Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

My MacBook pro 13" mid 2014 battery capacity has reduced swiftly from ~4000mah(checked about a month back) to <500mah. The cycle count stands at 525. What could be the issue? or is this expected from a 5 year old MacBook.

I asked around and found that the replacement would cost around 16k? Is this a fair amount? This is from a local shop that specialises in apple products. Yet to receive a quote from apple service centre. Not sure if my laptop is still supported.

Does it make sense to replace the battery on a laptop of this age? Only the isight camera is non functional, rest everything is working fine.

Any other reliable sources for after market batteries? Not sure if ifixit carries out international shipping of batteries.

I too am on Catalina. The missing step is, once you Right-click the image, navigate all the way down to "Services", and the first option there is to set this as the desktop picture.

Cheers
Worked like a dream. Thanks bro.

Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

This may not be relevant here, but the Apple Store in Dubai replaced my battery for under AED 500 (Rs. 10,000). Cycle count was 825, and was good enough till 1000 cycles. But I insisted and they replaced. It doesn't drop suddenly like in your case, and might need some looking into. The MacBook doesn't age and a new battery would be a good investment (provided there are no faults in the machine itself). Mine got a new lease of life with 1TB SSD and works great.

Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

So I have a MacBook Air (mid-2011) that I was using regularly till 2018. Post that it was being used very rarely. As it was still running on OS Lion I thought of updating it to High Sierra (the latest version supported for this model).
I downloaded the dmg file from Apple website (4.5 GB) and started the process after taking the backup.
However, between the process I got this message - ‘ File System Verify or Repair failed’. I tried restarting but it didn’t change anything.
After that with the help of google , I tried to repair the SSD using Disk Utility but it couldn’t. I then tried to erase the disc still no luck. I then tried to unmount the disc via Terminal but still couldn’t do it.
So I think that the SSD is gone. Is anyone aware of a decent Mac repair shop in Pune? I plan to get it checked once by a professional and then eventually get a new SSD if required. Also any contacts from where I can get SSDs would be great.
Thanks
Rahul

So, before you go buying a new SSD, have you tried doing a clean install (what is sometimes referred to as a nuke & pave) instead of upgrading the existing system?

If not, I would recommend you try that once. You have nothing to lose - your data is backed up, and if you bought a new SSD you would anyway be doing a clean install, so may as well try it here now.

There's tons of help online - YouTube and Apple's own website - on how to do a clean install.

Cheers and good luck.

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro 13 retina and the battery backup dropped to 5-10% after 1000 cycles (5 years). I dont use the machine anymore as its not as fast for my programming (got a Macbook 16 2019)
But rather than getting a battery from apple, look for a replacement on amazon. I found one at half the cost for my machine. I battery has been working fine, the replacement process was fairly easy except for removing that glue underneath.

I just got a a new Magsafe port on my 2015 MacBook Pro as it was not making proper contact with the charger - it had gone black on a couple of pins. I got it done from a chap who used to do door step service before the pandemic, but upon further enquiry, it turned out he was just 10 km away from my home. So paid him a 50% advance to source the parts and he sourced in less than a week. Yesterday went to him and got it fixed in 4-5 hrs.

He's located at Mumbra, and reasonable. I wanted to get my battery changed as well, (1034 cycle count, 4801 mAh - full charge when new 5,698 mAh) but he said wait for some time as rates have shot through the roof. He used to charge 7-8k for OEM batteries but now its 10-12k. I can post his contact details if you are interested.

As I mentioned in my previous comment, I am unable to erase the Macintosh HD disk from Disk utility. I would think that it would be the first step when doing a clean install.

I can't help with DIY, but had similar issues on my MacBook. I sent to local Authorised service centre, and they installed a new OS. They kept the machine for a day but did not charged me anything for unknown reasons It was an out of warranty machine. This was many Years ago, maybe they were not that busy. But, if you cannot do yourself, can try taking help before changing any hardware.

Wow! Let me then try my luck with the Authorized Center. Normally I would expect them to charge a good sum even for installing a new OS. However, this being a very old Mac that needs to be updated with an old OS, I should try my luck.

You cannot erase the partition/ disk which contains the OS. My advice is to create a bootable USB flash drive of the 4.5 GB OSX that you’ve downloaded. There are many utilities for creating a bootable disk. Alternatively, if you’ve a good internet connection then you can get this on the fly. What you need to do is restart the system and press and hold Command +R while it boots. It will take you to booting options where you should select install new OS. Here before installing, you should select disc utility which will be available under the menu along with a very few selected items. Here you should be able to ‘format’ your drive. Once done, restart installation either from your bootable flash drive if you prepared or over the WiFi.

You can check this thread. https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/gadge...cbook-air.html (DIY: Upgrading the Storage / SSD of a Macbook Air!)

Skip to OS install section. Also you can see options for changing the SSD if required as the last option.

Regards.

Boot from an external device such as a USB key or an external drive that has the OS installed in it. Then your inbuilt drive becomes available to erase and install.

If you look online, you will find detailed instructions on hopw to do the whole install (nuke and pave) including setting up a bootable USB key etc.

Cheers

Brilliant idea Tilt, I had recently wiped clean Mac Book Air when I had to dispose off the same. Unlike Windows, you don't necessarily need to have a .DMG file installed in the bootable flash drive to wipe clean MacOS and install a fresh copy (Although it helps save time if you have a .DMG file available already) but you can also download and install from the web on the fly.

I referred to this video, maybe it can help you out too. Jump to 2:40 for the step by step procedure

Cheers!

Re: iBhp - Think Different (Team-BHPians on a Mac)

Hi Guys. I have a weird problem with my MacBook Pro - 2017

The wifi seems to be acting up. If I connect my phone through wifi there is no internet. But if I connect it through USB it’s working. Same case with Jio wifi dongle. Also it takes a lot of time connecting with wifi.

Once connected, up and running with one network, the experience is seamless though.

Any suggestions please.
