That's correct. To quote The Sunday Standard -

“F-secure, a leading security solution company, recently carried out a test of Xiaomi Redmi 1s, the company’s budget smartphone, and found that the phone was forwarding carrier name, phone number, IMEI (the device identifier) plus numbers from address book and text messages back to Beijing,” the IAF note says.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Is there a better camera phone than the Nokia Lumia 1020 (barring iPhone 5s in certain situations)?

My father has Lumia 1020 and I was planning to get one for my wife as she needs to shoot pics of her finished garments at the shop and upload them online and on facebook.

A good camera phone would obviously help indoors even during low light hence my plan on getting the Lumia 1020, any other phone that's worth considering?

If budget permits, I have heard really good stuff about Samsung S5 camera. May be you could do a comparo in stores like croma etc and get a real world feel of both.

Regards,
My brother has the S5 and the picture quality was nowhere near the Lumia 1020 in low light scenarios.

I read about 2 dozen cameraphone comparisons yesterday and Lumia 1020 came out as the winner in all.

The only downside that I see is the time it takes to click a pic in succession. While for my wife's use time isn't really an issue because she has to take a picture of a finished garment on dummy (which isn't going anywhere). It does have a burst mode though which takes awesome pictures (first-hand experience) of people jumping and doing all kinds of stuff in very fast motion.

Learning how to use the camera on the 1020 is a task in itself because it has way too many options, I couldn't explore all on the last visit to my parents.

I think Lumia 1020 is what I'll buy but in case anybody has any workaround/hack to speed up the camera app then please let me know, thanks!

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

I have been using a HTC Salsa from the last three years. The phone has stood well through the abuse but it is now highly outdated and hence I am looking for an upgrade.

Now in order to make the situation clear, I am a final year engineering student who recently got placed through campus recruitment in a highly reputed firm. My father has hence offered to gift me any phone of my choice. So the budget is flexible.

I have been in the android ecosystem for the past 3 years. HTC Salsa, sister's Moto G and HTC One M8, Mother's XPERIA Tipo and Xperia Z, I have used android devices in different price brackets. So coming to the point, I was considering the Iphone 6 as my next upgrade. But after reading many reviews online, I felt the real potential of an iphone is put to use when you have multiple iOS devices, while in my case the iphone would be my first experience in the iOS ecosystem. The high price point at which iphone6 is currently retailing is making matters worse. And hence I am now confused whether to go for an Iphone or to save some money and remain in the android ecosystem.

Following are the options I have sketched down:

1. Iphone6
Confused whether it is worth the price tag, provided I dont have any other iOS device. I am also skeptical that I would like the new OS or not because it provides limited customization options.

2. Iphone 5s
Came into the picture after the price cuts in September when it was retailing around 32000 on flipkart. Though the price has again increased, I am hoping it would come down soon as the 6 is now available. So it would be a good option to explore iOS.

3. HTC One M8
Have used my sister's M8. Superb build quality and looks, nice and smooth UI and a lower price tag than iphone 6 means it is a VFM product.

4. Moto X (Gen2)
A very close friend got one a week back, and it has changed my views about android and VFM devices. Superb device and a highly competitive price.

A few more points to consider:
1. I hate plasticky feel on Samsung devices.
2. Before anyone confuses me further , I am not considering any Windows phone. My father owns a Lumia 930 and 530. Though I like the smooth functioning of the UI, I dont think it is built for me. No idea why, but I find something missing.

Now what do fellow BHPians advise here? Any help in clearing my confusion would be appreciated along with any other options available.

iPhone 6 is just the perfect device with the perfect size and build quality you can ever have. Only two negatives - Average Battery and High Price.

iPhone 5S is bang at 35k. I myself got it and using it now. Negative - 4" screen size if it matters to you + Average battery life.

HTC One M8 is at 36-37k. Very capable and excellent design and performance with great battery life. Alternatively, you may consider One E8 at 31k. Same specs as M8 but polycarbonate shell and 13 MP cam against Ultrapixel cam on M8. Don't discard it as plastic. It's as good looking, better grip and more resistant to wear and tear than the metal body.

MotoX 2nd Gen is excellent phone but is slightly overpriced. But the major con is very average battery life.

You may also consider LG G2 almost same specs as HTC One M8 at 27k or LG G3 at 36k. Very good devices if you are comfortable with LG since resale of LG's flagship is lower than HTC IMO.

If you can wait till December, you may get OnePlus One around 25-30k in India which kills HTC, LG and MotoX with its value for money proposition.

Redmi Note is very good for its price of 8999. If you need a good phone at a small budget and can manage to get one, go for it

Ericsson puts an end to Xiaomi's plans to conquer the Indian smartphone market?

http://qz.com/311198/xiaomi-just-sus...iggest-market/

It comes as quite a (pleasant, if I may add) surprise that a court in India (which is not exactly a haven of protection for Intellectual Property Rights) has acted as the protector of Ericsson's IP in this case!

My only doubt is whether Ericsson is acting of its own in this IP infringement case (it has indeed acted on its own to protect its IPR in similar disputes with other manufacturers worldwide) or whether the Swedish company is getting a little (ahem) support from certain quarters who are alarmed with Xiaomi for certain reasons?

I think it is the former, but I would not be surprised if it were the latter, either. Xiaomi's cloudy ownership details (& its deep, murky links to certain entities) and its scant regard for customer privacy by transmitting data directly to servers under the control of the world's most shameless and worst oppressors and suppressors of the internet & freedom of expression (among other more serious rights & freedoms) cannot be washed away by the company appointing a former, well known Google executive as its international face. And they have just discovered that the other countries of the world are not like their home country when it comes to shamelessly tolerating and even blatantly encouraging intellectual property theft from its rightful owners.

Even if India isn't as free a country (or even market) as many of us citizens would like, the Hon'ble High Court has actually just said, Welcome to a free market and its level playing field, Xiaomi!

One particular media/newspaper group (with its HQ in Chennai) has already gone ballistic after this verdict and begun the PR work on behalf of their most beloved smartphone brand!

I expect hard retaliation, and expect it quite soon. Some Indian multinational company which has a big presence in the P_R_C-ommieland may soon face some kind of retaliatory music by the real owners of Xiaomi, and I can't help but feel sorry for them in advance.

P.S.: I mean no offence at all to owners/users/fans of Xiaomi smartphones!

Wish the respectable court acted on time for the 'right' reasons instead of acting on a complain where a corporate will be benefited from the order.

Anyways, the order doesn't seem of permanent type, Xiaomi will soon be found selling their devices here.
