Re: Mahindra XUV700 Review

Can I just hazard a guess? ADAS brings car to stop. Car thinks it's at signal and goes into snooze mode to save fuel. You need to slightly give throttle for it to come back to life. And not dive for start button. I wasn't there so just thinking aloud

For me, it is a GO.

I cannot wait too long since I don't own a functioning car at the moment. I am living off a borrowed one whose owner will need it back by February 2022. I want a vehicle in the D1 segment. The ones in the segment below feel too small for my requirements and in the segment above, feel too big.

I need something with decent ground clearance since I live in Bangalore. That rules out sedans.

The Innova got vetoed by the HM as it doesn't have a variant with a sunroof

Hyundai Alcazar wasn't considered as I got spooked by the GNCAP ratings of its cousin which shares the same platform: the Kia Seltos

The T-Roc and Jeep compass felt cramped.
XUV 500 was discarded on account of the 700's launch.

That just left the following:
MG Hector, Tata Harrier & Safari, Hyundai Tucson, XUV 700.

The Hector just did not feel good to drive (very bad throttle response in the petrol AT, I don't want an MT). Also, I was put off by the fact that they promised to share safety ratings and then didn't.

That left the Tatas, the Tucson and the XUV700.

Having looked at and driven the XUV700 and the Tatas, I am left with no doubt that the XUV is equal or better on every metric that I care about (better in features, performance and after sales service, equal in ride quality)

So, it is XUV700 vs Tucson.

The Tucson is a wonderful car. I loved it. There were a couple of things which could be better: namely the low seating position in the back row and the quality of the brakes but nothing that is a deal breaker.

If the new feature-laden Tucson with a longer wheel base and 7 seats had been launched in our market, I'd probably have gone for it, but as things stand, the Tucson is a smaller car with fewer features that costs almost 8 lakhs more OTR in Bangalore (Remarkably, the difference in engine refinement is minimal at best).

So, it will have to be the XUV.

Re: Mahindra XUV700 Review

This is what I had said earlier, gathering from a reliable insider.
Mahindra XUV700 Review-screenshot_20211003200134__01.jpg

The same reliable source has got me following today.

- They are facing a huge crisis of semiconductors, as we already know.
- There's a top down decision to prioritise XUV700 production (based on semiconductors availability) over other cars untill March'22. So it will affect badly Thar & XUV300 deliveries.
- Keeping AWD and Luxury option pack separate was a decision to make the product price attractive and we might see fully loaded AWD version soon, in the 1st price up from Mahindra (estimated Q2 2022).
- They had about 1%-1.5% failures of Brake pads in the long testing runs.
- Although it's a small issue, they have changed the source of the brake pads and the issue stands resolved.
- However, the first lot has been produced with old brake pads and future production lots will have new brake pads.
- The issue might occur after few thousand KM run or it might not occur at all. But the impact is limited mostly to the month one deliveries.
- He assured that this is most thoroughly & extensively tested car and will face negligible to none niggles, as compared to XUV500.
- He advised to go ahead with the booking if I like the drive (scheduled for tomorrow) because they are most likely to fall behind in deliveries and internally already convinced about it.
- Another interesting bit; he owns a XUV500 and assured that 5 seater XUV500 will be launched by 1st quarter of 2023 and will sit in between XUV300 and XUV700. Expect a round or two of price increase for XUV700 to make way for XUV500.

Will post my drive experience tomorrow.

Re: Mahindra XUV700 Review

So here is my Experience with the XUV700 in one of the showrooms in my Place.

Even though we have decided that we would be buying the AX7L pet AT and done with the initial Booking by paying 21K, we thought of visiting the Showroom and have a look at the vehicle.

So, this is how it started:
  • Called up the Showroom to check the availability of the vehicle to have a look and also possibility of the Test Drive. Was informed that, The Display Vehicle is an AX7 Automatic but the Test Drive is a Diesel Manual AX7.
  • Visited the Showroom in the Afternoon, and there I realized that they Indeed had a Grand Unveiling Ceremony, with the Decorations, the Chairs, Balloons, the Shamiyanas, people Roaming around Wearing the XUV700 Tshirts, etc etc.
  • Was welcomed with huge Excitement and friendliness by the Staff. Noted down my Details and Assigned me a Sales Executive.
  • The Guy Started Explaining me about the Car, Tires, Colors etc. and for few of my queries he did not have a Solid/Confident Answer. Then i had to give him a hint that, i have Far better Knowledge about this Car than him, and hence started explaining my family about each and every small to big Feature of this Car.
  • So, we had a clear look at the Interiors and the finish. This is Indeed a PREMIUM looking Car at a Reasonable Price.

