Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

I am planning to buy a cheap, used small car to serve two purposes.

1. Wife wants a small car for her daily run about. She is returning to driving after a long break, so do not want a new car. Wants a reliable small car that is easy to drive and easy to maintain. Do not want to spend too much time in the workshop.
2. Its my dream to buy a SS80.

Saw this following ad here The car is single owner, recently completed works. I will be seeing it next Monday.

I have a few questions with regard to SS80.

1) Is the price quoted realistic.
2) How reliable can a 1985 car be, when used as a daily run about?
3) Are parts easy to find?
4) Is this a good decision to buy SS80 for both purposes, or should I buy another car for wife and keep dreaming?

I would really appreciate opinion of SS80 experts here.

here are the answers to your queries
1.The price will depend on the condition, originality, etc.STD ss80's have got sold from Rs.20000/- to Rs.50000/- recently.
2.As reliable as any properly maintained 25 year old car can be!
3.Original japanese parts are almost nonexistent, repro parts are available in select shops, but prices are more than that of other 800 models.
4.Very difficult question to answer, if you are not much particular about ss80 ,the next model(type1 SB308) will be better option as a daily runabout .

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Here's a very original but sadly a bit abused SS80 I often see in Sec'bad. It'd come to my familiar garage today to get some work done on the fuel filler flap.

The original upholstery is intact and even the inspection sticker! Even the paint seems to be the original still with the strips on the rear as well, and even better than mine! If only it had a little more TLC!

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Sad to see such a nice car in this state. Perhaps the car has been relatively less used. But the while it was used it was in the wrong hands.

Hope someone saves the car from this present state!

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

@basilmabraham

Practicality:SB308
Exclusivity/Fun Factor: SS80
Value For Money: anybody's guess

As a daily runabout SS80 though not a bad car, but SB308's are a better bet since nearly all the parts are available at the dealer service center.
SB 308's score over the SS80 in terms of Space as well. Also for a good 95-96 model you would need to shell out 40-50k. Which is almost the same as a good SS80. Since I use one as a daily runner, I can vouch for its bullet proof reliability and practicality.
Prices of the SB308 (Type 1 1986-96) in Kerala, has been flat over the last 4-5 years. So you can enjoy almost Nil depreciation. That said, I would refrain from Speculating on SS80 prices.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

That Delhi car (DBC***) seems decent and original. Nice to see all those original fittings still intact though it will slowly but surely sink to a worse condition in the coming days. Hope it is preserved.
As a daily runner i agree with Sureshkishore a decent condition SB 308 would be ideal as parts are very easy to come by, can be bought for a cheap amount, and is easy to maintain too. In Lucknow SS80 cost 18 to 35 K depending on the condition, OTOH the SB 308 ranges from 30 to 50K (AC variant). Cheaper ones requiring some major repair (such as worn rings, shot suspension, rust buckets) are available for 18 to 24k.

yes it seems to be in ORIGINAL Paint and the car most likely to have done less than 30000 mileage, even the original metal hubcaps are intact
My deduction is that this belonged to a GOI official based in DELHI ,who must have rarely used it because of the availability of official vehicle. But as suresh kishore pointed out it is now in the wrong hands.
The car still could be made into a ""class"" one with a little effort, since everything OE is still there except for the elusive Amber coloured park lenses by TOKAI DENSO.

Yes, agree with you, it must have been sparingly used until recently, hence still complete! I too hope it finds a better home.
Incidentally, I always find it parked on the roadside in the colony where it resides, outside an apartment building (maybe lack of available parking space inside.) There are 2 more SS80s there, in the same colour! one of them a DX, they also are parked outside often.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Thanks Suresh, Ajay and Samsag.

I am back in India this Monday. Will look around to see if I can find a decent AC SB308 for around 50k. I want the car to be reliable, as my wife would be driving it around. I don't want her to be in the workshop for most of the time. The SS80 is still a dream. So a hard choice to make. Will update you all on the decision soon.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Did the SS80 come with Door mirrors as OE? If so, are they still available? 'thinking of fitting one in my car since it already has had a door mirror fitted earlier.
