I went to a Mahindra showroom on Tuesday and took a test drive of S10 variant. There are some bits I didn't like for example the bouncy ride is still there and the door handles feels very plastic, something which is best suited for cars from few segments lower.

Regarding the availability I don't think there is any such thing like S4 variant is made after booking as it was readily available there. Can't confirm about the 4wd variant though.

Can someone please confirm the dimensions of this car. The website has it at 5118mm (ref. that to the Storme being 4655mm). Will adversely affect my decision making since the primary reason for me to tilt marginally towards the Scorpio was "perceived" compactness for city driving.

And if anyone has some picture references of the S4 model and can share them. We have had far too many people showing the S10.

He might be referring to the S4 with the 4wd hardware. I believe even in its last iteration, this particular spec was difficult to procure.

Yes - some models are made-to-order in some configurations.

Just walk into a mahindra showroom and ask for S10-Black-Captain seats-4WD. This would take a waiting period of 1- 1.5 months easily. Based on sales numbers, they produce the version and color that easily moves in the market. Rest, they schedule something like "once a month" or "once a fortnight" to cater to the enthisiast category.

- To the uninformed sector, 4WD is just an accessory or added feature. Many of them dont even know why or how to use 4WD. When kumbakonam - chennai route had that anaicut bridge weak problem, I have seen a 4WD endeavour use a tractor to help cross, but a 2WD bolero crossed the river sand bad without any issues

Have been a scorpio loyalist since the first one came into the market. Dad had the original model and I used to drive it around on my visits home. I liked the high driving position and driving without worrying about the condition of the road. the availability of spares was good and not much went wrong it. As we live in a rural area the condition of the roads is terrible. Dad used to drive it in the fields without any worries.
In 2009 Sept upgraded to Scorpio Mhawk VLX. Loved the new look and the changes in the suspension were good.its has clocked up 142,000 kms without any major problems. I started using it since Nov 2014 when I moved back. Drove to Leh via Manali and came back via Srinagar. Jaisalmer Twice. Pokhara and Kathmandu. and the countless trips to Delhi and Punjab .
So it was only natural that when the new gen scorpio came I was going to upgrade to it.

I had already told the nearest ( 100km away) Mahindra Dealer in Lakhimpur back in July that I want one so when the release was announced the dealer called me up to send him the deposit and told me it will be ready for collection on the 27th Sept.

The Dealer in Lakhimpur has been excellent and all the paperwork was ready when I arrived to collect the car. I was out in 30mins.

the model I got is Scorpio S10 2.2 MHawk 2WD MT 7S

I feel it is value for money and happy about the equipment in the S10 variant and can't honestly ask for more at this price.Till today
I have done 1,600 kms and feel the differene between the previous one. The 17 inch wheels have made a difference in the ride
quality , as all the roads where I live are rough. the gearbox is difinately smoother and the move to an electric radiator fan has quitened
things down in the engine compartment as well as the soundproofing in the engine bay.
The climate control is excellent and maintains the temp ( checked with a thermometer) ,the switchgear is a lot better and the height
adjustable driver seat is a boon. the puddle lights are now in the doors whereas in the previous model they were in the side steps and
always caked in mud and stopped working.
the audio system is ok and the bluetooth connects well. one thing I have noticed is that when you answer the phone the screen does not
go back to what was on there when you end the call. the screen should have been placed higher and also at times its hard to see with the glare.
the handling is a lot better and the wallowing issue seems be the resloved but will confirm later.
overall I am happy with the vehicle as of now and hope it continues that way

- Engine
tried and tested Mhawk 2.2 is a pleasure . no matter what kind of situation the response is always there.

- Gearshift / transmission quality, smoothness, response time etc.
The gearbox is a lot better. The throw of the previous one was like a truck whereas this one is more car like.
the change are smooth also

- Fuel efficiency : City and Highway
I have driven it 1600 km's yet and the average has been about 15.5 kmpl combined.there is hardly any traffic where I am so
can't comment on the city kmpl

- Suspension & ride quality
It is a step up again from the last version and the increase in the rim size seems to have helped.