Now, Coming to my Observations on the Car:
  1. The Car is Indeed a Big Leap in terms of Premium-ness and Looks compared to the XUV500. This is Definitely a Perfect upgrade for anyone from XUV500.
  2. The Interiors are Top Class: The Gear Lever, Steering Wheel, the Sky-Roof, the Seats are really very Comfortable too. But the Interiors are too whitish and will be a Pain to maintain these.
  3. A Special Mention to the Infotainment System and its CLARITY of Display. No Matter from which Angle you see the Screen, it had a Crisp Display. The Touch is too good to feel and even the Touch Response is pretty good than what i had Imagined. There is not much Lag in Response. But few might feel it is slow to react. I feel, it is how it is Designed : to give a Smooth Effect.
  4. The Boot when you knock, you will definitely feel the "plastic sound". But in terms of Quality, i did not feel anything as Low or Cheap. And the Boot Door is Heavy too.
  5. Another Update is: As mentioned in few of the Previous Posts, the Sales Executive also confirmed that, the Door trims would be Changed in the delivery Vehicles. He said that it would be changed to match the Seat Colors. but was not sure if it will be Leather or Plastics.

Now, Coming to the Test Drive:
  • There was around 15mins of waiting as i was 3rd in Queue for the TD. The formality was smooth and well managed at the Dealership.
  • The vehicle Came back from Test Drives, and they asked me to jump in and start my Drive.
  • The Driver Seat Adjustment, Seat belt Adjustment, Steering Adjustment, All worked Good. But .
  • The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) was not ready to let me start the Drive . Do whatever you want, the EPB was not at all getting Disengaged. Even the Sales Exec. with me did not have any clue. He asked me to Open/Close Door, Restart the Car, Remove Seat belt and Put it ON again, Press/Depress Brake multiple times, Press/Depress Clutch, Change Gears 1>N, N>1, N>R. But No, the EPB did not get Dis-engaged.
  • The Other Guys from the showroom started gathering around the car and each one with their suggestions to do some or the other thing. But none worked. . Then they called an "XUV700 Specialist" from their showroom who had gone to the Training for a Week to the Mahindra Plant or wherever it was supposedly held. He stood by the driver window, and asks me to do the same things which we already did 10-15 times. but no Solution Still. The only thing all this while Happening with several tries was that, the EPB used to get Dis-Engaged for 2-3 Seconds and again getting back Engaged on its Own.
  • So, he decides to take Matters to his own hands and asks me to step out of the Driver seat and he jumps in. Tries all the Possibilities but still NO change. Just to keep us in Confidence, he tried to say us that: This might be Due to "some ADAS Functionalities" so he will Disable all of them. He tries again, But NO USE. He threw in another Wild Guess that, this could be due to "Driver Drowsiness System" being triggered and which would make the vehicle to Stall for 10-15 mins so that the Driver is REFRESHED (Lol !! ) .
  • Still he tries to figure out many settings in the Driver MID, the Main Infotainment System. But nothing was working.
  • Now, He decides to call up another XUV700 Expert (Mostly at the Head Office or the Training Centre). As soon as the call got Connected, the EPB gets Disengaged (Looks like the call had some special Powers). He Explained him on what happened and both of them did not have any Opinion on why it happened.
  • Then, he comes out and I jump into the Driver seat. This time, No problems with the EPB. (luckily).
  • Now, coming to the actual Test Drive experience: YES, This is the BEST Car in this Segment in terms of Drive, driver Comfort, Middle Row Comfort and the Features it offers for the Driver like Blind Spot Monitoring and etc. I felt, even the Shock absorbers are a great Upgrade from the XUV500. The Steering wheel is Really Light and easy to use in the City Traffic. (I prefer not to go in Detail as this is already shared by multiple Folks in this Thread). Overall, I was very Happy with the test Drive of the vehicle.

So Apart from the EPB Issue, there is nothing else to Complain. But, a thought Running at the Back of the Mind after this Incident: Too many electronics, Features in a car is a Boon or a Bane?

