Re: Volkswagen Taigun | A Close Look & Preview

Now that Skoda Kushaq launch(debacle) is over, anyone knows when the next Taigun events like interior reveal, covered drive, price reveal are planned?

What is the price prediction for Taigun GT variant? My guess is it will be priced illogically high if Skoda example is anything to go by.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun | A Close Look & Preview

VW had already informed (maybe subtly or veiled) that their Taigun offering will be at a premium above Skoda Kushaq, isn't it?

If that's the case, it makes no logic for those disappointed with the Kushaq pricing, to expect on this thread that they can find hope in the pricing of Taigun. Highly unlikely (considering Taigun will feature the panoramic sunroof, full digital instrumentation plus maybe some other features).

Well, T-Cross is on sale in international market from more than a year.
I recall watching the reviews more than an year ago...
Taigun is essentially T-Cross rebadged for India.

If you think it that way, eventhough Skoda says that Kushaq is a brand new unique product made as part of India 2.0 but it is T-Cross in Skoda's skin +- few features

PS: these points are my thoughts/understanding and I might be wrong!

The international T-Cross and it‘s sibling Skoda Kamiq are based on MQB A0 Polo platform whereas Taigun/Kushaq are based on cost optimised MQB A0 IN platform. The international T-Cross/Kamiq are slightly bigger, properly built without cost cutting, 5-star safety rated and offers much more features compared to Taigun/Kushaq. Of course they are expensive compared to the India counterparts.

It seems VAG is planning to rebadge India Taigun as T-Cross and sell it in other cost conscious markets.

Well, my point was that they are the same car barring the badge and yes the cost optimization.
Think of it this way, the swift that we have here is different from the japanese swift dimensionally, features wise and built.
So if suzuki decides to name the Swift some "Teevr/Tezz" in India, does that make it a totally different car?

For an SUV aimed primarily at up-and-coming young professionals and families, this does not seem very suitable. But, hey, who know? Kia Seltos got away with "Badass" which may have emboldened VW to go with this kid of tagline.
Hustle has positive connotations too.
To 'keep hustling' is to not get bogged down by the adversities and doing everything you can to overcome.

Infact the Taigun website has the below line about Hustle Mode:
"Bringing their A-game to the table, with every waking day – hour – minute & second"

Though I do not agree with the rest of the description there, which implies to hustle is to (over)achieve.

Having said that, all these quotes/phrases are meaning less unless one can relate to it.

In an interview, actor Ashish Vidyarthi, mentions how his mindset has changed for better, when he saw a hoarding of TATA Steel, which read "Hum Steel bhi banate hain"

During his formative years, he used to be bullied by others for his colour (they called him kaaloo). He was poor and used to feel inferior. But when he saw that hoarding, he realized there are other facets to him.

Well actually, there have been mixed signals on the relative price positioning of the Taigun and the Kushaq. Initially, VW did indicate that the Taigun would be priced at a premium to the Kushaq. However, more recently, there were some signals to media where Volkswagen indicated a more aggressive price for the Taigun and the possibility of it being priced below the Skoda.

The country head indicated that VW will definitely not lose sight of volumes:

“Of course, we are here to be competitive, we are here for the volumes, but at the same time, we will not compromise on our DNA.

Having seen the pricing of the Kushaq, the likelihood that it would garner volumes of anywhere over 2000 units a month is really low. The group needs a volume seller to reach the goals of 5% market share at least by 2025 (roughly 250,000 cars a year or 20,000 cars a month). The group have already declared that they will not be competing at the lowest end of the market in compact hatchbacks, compact sedans and other sub-4m vehicles. So, the main vehicles that will bring them the volume will be these two mid-sized SUVs and the upcoming midsized sedans based on the same platform. So other than the Taigun, they have few other cards left in their hand to play to reach anywhere near these kind of volumes.

So, I do expect that there is a strong possibility of the Taigun being priced below the Kushaq, including an inaugural launch price for base variant starting below 10 lakhs. The Taigun Trendline variant could strip off a few things from the Kushaq Active quite easily and still end up reasonably equipped. There could also be narrower price gaps in the variant distribution, compared to the Kushaq, in which there is a spread of 1.5 lakhs or higher between any two variants.

By bringing out more variants including the GT line, the Taigun could cater to a wider price band and pull in volumes at the lower end of the range in the 10 to 12.5 lakh category. The group absolutely needs to have a volume play in India, and this is probably their only chance to position themselves to reach the kind of volumes that they are aspiring for. If both these SUVs end up overpriced and bringing in low volumes, the company will be stuck in the same rut that they have been in the last 10 years - with great products, but not enough volumes to justify long-term growth and survival.

India may well turn out to be one of the last bastions of internal combustion engines and offers an interesting diversification opportunity for the global auto majors like VW, as the developed world quickly electrifies and new competitors like Tesla emerge. Given the growing population and aspirations in India from now till around 2035 and the low possibility of rapid adoption of electric cars due to constrained infrastructure, the group could keep selling good volumes of IC cars here for the next 15 years. This will help diversify their revenue base, instead of solely relying on electric cars, which will be a much more competitive arena, where differentiation will be harder and risks higher.

T-Cross was unveiled in Q4 2018 and has been on sale in Europe, China and Latin America since Q1 2019.

Taigun is just an adapted MQB-A0-IN version with increased wheelbase.

P.S. Please do correct me if you meant this as the Taigun itself being sold in cost-concious markets as T-Cross/ LWB T-Cross rather than the version sold in Europe and LatAm currently.

Kushaq is basically a Kamiq which in itself is the T-Cross Škoda edition (The T-Cross was launched 6 months earlier)

Both these "for India" products aren't true India products and have been sold for over two years internationally before even being launched in India. They however do have some platform changes and aren't completely identical to their international counterparts.

That's incorrect. Both the Kushaq and the Taigun are ~100mm longer (all of which goes to the wheelbase) than the Kamiq and T-Cross respectively. The width and height however are identical.

Am not sure who I spoke with as I keep getting these calls. He did say from VW Andheri though.

I didn't ask for a discount or further details for two reasons:
1. I switched off when he said it is a four seater and not a comfortable 5 seater (and also mentioned the hump is significant).
2. The other reason I didn't ask for discount etc is because based on my experience last year with T-Roc, they were not giving discounts at all as the car was getting picked up easily. Even the last Demo car at the Prabhadevi showroom was being discounted for very little that time and didn't make sense.
