How reliable is such rooting and usage.
Such phones cost 100$ locked in US, and after paying a 200$ early termination fee you can have the top end phone for 300-350$ total(as opposed to 30K price of GSM variant in India).

Anybody here done this?
Rooting and unlocking are two different things. You may need to gain root access to unlock but if there is specific need like applying your own patches there is no need to keep the phone rooted.

TSK As you know android uses Linux kernel with some modifications. For security when the phone boots up the default user is not a root. So rooting means gaining the root access and then removing modifying the permissions / files to remove the lock.

After rooting you will be able to do a lot of operations on the phone which were not possible earlier. I would say in interest of security once you have modified the required resources you should revert from root mode.

Running as root is not a problem in itself but you are opening up the gates.

PS : If you want to buy cheaper phones from US instead of CDMA look at GSM/ UMTS 3G phones from AT&T they will work on all the 3G networks here and you will not be on mercy of reliance. Be careful to check the supported band if you are taking T-Mobile phone as T-Mobile is 1900Mhz so you need to pick a dual / multi band 3G phone

I guess I will change providers once number portability comes into force pan India. NCR is still not in number portability radar.
Then I can get a nice GSM phone from India itself.

20th Jan is the day AFAIK so not too far :-) with in 2-3 months it should be available pan India for just 19 Rs and 6 months lock in with new operator.

So If you have option to get a Cheap 3G Android from US get it CDMA is at dead end Tata-Tele got 26% from DoCoMo and launched 3G , Reliance is also moving away from CDMA , 7$ per line and 2$ per handset to qualcomm is a huge royalty for them.

Re: Do It All Phone

You could Go for Samsung Galaxy S. I bought this since the new office I had moved to a new office and they had lot of restrictions in accessing internet, content filtering etc.

Its good value for money, fast (1Ghz processor), 16GB storage, lot of features and apps that can be downloaded. Only issue is the that battery drains fast if you are constantly using GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G, etc but battery draining is common with most Android Phones.

3. Access to emails.
4. Access to Facebook and Twitter.
5. Chat all day long with frineds.
6. Watch movies on the go, if needs be.

P.S......The most imprtant thing from the above is stock and MF trading through the phone.

Basically I want a device that is as good as a laptop, has the MS office and other software, but is also a phone at the same time.

Re: Android Phones - Internet Plans?

Which plan do you use for accessing internet from these android phones? Is there any unlimited plans available? If so, how much does it cost? AFAIK only BSNL provides unlimited plans on their 3G network.

Pan India mobile number portability rollout is scheduled on 20th Jan 2011.
This means that you can retain your number by paying a small fee for the number and change your operator. This service is already being piloted in Hariyana.

Mobile Number Portability Launched in Haryana, Pan India by January 20

Rest of the para is specific to TSK who wanted to buy a cheap CDMA handset becuase he is locked on Reliance.
