re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Thank you OHC Vtec, Akhil and Sb Kumar for your responses. I was wrong on the LG optimus OS being dated. I saw the motorola defy specs. Seems loaded. How important is it to have the latest OS? Can it be updated later? I forgot to mention one usage, email. It is a very imp usage for me.

The froyo update is already out in American market. Should happen anytime in India. Loving the Defy, coolest phone I have owned.

I have read the reviews for Galaxy Ace - not recommended. LG Optimus - small screen size, dated os. If you could please guide me to a good value for money phone.

Thanks!

Why do you say Galaxy Ace is not recommended?

Another option is HTC wildfire and MicroMax(around Rs.7-8k i think)

The only problem with Defy is that it cannot be rooted!

Or maybe it means that 'not as easily rootable as other phones'? Like, via One Click Root or Unrevoked etc?

Or maybe bootloader is not yet cracked i.e. manufacturer does not support rooting?

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

After migrating my Samsung G3 to 2.2 its become very slow, it takes few seconds to show something on the screen especially the call logs and contacts which is really irritating My machine is showing 94MB RAM is free, checking on how to free up more RAM. Any tweaks?

Not really buddy! Count me in. Am in the verge of buying it. My mind says SGSL but my heart says SGS. Really can't get over this dilemma. Well... based on your usage can you really tell me if the following points make a difference.

Points in favor of Galaxy S - SGS
  • Super AMOLED screen - World's best display in mobiles do far
  • TV Out - functionality
  • Larger internal storage - 16Gigs ( SL has got only 4GB)
  • Better processor and GPU
  • Gingerbread update on the cards
  • Easy availability of accessories and stuff alike. Take note that the dimensions of S and SL are not the same. You may find it hard to source accessories for it

Points in favor of Galaxy SL - SGSL
  • Bigger battery
  • Cheaper than its predecessor by atleast 4 ~ 5k
  • Some reviews suggest that Super LCD display is far better than the super AMOLED one.

Galaxy S retails around INR 23,900 and Galaxy SL at about INR 18,900. Remember reading somewhere that Galaxy S prices are likely to come down drastically once the S II launched.

Would be great if some one can help me get over this dilemma. Thanks!

re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

I just ordered a HTC Desire S from FlipKart for my mother. Can Lotus Notes be configured on Android? Is it fairly straightforward to configure (I know that MSXchange is) in the native email client? Thanks.

Also, does anyone know where I can get a hard case & screen guard for the Desire S. None of the retail stores seem to have it and neither can I find any on FlipKart \ ebay.in. .

This is interesting. You want a plastic screen guard over a Gorilla glass display.

That is like wearing leather armor over Kevlar suit.

Hi - Yes I have configured Touch down on my Galaxy S to access my corporate mail server and it works like a charm. All the settings are detected automatically by the app. The downside is that it is a free app only for a month post which you have to either buy the license or do a re install. Hope this helps

Looking at the way I am struggling to get an software update from v10c to v10e - updating from Froyo to Gingerbread almost looks impossible !

btw - any precautions to be taken before I root the phone ? Take a back up so that I can roll back if something goes wrong ? Been reading up but the language is too technical - anyone here could spell it out more easy ? I would be thankful !

@NC
This as well as the below par loudspeaker quality are the only drawbacks of Optimus One.

If you have time, I would suggest you to get it done from LG service center. Else, Maybe Android gurus can help

I was told in alteast 3 shops that Galaxy Ace has been stopped and instead Galaxy Pop and Galaxy Fit has been introduced. Can anybody confirm this?
