re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

My brother checked out the Nexon today which is on display at Akhil Mandai Ganapati Mandal, Pune.
He liked the car from the inside. Seats are really nice as per him. To check out rear space he made the three Tata guys (of three different shapes and size) accompanying the car to sit in it for the click.

As per him, the rear bench is as squeeze or as comfortable for three as the Baleno (his reference.) But for two at the back it is way better with the handrest down. Three sitting at the back, middle person gets adequate under-thigh support from the edges of two bucket seats. Headroom is enough for his height 5'11".

Legroom is again more than adequate.

Overall, he isn't impressed with the exterior look of the car. He said it looks Indica-ish. He is not really a car enthusiast and had not seen or heard about Nexon before I asked him to check it out today. He has no idea that I've already booked it for myself. But I hope design would grow over him as it did with me.

Tata representatives present there had no idea about the date of launch except the often repeated 'september end'. Also, no clue when would the test drives begin.

Without the dual tone, it looks just like a hatchback. I don't like this paint scheme while I love the dual tone. I don't remember any car that evoked such starkly different emotions just by the difference in paint scheme. Hopefully it looks better in person.

I think Tata have made good decision by keeping the ceramic lines in lowest variant as well. It keeps the character of the car intact across the trims.

re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

Lots of discussion for a Tata car before launch. Already 134 pages

This is surely a nice car by Tata. It checks all the boxes as a small SUV (Big Hatch like Eco-sport / Brezza). I would have liked it more if Tata has given some better face for this car. Something similar to Hexa or Storme would have looked much better. This smiley face is good but not great. Better face would have made this car look smashing.

re: The Tata Nexon, now launched at Rs. 5.85 lakhs

The base Brezza doesn't come with wheel covers, a friend who was considering the Base variant was put off by this fact alone that MS wasn't offering a wheel covers for a car which costed 8 lakh plus on road. Whereas here just like the zest, tata has done well to make the Base variant look decent and not a very cheap compromise. To imagine the car which looks like this comes with ABS, Dual airbags, iso fix, drive modes, indicators on orvm even the base variant looks an enticing proposition for people on a strict budget. Having seen the car in person I can say that it is a very tempting proposition indeed. I just hope it comes in black.

I read detailed review of Nexon in Autocar india anniversary issue. Nexon is a heavy car. Petrol variant weighs 1237 Kg and Diesel is 1305 kgs ( 30 kgs heavier than S-Cross 1.6)

Acceleration figures : 0-100

Petrol
Eco : 21.94
City : 13.90
Sport : 12.33

Diesel
Eco : 19.47
City : 16.15
Sport : 13.68

Top Speed

Petrol : 153 kmph
Diesel : 183 kmph

Thanks for sharing the figures.
These figures are enough to prove that the Three Drive Mode are not a marketting gimmick!
Well done Tata Motors!

It's not a gimmick at all. Only in few cars different modes have difference only in throttle response. But in this case there is significant difference in 0-100 timing which proves that fuelling is changed in different modes

Yes. Even the AC effect reduces in eco mode. Hence in peak summer or if you have parked your car under sun and then starting off, better to run in city or sports mode for a reasonable time before switching to eco mode. This is based on my experience with the Bolt. Should be similar here.

I am somehow not convinced with these numbers, particularly compared to Vitara Brezza. Nexon has larger displacement, more power, more torque, better power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratio, extra gear in transmission and is yet significantly slower than Vitara Brezza? Shouldn't it be faster, or at least reach 100 kph in same time?

Brezza is around 12.9 seconds I guess as per Autocar. Nexon diesel is more than 100 kgs heavier. Also what you forgot to mention is gear ratios. Nexon should be having taller gear ratios.

Edit : Checked the numbers!!

Nexon
0-100 : 13.68
0-120 : 19.04
0-140 : 28.17

Vitara Brezza
0-100 : 12.96
0-120 : 19.85
0-140 : 29.34

Brezza is slower than Nexon after 100 kmph. Also we can't completely rely on these numbers for comparison because the testing would have been done in different conditions. Autocar has used their old data for Brezza.

I saw some websites quoting 12.3-12.5 seconds for Brezza. Even if it is 12.9, I would still expect Nexon to be faster. Yes, it is heavy but has Nexon vs Brezza power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratio is 84 vs76 hp/ton and 199 vs 171 Nm/ton. I don't think Nexon being heavier should matter since the power and torque is considerably more.

With 6-gear transmission, I would expect first 5 gears of Nexon to be shorter than those of Brezza. This should further contribute to better acceleration.

If the claimed top speed of 183 kmph for the diesel is true, then gearing would be fairly tall through all gears.
