Suzuki Jimny stability control 'phantom skid' problem uncovered



An ESP stability control fault affecting the the new Suzuki Jimny will not yet be the subject of a recall or delay UK deliveries, despite being confirmed by the Japanese brand.

Autocar uncovered the issue with the second-generation small 4x4, which goes on sale in the UK in January, during test drives for the World Car of the Year awards in California. On two test cars the Electronic Stability Programme caused disturbing on-road behaviour in specific circumstances.

During certain cornering conditions the Jimny's ESP system brakes an individual front wheel as if to correct a skid that isn’t actually occurring. The effect is to cause the car to rock from side-to-side, as the front spring of the braked wheel compresses and expands with the pulsing intervention of the ESP. The condition can also affect one of the rear wheels.

Chief Jimny programme engineer Hiroyuki Yonezawa attended the event with Autocar, alongside an Australian journalist, and experienced the same issue once it had been demonstrated. Two test cars were provided, both exhibiting the same behaviour.

Suzuki says that this behaviour has not previously appeared during Suzuki’s development testing, which included UK roads, or during the international launch event in Germany. Autocar’s own UK road test did not trigger the problem either.



Once alerted, Suzuki immediately despatched additional engineers to the Angeles Crest Highway near Pasadena, California, to investigate. They were able to replicate the behaviour, but have not been able to reproduce it at the company’s test facility in Japan.

In a statement, Suzuki has said that "the continuous activation" of stability control occurred "when a specific road condition, tilt angle in the road, incline and slope, and degree of the curve was combined with a certain level of speed."

"There is a possibility that the (stability control) is instantaneously switched on (by) reacting to the vehicle sway when departing the S-shaped curve - and then consecutively switches on because the vehicle is circling the curve at high speeds."

During this reporter’s test of the car, with chief engineer Yonezawa aboard, the Jimny was driven briskly not only on the particular incline and bend sequence that triggered the behavior, but along an eight mile stretch of the Angeles Crest Highway. On this longer section the nearside front wheel occasionally braked, as did the offside rear wheel.

Suzuki has also said that ‘the intervention of the stability control may give a sense of discomfort to the driver but is not an event that would disturb the vehicle’s direction of movement.’ This would reporter would agree that the vehicle’s direction of travel remains unaltered.

But the side-to-side rocking motion triggered by quick-repeat, single wheel brake interventions, which occurred only on one particular stretch of road taken at a speed higher than the (cautious) mandated limit, would probably alarm an inexperienced driver.

Suzuki says that it will "further analyse the event and carefully consider how to adjust the program while maintaining the Jimny’s performance balance. Therefore, we regret to say we are unable to inform you when exactly we will be able to implement any changes to the program at the moment."

I wonder if increased global demand will push Suzuki to move some share of manufacturing to India which would eventually result in India launch inevitably.

New Suzuki Jimny-based pickup to debut at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Called the Jimny Sierra ‘Pickup Style’, no plans have been announced to put the concept into production.

It also features two towing hooks on the front bumper, retro wheels with Bridgestone Dueler all-season tyres, new skid plates and distinct off-road lights mounted on a rack. It also gets a unique wood panel on the sides. The wood panel on the Jimny pickup features the logo of the Suzuki Rhino Club – the brand’s rhino conservation initiative.

The cute off-roader isn't cute anymore

We can't deny that the Suzuki Jimny is one of the hottest nameplates these days that Americans will never have. Well, at least not yet, but we'll see. In fact, the car is so in demand, Suzuki is having a hard time to keep up with the demand for the mini off-roader.


Among the traits that make the Jimny such a desirable vehicle is its toyish appeal. We're not sure if it's the size, the color, or both, but one thing's for sure, we want one in our garage. But what if the Jimny suddenly got a change of personality and turned into a sinister-looking badass off-roader?




That's what Wald International wanted to do with the Jimny Black Bison Edition. Just like the other Black Bison Editions made by the Japanese tuner, the Jimny gets a dark treatment that somehow changed how the mini 4x4 looks. Not that we're complaining, though. We like this dark, new demeanor.

Based on the Japanese Sierra version of the Jimny, which is the one sold globally, the Jimny Black Bison Edition is given a four-piece LED on the redesigned front bumper, complementing the new grille, headlight covers, and the aero bonnet. The over-fenders also connect with the front and rear bumpers to emphasize the off-road tires and aggressively-styled rims. At the roof, more LED is added to the front while a rear wing is available at the back – a little peculiar but it is what it is.

The Jimny Black Bison edition is clearly overdone and looks cartoonish, to say the least. It is an effort to portray Jimny as a Military grade 4X4 on something on those lines, which clearly it is not.

I mean honestly, how many of us would be brave enough to be seen in this one?

One major part of Jimny’s appeal is its no-nonsense design which is a function of its intended purpose. It has diminutive dimensions, thereby making it manageable around narrow streets of rural/urban Europe, it has the heritage of a very much loved Jimny and heritage is something that should never be taken lightly.

FCA sells a quarter of a million of its overpriced Wranglers partly because of it’s WW II heritage. And last but not the least the novelty; I mean look around yourself in whichever market you may be; is there a single 4X4 with a proper low range transfer case that needs to engaged with a lever and not some plasticky knob on the console coupled with excellent approach/departure/break-over angles that costs less than USD 20,000 and looks like nothing else on the street while being reasonably reliable. Besides Jimny in European market had clearly aged and had started resembling other cute utes. The newer iteration is a throwback on 90’s design language and has hit a chord among a large number of potential customers across segments; a large majority of whom had become bored by the similar looking “SUVs” that one would be hard-pressed to differentiate in a parking lot.

Honestly if Suzuki had not launched the Gypsy in the India market back in the 80s, not many would have rooted for this great little 4X4 because for a large majority of us Gypsy/Jimny also has an emotional connect & emotions play a big part in the vehicular purchase notwithstanding the lack of a proper 4X4 in the Indian market (barring Thar & I don’t know if I should count the Force Gurkha). The same way that a few hundred/thousand Americans are saying on various automotive forums that Jimny should be launched in the US market for a large number of these people either drove Jimny when they were in high school/college or someone close to them had one. Although I must say that the chances of that happening are next to nil for Suzuki has nothing in its portfolio that is even a little bit relevant for the US market.

As for Suzuki’s lack of willingness to launch it in India at least in the foreseeable future; well, enough has been said on that subject.

The G has various sub-models catering to different user groups. The G500 SWB or those extreme G550 4x4s are in a different league altogether.

Comparing a 1.5 Lt Jimny to a 4-door G is not very different from those WhatsApp forwards that seek to push a story based on pre-determined & selective data-points. It’s a blinkered approach at best.
