It is not as if Mahindra decided one fine day, to make a Wrangler replica. They had the license to jeep models, even before FCA or Chrysler or Kaiser owned the Jeep name. The legality or licensing has already been discussed here, not going down there.
So Mahindra do have the legacy for jeeps. Afterall, they have made it for 70+ years. And to be frank, there is only much you can modernise a jeep design without looking like a Wrangler.
Oh, come on. The the license from Willy's was for the CJ and similar models only and not a free pass to ride piggyback on the Jeep Chrysler R&D team's hardwork even after 70 years.

Sure, many manufacturers acquired to produce the "Jeep" but it isn't true that all of them ended making wranglers 70 years later. Other than Mahindra, Mitsubishi and AMC were major licensees of the Willy's jeep. AMC went bankrupt in the 80's but Mitsubishi is still a renewed name among the SUV manufacturers.

Below is a 3 door Mitsubishi Shogun. Can anybody confuse it with a jeep wrangler or a renegade? I seriously doubt it.

Companies like Ford and Toyota have also successfully produced their versions of a Jeep without infringing on each other's design. The Ford GPW was so similar to the Willy's but the latest Bronco is galaxies different from the wrangler.

I am sorry to say but it is indeed the case of Mahindra getting up one fine day and deciding to make a wrangler replica. They even copied small things like the antenna placement near the front fender, dual bonnet latches, square brake lights, a/c vent design, rear view mirrors etc.

It is simply a cheap hand played by Mahindra, a kind of a 'desi-jugaad", something which Mahindra was initially known for.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

It was very exciting to watch the new THAR 2020. After reading the reviews and seeing the promotional videos, it was felt that if there is a 5 door variant, it would be the best combination. The ingress and egress for the rear seat passengers felt a little troublesome. Also the boot space seems to be small for family vacations.
Would like to hear more from the eminent team members for further details.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

I'm a bit disappointed in the looks to be honest. I liked the retro look of the old Thar.

What I was hoping for:
Mostly keep the older looks but bring out the common changes what customers do after purchasing the thar. Add those changes in the car and we customers won't need to modify the Thar. That and a more powerful engine, better interiors would have been enough.

This looks more like an SUV. It still looks good but it looks worse than the current Thar. The front grill looks terrible. And they've copied the wrangler design.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Some questions
Width?
Front and rear track?
Turning circle?

4X4 engagement/ disengagement procedure?
Engine braking in Low Ratio in the AT? Or any form of descent control?
MLD - autolocker or under driver control?

Fuel tank capacity? Or rather range?

Lots of other questions, but guess those will be answered in time. Most important is ofcourse price.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Though it’s a excellent endeavor by Mahindra , I still have doubts whether it can win over the ‘fence sitters’ as mentioned in the reveal. The reasons are:-
1. Did not see anything to fit luggage carrier
2. Straight line stability at high speed in highways is a concern
3. No remote opening of fuel lid
4. Not sure about steering response and vibration
5. Ride quality may not be good enough for many non Thar user to adopt it for long high way drives
Will wait for detailed Team BHP review and media drive (not sure when it is coming) to make final judgement. Definitely this is excellent for daily city grind and off-roading - but not sure about highway.
Another point I did not like is skid plates seems to be made of plastic - not sure why Mahindra did that.

I also don't quite understand the logic behind it.

I build a house and i want to sell it. I show it to prospective customers. One of them likes it and is interested in buying it and asks me for the price. I say i will not tell you now, i'll tell you in 2 months. If i was the customer my first thoughts would be the seller is not interested in selling it.

It all appears like a PR stunt from choosing the dates of vehicle launch and price reveal to publicly announcing all the vloggers who are going to review the car to short videos of all key people involved in the design and development emphasizing that it's their flagship; it's not a vehicle, it's a beast - don't know what that means. All the vloggers rushing to shoot, edit and publish their videos after 9pm and not before (as instructed by Mahindra) also appears like a well thought out socialmedia action plan.

Making your employees work on a public holiday also didn't appear quite right.

The video at 28:55 is a first for any car launch that i have seen.

Mahindra is getting lot of flak for copying Jeep Wrangler except for the horrible grill.
FCA in US has forced Mahindra to stop sales of Roxor through a trade design infringement clause. The Roxor site also says "We will be back". Link
Is this Mahindra's way of payback by clawing away Compass and Wrangler sales in India?

The site is functional but there is no picture of Roxor and also they are not accepting any orders.
It says "The ROXOR configurator is not available until the ROXOR 2021 is in production." on the link.

Finally front and rear track widths are same!

I really liked the all new Thar from the pictures and videos. I think it will be a fantastic vehicle and get a lot of buyers if priced below 17 or 18 lacs. The fit and finish looks top notch. Can't wait to see one in flesh. I hope Mahindra comes out with a white one. The black top and white combo will look killer.
