom camera in Pune for 21K with 2 years warranty, 4gb card, 4 rechargeable cells. The image is good at ISO 64 upto 200. Macros have come well too. Go and have look at this camera.

Nevertheless my first favorite is "Panasonic FZ 38". Its costs around 26K here in India.

Get the Sony: I always liked their touchscreen implementation.

Also, very portable, about half an inch thick, unobtrusive (especiially in black), has excellent internal software, an excellent LCD screen, a built in lens cover (so you can just stick it in your pocket, very fast ready time, very good low light performance and you can operate it with one hand.

In summary, you can always have it with you, and can shoot pictures anywhere.

Thanks for your opinion.

I went to best buy to check some cameras. i tested t90, s60, fx500. found t90 the best of all three. but haven't tested s70 and fx580. so really don't know how they are. as per reviews on net, s70 and fx580 has more noise in their images than t90 and are slower. while a couple of website have favorable reviews for both fx580 and t90. so confused.

s70 and fx580 command $50 more than t90. t90 goes for $245 other two are around $285 to $290. so was wondering if its worth it or not. i can get some accessories for the difference.

I had used sx20IS for a couple of days but returned it.

the reasons as follows:

- uses smaller lcd. others have reached 3 inch while canon still stuck with 2.5 inch.
- uses AA batteries, i prefer li-ion batteries.
- worst user manual ever seen
- just about average build quality. i preferred panny and sony's build
- slower performance compared to sony hx1. at par with others.
- takes forever to zoom. felt fx35, 590uz and hx1 faster.
- if you gonna use burst mode frequently look elsewhere.

some good stuff
- typical canon image quality
- a bit faster than competition, beaten by hx1
- good manual shooting modes
- tilting lcd. which i like.
- good lens range. 28mm to 560 mm as written on lens.

didn't check video capability. its 720p so it should good atleast. so can't comment.

hope this helps.

Panasonic dealer. This was in Nov when he did not have the piece readily available. He was pretty disappointed by how Panasonic handle things. He told me, company never makes enough pieces available and put models on website even before informing them. I dont know the current prices as I bought Olympus SP 590.

The FZ 38 has lesser zoom & available in gray for ~23k while SX20 IS is 26.5k with B&W & SP-590 for around ~21k

Hi, I have SP 590UZ which I bought last month. As renovation is going on at my place, I could not get time to go for photography. Overall with the set of pics I clicked, I am pretty satisfied with my purchase. I would not say it is the best cam but then certainly its a value for money cam. At the max zoom you need tripod or something you can put your hands on so as to avoid camera shake. It has tremendous zoom range (26-676mm). Day time pic quality is too good. It suffers at night a bit but then every super zoom suffers.

My original pick was Panasonic FZ 35/38 but then it was not available readily in India and is 5-6K dearer than 590UZ. I would say go and test all the cameras in Croma. Go through the flikr group for 590UZ. People have clicked some amazing snaps.
