This looks so good.
If it is in the less then 15L kind of budget , I will be sad to see my Baleno leave me.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

This Thar certainly looks promising and if they manage to roll out quality product from day 1, they will have a winner. The unvieling was good, but I was expecting some more details about the underpinnings, how robust the gen 3 platform is and the technology going behind it.

I still remember the original unvieling done by Behram sir. He was so passionate about the product and was asking the slide presenter to move between slides to explain the goodness of the vehicle. Missed that stuff in this unvieling.

Overall a nice product, however the launch is a bit delayed as we will have more options available in October. I am surea there will be some competition for this beauty from the day of its launch.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

So the reveal was quite a wait.

What I loved

1. The new powertrains especially gasoline with automatic. Gasoline doesn’t freeze.
2. Interiors the washable things and weatherproof speaker switches. (Lets hope how much it holds true) Or Kaput in no time.
3. Rear Seat with 50:50 split.
4. Making sure all variants have 4wd.
5 and the 255 65 R18s

What I didnt like
1. The redesign. Loss of the iconic shape. Especially front face. It looked downright ugly.
2. Loss of short wheel base.
3. The rip off designs of tail lamps from the wrangler. (They could have done theirs)

What I wish.

That some parts like the ORVMS can be retrofitted in our old thar.

And I wish it is priced way high so its sour grapes for lot of us.

What I would buy if i upgrade.
The Auto Gasoline Hardtop.

Happy Independence Day to all.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Finally, after more than a year's wait, the THAR has landed. The overall proportion looks neat. A few observations on seeing the pics:

1. The front fascia. I think they have tried to make use of the erstwhile Armada. IMHO it rather than the small 7 slat grille they could have used the same old grille. It would have looked good on the vehicle. I think this will get addressed for future iterations. Typical Mahindra playbook. For those looking for all fit and finish, we will need to wait for iteration two I guess

2. In an era where doors do not have any key holes, the new THAR has one that protrudes on the driver side, the fuel lid and the rear. I hope they fix it before the Oct 2 Launch. That doesn't look neat at all.

3. The engine options are really good. The MSTALLION looks good for a vehicle of this size and applicability. I hope it delivers on its promise. Am I the only one who thinks the power output is underplayed here. The engine has the capability to deliver more. Once again, holding back for their Iteration 2 I guess

4. The infotainment could have been bigger. I see there is space, it would have provided a good view for the driver. I am not saying the 7 inch is bad, but when you look, you see that there is an opportunity to add an additional 1 or 2 inches there. Maybe it is the weather sealing that is taking more space I guess

5. Both the AX and LX series come with standard head lamps. Why can't they add a projector head lamps. So many designs to choose from. Also anyone thinking how the rectangular lamps will look like in this design. Just thinking wild!

6. The 50:50 rear seat split is good. In a vehicle that is short of boot space, this comes as a blessing and one can play around to ensure that the rear passenger gets the best comfort.

7. The options included for AX and LX are good, but as customers we need more. Maybe a luggage rack with box, Jerry cans,

8. I presume the Thar will have a capacity to tow. Why wasn't that information provided. Have they concluded that we will not tow anything with our vehicles

Overall I am super impressed by the effort of Mahindra. Honestly still some way to go, but the MSTALLION + AT is literally pushing me to make a call. I am going to wait for it and see how the OCT 2 pricing is going to be. I hope they price it sensibly and don't make it a lifestyle product pricing. They need to realize that the next competitor is some miles away, so better take advantage now.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

I love it so much!

Its a great move by Mahindra. It won't be cheap but with the amount of people who are ready to pay 15 - 20 lakhs for tens of thousands for crossovers every year, there will certainly be some who would love to own something more rugged and personel with some character. The icing on the cake is that it is thoroughly modern in every way, from the chassis to the engine, a long-list of standard safety equipment and comfortable interiors.

Kudos to Mahindra for taking a risk and not being a fraidy-cat like Maruti (Jimny).

If anyone missed it, here are the variants:

Perfect launch of a truly capable SUV.
- Multiple engine and transmission options
- Loaded with almost all features and bit much more for Off-Road enthusiasts
- Looks good, designed with off road goal in mind with practically of evryday car

2 questionable things, the grill is a hit or miss. Well other is the car has very less cargo space or its non existant.

I was seriously considering this, but my farmhouse duties require decent cargo space with atleast 4 people on board. Will wait till I see this in person.

A big car has a small grille - which is not proportionate to the overall size I feel. They kind of messed it up in the face itself aside the gorgeous overall proportions - personal opinion

Tagging my own post as I should have dropped a pic of wrangler’s bumper and grille design and pasted onto our home made wrangler I only wish Jeep won’t raise any suit against this now.

Pics sourced from internet and autocar india.

Mahindra packaged the Thar well. Hope it drives well too to use as a daily commuter. It may take some time to digest the front grill, especially with the contrasting body colors.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Brilliant job by Mahindra! Love it! They got a lot of stick for the first gen when it came out and rightly so. But boy, am I glad that they took that feedback in the right spirit and took time with this one! kudos! That grille is fine and can be fixed easily in the after market. Will be nitpicking to go after that today. Everything looks good inside out. Let's hope things are screwed up well though. The Marazzo & 300 fills me with confidence!

Hope they don't price it too high and go for economies of scale rather. It will be expensive, but hey you got to pay for quality and taste in design. I just hope they do not forget the humble enthusiasts out here. And this Thar can be a single car garage - that's the beauty of it.

Super proud to see Kochi in that list of 3 cities! And, I don't think I have ever waited for Gandhi Jayanti this badly. Cheers M&M!

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

New Thar looks lovely. M&M have gone all out in giving options.

Petrol/Diesel
MT/AT
HT/ST
Side facing seats/front facing seats

Kudos for the safety on offer too

Dual Airbags
ABS
ESP
Roll over mitigation
Hill start assist
Hill descent control
ISOFIX

Paint quality, interior quality & layout looks good. Thar is now more practical as a daily driver

I don't understand the startegy of revealing prices at a later date . Why spend on another event to reveal prices and lose out of the excitement of product unveil?

Looks like M&M has gone back to their own recycle bin and resurrected this abomination.
The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86-picture_51729.jpg

I find that grille design extremely hard to digest. I have a feeling that this has a lot to do with the US roxor controversy. M&M has removed all the classic jeep elements from the thar - exterior hood latches, “door cutouts above the bottom portion of the side body panels,” and a “boxy body shape with flat appearing vertical side and rear body panels ending at about the same height as the hood.”

M&M had an opportunity to give a proportionate answer in its home market where it holds the cards and the right to the design. Yet it seems to have thrown it away for what I am guessing is another shot at the US market. Somehow i feel that classic jeep soul is lost in this vehicle ( I cannot bring myself to call it a jeep)

Ananthan Ramkripa, Chief of Design highlights the increased width of the new Thar, and how it was important to eliminate styling cues, such as the side embossing that made the design look dated, while also retaining the Thar's signature silhouette.

People who are worrying about the grill, it can be customized at a negligible cost. So no worries there. Just enjoy the rest of the car. If I can get one for around 15L, I'll be a happy customer.
