re: The Headphones Thread

Hi team,
Purchased Sony Noise cancelling headphones MDR-ZX770BN at Frankfurt airport. It worked beautifully, well, till battery lasted. Battery is now dead. In fact, It could never be charged up. :-(. Battery was defective from the beginning.
Lesson learnt- If I purchase any gadget, I need to try it out, then and there.
Now I am far away from Frankfurt . Only help the retailer has offered , that I can courier it back to them, they will send it to Sony(Europe) repair center . Sony Europe is silent. Sony India never replied to my tweets.
180 USD now almost wasted...

re: The Headphones Thread

Hi,

Intend to get a set of headphones for music.
Confused over Sennheiser PX-100 II vs PX-80.

The Sennheiser PX-100 II costs twice as much as the PX-80, however tech specs wise they are almost alike.

Does anyone have any experience of the 2 , wanted to know if there is a significant superior sound quality that the PX-100 II has over the PX-80.

Thanks
Fillmor

re: The Headphones Thread

I am very doubtful about buying such thing on the basics of advertised specifications. The frequency response, for instance, is going to tell you that... it covers the range that you can actually hear, and optionally perhaps, some that you can't.

You can look at sites like goldenears, for actual measurements, and even overlay them on headphone.com, and discuss the measurements on places like SBAF. Still, though, it is difficult stuff to understand. Far more difficult than with speakers.

Many reviewers are fanboys, consumers of freebies-for review, or simply jumping on one the flavour-of-the-month hype trains at places like head-fi.

Tyl's reviews, at inerfidelity, are good: he tells it like it is.

My Sennheiser Mementum turned a year old and still performs as good as new. Mine are ivory and look very classy with the headband made of a brushed stainless steel, which meets leather on the top. The cups are hair-sheep skin and comfortable for long use. They are in every other way the best-sounding full-size audiophile headphones I've heard in a long time.

re: The Headphones Thread

My in-ear headphones just failed and I am looking for replacements.

This time I want to consider Over-Ear or On-Ear type.
Mainly listen to rap/pop music with occasional Jazz and Classical songs.

One point is that I have hearing issue that gives me fatigue listing through 'bright' headphones or speakers. So looking for headphones that are not bright sounding.

Budget is Rs 3000 - Rs 5000 (thought looking to spend as little as possible).

Sources are mainly mobile phones with occasional laptop use. Headphones would be shared between me and my son.

What are the recommendations?

Thanks

re: The Headphones Thread

Gifted myself a Sennheiser HD598 and an Fiio A3 amp. Pair these with FLAC on iPod classic and the result is pure bliss

re: The Headphones Thread

I am planning to buy Cordless Headphones specially for TV and some music as well.

I am thinking of buying Bose headsets and even contemplating Sennheiser; need your help to make me get this purchase right.

Will use extensively to watch TV programs - Panasonic LED TV and some music too. In most of the stores there are SONY cordless headphones in the range of 7999; but am not keen on SONY.

Bose seems to be an interesting buy and so is Sennheisser 165 which works out to be 13k in India. I have checked Sennheisser 120, but they have sponge instead of leather.

Look forward to your revert soon

Have you tried Audio Technica ? It's a pretty good brand but it is relatively unknown. If you are an audiophile you will love it. The ATH-M50X are really good. They are corded though. The ATH-WS99BT are Bluetooth wireless but I am not sure if you would find them in India. No harm in trying though. They cost about $250.

re: The Headphones Thread

In my life I've head audio nirvana just once. It was with a combination of my old Sennheiser HD650s and my bro's Oppo HA-1 headphone amp. Bro uses them on pair of Grados.

Gosh! Now I want those HD800s and the amp. Saving up for it. I am a Sennheiser fan thru and thru.

Try it with an OTL tube amp like a darkvoice 336/337 or woo audio wa3 and a decent DAC then. You will be totally blown away. HD650/700/800 is meant for tubes.

I've already heard the HD650s with a DAC + tube headphone amp. Bro had a Shiite Bifrost DAC and Shiite Lyr headphone amp which he had given me. The Oppo is noticeably better.

Not a big fan of schitt to be honest. They sound rather dry and uninvolving. Maybe I will give the oppo a spin some day.

Actually you're right, the Shiites are good, but not as you put it 'involving'.

Though I am old school and aware tube amps sound warmer and pleasant the Oppo was definitely better. Give it a try when possible and let me know what you think.
