Re: New Toyota Fortuner caught on test in Thailand

What an amazing beast it looks like. While the first gen Butch look is gone, this one looks eager to prowl with its Eagle Eyes trained on road. Quite an efforts seem to have gone in to rebuild into a new animal.

Is this going to sell like hot cake, anybody's guess This is getting better.

A few things still bug though
- Why O Why Toyota the same old Stepney mechanism? I still see the slot there, can't be anything else IMO. Innovaians and Fortunerers surely will know the pain it is sometimes.

- Third row seats still have to go up in air to hang up. Can't see properly if there is any improvement in mechanism. But sometimes its pain. Would have been really good if they could have been flattened below somehow.

- Why the Shark Fin antenna when it used to be inconspicuous glass printed one earlier?

- Those droopy chrome eyeliners do look nice afterall with the Sharp Eagle Eyes, atleast digestible. But the Fogs are looking too cheesy, hope they make the Fog ornamentation an accessory than a standard fitment for India.

- And where is the Hood Scoop, the trademark? Earlier even Thai versions used to have scoop for Diesel but plain bonnet for the Petrol. Hope they do bring it on for Indian version. Maybe they did eliminate completely the need for the scoop at all.

- Thai does not seem to have 4X4 MT but AT only. Hope and more positive that it will not be the case for India. But if it is, it is going to be pretty disappointing.

Well, that is going to be a big change, center differential is quite an expensive part. So if they really take that away, they should price the new fortuner at the same price as it is now if not less.

If that is really the case I'm happy with my current one, I was thinking about upgrading to the new one when it comes here. But if there is no full time 4X4 there is no way I'm going to buy it.
So Full time 4X4 with manual lever is going to be antique in few years.

Re: New Toyota Fortuner caught on test in Thailand

I was just browsing the ACI website for the Fortuner pics and I was shocked to find the interiors to be same as the Corolla.
In another pic, it shows the interiors to be LC inspired. Is there a chance that the lower specs will get a different dashboard layout? I just hope it is a mistake by ACI.

The pics for reference:

Re: New Toyota Fortuner caught on test in Thailand

As others have said, I am warming up at the looks [in white] but will prefer the current gen or better, the 1st gen Fortuner anyday over this.

The interiors have really gone a sea change, utilitarian to plush. Would be interesting to watch its price unveil here.

In comparison, is the Pajero Sport any lesser to drive around?

What do you mean? Pajero sport has full time 4WD. I hope at least that remains as it is.

No, it does not. Neither the Safari/Storme or the Scorpio. They have the 2H mode.

Re: New Toyota Fortuner caught on test in Thailand

I doubt this vehicle will come to India anytime soon. Does anyone have any info?

If not, then this thread is more of an international scene story.

Yes it will come eventually, but not anytime soon.

Just like the Fortuner, Pajero Sport also has a full time 4wd mode because of the center differential. The center diff can also be locked and it does have low range gearing reduction. Unlike the Fortuner, Pajero Sport can be used in 2wd mode also, Fortuner does not come with 2wd only mode.

Scorpio and Safari do not have a center differential, so the 4wd cannot be used on paved well paved surfaces which do not allow slip.

Sorry this has been discussed numerous times, Pajero sport has Full time 4WD.
it has super select 4WD which gives you option to switch to 2WD as well. Apart from this we have H4 and L4. So the options are 2H, 4H, 4Hlc and 4Llc.

Please check other threads and Pajero website above.

Apologies. I was under the impression that it doesn't have a center differential and that, it had just the 3 modes.

And thanks, I stand corrected

EDIT:
I got confused because, normally from what I have seen/observed, SUV's having the 2H mode do not have a center differential.

Because it was mentioned in the accessories brochure. Please refer to the picture.

Both Pajero and Forutner can be driven permanently with 4H if you want since it has an open center differential.
Bingo!! hope they retain the open centre differential.

Option of having 2WD is good when you want to save on fuel for city commutes.
(But then any car on all time 4WD is safer than a 2WD, especially on a highway.)

Please correct me if I am wrong, you are the expert on 4×4's.

My understanding of the new fortuner is
2H (2WD high range)(tarmac)
4H (4WD high range)-lockable differential when needed.(tarmac - unlocked. Off road-locked)
4L (4WD low range)-(only off road)Is the differential locked by default?

In fact Fortuner used to have a 2wd only mode for road usage(& no full time 4wd) before it came to India, however after the infamous South African roll over incidents full time 4wd was added later.

In times of ESP, for normal road surfaces, full time 4wd might not make much of an difference, but on gravel and snow surfaces it's a life saver.
