Hey, you can connect any computer speaker system to the TV.

How many zeros in the budget?

This is what I have.

Try sourcing the Altec Lansing MX5021 which is good for music, but the sub is slightly weak.
I'd get the red hot favourite Logitech Z5500. 18-19k and you will have a SOLID home theatre system. Trust me on that.

Best part of this is that it accepts digital inputs, so you can connect your TV SPDIF output to this and enjoy cutting edge 5.1 surround!

Onkyo vs Yamaha?

Guys,

I'm looking for a premium HTIB option. I've used basic/budget Pioneer HTIB in the past but sold it off as it had many limitations.

I saw Onkyo S3300 and Yamaha YH-294.

Yamaha has active sub woofer while (I believe) Onkyo has a passive one (can someone confirm this?)

Both are around 25k and there's hardly any difference in features. There was an offer of a free DVD player along with Yamaha.

Can you recommend which one is better?

My usage is:
1. Movies and music through HDMI cable connected to LCD
2. iPod playability
3. Tata sky

As far as I understood, I can connect my Western Digital Media Player via 1 HDMI input, DVD through another HDMI input and Tata Sky through composite (YRW) cable.

re: The Home Theater thread

These systems are similar in terms of:

1. Amplifier
2. Sound quality of HDMI receiver

Both are 50 Watt per channel systems (though they claim to be ~100 Watt). You cant go wrong with either. Personally I liked Yamaha's output. Compared these systems for a friend couple of weeks back.

Regarding movies, what is the source of movies? Do you rent DVDs? To enjoy these, you must have proper source.

Reason is, unless source itself has proper 5.1 sound at decent bitrate; these systems will sound awful.

EDIT:

Yes, YH-294 does have better subwoofer.

I would suggest you go with this system and upgrade speakers 1 or 2 years later.

Thanks for the revert NetfreakBombay! Source of movies is Mkv/DivX/Avi rips. Very soon I shall be moving to BR/HD rips as I plan to upgrade my broadband connection and be able to download HD movies.

Any good place in Mumbai to get a proper audition, especially using my movies/music? I dont like Croma/Vijay sales etc for auditioning.

re: The Home Theater thread

I've known that Mordaunt Short is a well known hi-fi equipment manufacturer but was surprised to see this ad for the Carnival 6 floor-standers for an awesome price of around 13k! And no, for a pair!

Mordant Short - Carnival 6 Tower

In no way am I affiliated to this site in any way and just thought I'd pass on the info. I read some reviews of these speakers and understood that the deal is just awesome. Planning to pick a pair soon.

re: The Home Theater thread

Guys i need some help. I am a complete newbie at this thing. I am attaching some pics of the speaker system i got as a gift from my dad's friend who is a acoustic designer based in HK. Please don't go on the looks of the system, i know it looks dated but it sounds pretty well. (at least enough for me). I got this system in 2008 and have not used it much ever since. I used to have a old Chinese dvd player which had a 5.1 output which would connect into the 5.1 input on this system. But that DVD player broke and now i have plugged in the system from my LCD's Audio out into the systems 2.1 Audio Input using the white and red connector cable.

What i want to understand here is how can i utilize the 5.1 of this system? can i get a cable which can connect from the TV output to the systems 5.1 input.

Please excuse me on this as i have completely no idea on these things but really keen on making the most of it. The MAJOR draw back of this system is it has no HDMI input / output.

Please help / guide me to make the most of this unit. Do i need to purchase an AV receiver separately? This system comprises of 2 AA battery operated wireless speakers. I have no idea on its specifications and other details.

re: The Home Theater thread

Hello All,

Seems my query above is a bit confusing for all.

Anyways, now i have one more doubt.

If i want to invest in a basic HT system which can take input from TATA SKY, PS3, DVD player and connect to my LCD using HDMI, Which system would you all recommend?

What sort of price range am i looking at?

Please advice.