- Comments on the steering, braking, high speed stability etc.
the steering wheel is from the xuv . it feels nice to hold . the abs feels better then the last one and high speed stability seems better .

- Review on overall practicality (luggage room, ease of ingress/egress, cubby holes etc.)
there is enough space at the back to have two truck tyres ( the trolley need two tyres urgently so they were carried home in the scorpio)
the previous model had more cubby holes and there lack is missed

- Any niggles, problems
there is a rattle coming from the rear door which will be looked into at the first service

- Quality of after-sales service
I was happy with the service provided most of the time with the previous model though at time
there were problems but overall it was good. I hope that will continue

-Cost of Upkeep and maintenance
I expect it to be similar to the previous one

1. The Front extension gets a the electric fan assy + grill and cladding including HL cluster
2. 17"wheels and tyres add up to the weight
3. A vibration damping weight (reduces torsional vibrations and keeps the shaft spinning bw the gap of clutch and declutch + also makes the shifts smoother- momentum- this is my observation) is added in the pinion end of the drive shaft
4. Rear and front anti roll bars are different and could have contributed to some weight gain
5. A new front suspension member is mounted on the chassis to which the spring on damper (struts) are fastened.
6. PU bushes are also heavier than conventional rubber bushes
7. Increase in the dimensions of the hood
8. Struts to raise the hood
9. Cladding on the tail gate could have added up
10. Steering assy including column could be heavier with the new assy from XUV (collapsible with sleeve)
11. Additional weight from all the firewall cladding and sound damping
12. The mid section of the chassis is a section in sleeve and can be extended. The overlap will add some weight
13. The stone guard (metal plate) in front of the diesel tank will also add to weight
14. Rear axle also looks different.The differential inspection flange on the rear adding some weight
15. Perhaps the Xylo gearbox is same weight or heavier.The new gearbox may be shorter/longer (not sure) and driven by a heavier drive shaft (since the gearbox bell may be longer or shorter than the older one).

Reduction-

1. A dead weight that was hanging from the rear axle is removed
2. The lower arm is a different design and also looks well built (unlike the duster's) should be lighter than the older H frame design (4 point- 2-Chassis and 2 Kingpin)
3. The upper arm also looked like a simple and lighter design (4 point)
4. PS assy is also lighter and may have been borrowed from XUV
5. The plastic diesel tank will shred some

Potential issues:
With the increased chassis track , upsize tyres could foul the wheel well at the rear
Reduced suspension travel in the front will send heavy shocks directly into the chassis member also also increase damper failure in the front

Just a query, what do you mean by "upsize tyres could foul the wheel well at the rear" looking at the wheel well of my current Scorpio there seems to be enough space to accommodate a 20" so 1" (for the 17") more should not have any issues.

To a car owner, knowing he biggest wheel size that can fit into a vehicle is very important. There is a simple rule, which is the upgraded wheel's diameter should not be larger than 3% of the original. For example, if we take the 235/65R17 specification as an example (OE), with the original diameter size as follows:
Wheel diameter: 17 inches, 17 inch × 2.54 cm = 43.18 cm
Sidewall: 65% of the tyre's surface, 23.50 cm × 0.65 = 15.275cm
But as each wheel has two sidewalls, the sidewalls have to be multiplied by 2,
Sidewall: 15.275 cm × 2 = 30.55cm
Diameter: 43.18 cm + 30.55 cm = 73.73 cm

Is it possible to upsize the tyre and if yes what size?

Two considerations-
1. Fouling of inner walls on body
2. Error in Odometer reading
Fortunately the upsizes on the new Scorpio are all under well under width for the gap available. But speed will surely have an error.

These are very relevant observations and inputs, however I personally don't believe in changing the OEM specs including the tyres as they negate many of the testings and certifications done for the vehicle to classify them roadworthy.

For me it would be interesting to find out the improvement in ride quality, and now how it would stand up to the others in it's comparison set, namely the Safari and Duster (which is the benchmark).