I had another Question to ask our Friends here:
Did anyone get a Acknowledgement or a Receipt or anything from the Dealer after paying the Booking amount of 21,000 or something?

Should I wait for a year atleast to see how the car performs in the real world? What could go wrong with a turbo petrol manual car? I am hoping the basics are covered by Mahindra and any niggles as a new car is around the electronics and gadgets. Looking at the variant spread it makes sense to either buy a fully loaded AX7 ( which I prefer not to for reasons above+budget constraints) or go for a basic variant MX and add accesories like 17 inch alloys, reverse camera etc. Thoughts?

Many thanks!
Not enough details to provide a good suggestion. You havent mentioned your yearly running to justify a diesel. However, if it's only base MX version you are looking at, the difference between the P & D = 50,000/-, which is not much.

Nothing wrong in a base version devoid of gizmos, you also may need to understand how well / poorly will it be loaded, before signing up for it. Most likely, the base variant will be in production only for few months, it's to use as a marketing gimmick till the bookings are garnered, so if you really wish to book it, better to be done now.

Hyundai should sell the remaining stock of Tucson and bring in the new version quickly or perhaps just leave that segment for now, slow sales anyway.

So, I went to the showroom in Gurgaon late night at around 9'o clock and took 1 hour very long test drive (had a contact at the showroom).

Before the XUV700, I also took long test drives of Safari and Innova on the same day so that I could compare them better with fresh impressions. Here is how it went.

The car had good build and a very strong engine response, but engine noise does creep into cabin. The engine noise though is less and not bothersome. I could only hear the engine noise when the music was completely turned off. Tried all the three modes. The engine noise in the Innova is very high while the Safari is comparable. Still it has more noise than XUV700.

The performance is good in Zap and Zoom mode, but with the revs, the engine noise increases in Zoom mode. Surprisingly, Zip mode is powerful in its own right and is useable in cities as well as on highways. Change of mode is not quick (it's very quick in the Safari and Innova with physical button) and takes 2-3 seconds to be activated. In the Safari, Eco mode is very weak not usable, in the Innova, Eco mode is also powerful and can be used on highway. The lag in the XUV700 is very well controlled and you don't feel it as such. The drive is very smooth. Innova's drive doesn't feel smooth from the driver's perspective.

Gearbox is a work of art. You don't feel any judder or even a gear change in Zip and Zap modes. It's very smooth and refined. Safari's gearbox is also great, shifts are smooth and you don't feel them. The Innova is the worst offender in this regard.

The handling is good. It handles corners very well. Even at triple digit speeds stability in a straight line and in turns and twists is very good, Even fast lane changing is brilliant. Body roll is present, but it is very controlled. Innova has least body roll and handles well.

The music system is more focused towards clarity rather than base. Since it is a long car you find base to be less punchy but just toggle the equalizer and subwoofer settings and the base is good enough. Even at 100% volume the sound is crystal clear and 3d sound is not a gimmick it does work. The speakers on the roof are more for producing 3d effect and clarity, They are not too loud and that's a good thing since the speakers are very close to your ears. (Music system in innova is very bad, safari's music system is good its loud and subwoofer has very good base, clarity and depth on high volume are good but not great)

The infotainment screen is good and responsive, even tried the wireless android auto and it works flawlessly. Another important thing android auto works on full screen unlike some other cars(doesn't run on full screen in safari didn't try in innova). Bt music, radio everything is great ( infotainment is also good in safari didn't find any lag or problem, innova's infotainment has less features and is the slowest)

Imp: you have to shut down the engine to connect phone first time in xuv 700.

Speedometer is fabulous, navigation can also be seen on speedometer and in full screen nav mode its mind blowing just like audi's full screen map experience on speedometer. Lot of customisation. You will have to get used to it because there is a lot of info.(Safari has a smaller screen but the screen is high definition crisp and speedometer is also clear but has very little customisation and no digital speed, also you can see navigation symbols (turn signals) from android auto on speedometer (didn't try this on xuv700) innova has the smallest screen with very less features and no customisation at all and even the dials now look old)

Seats in the first and second row is awesome no problem at all (innova has best seating in second and third row after innova safari has better third row seats but I feel safari and xuv 700 are closely tied for second row, all the cars have good first row seats)

Comfort in the car is also good , suspension is best among all three cars it can literally chew potholes, i jumped the car off speedbreaker and potholes without slowing down and it didn't unsettle (innova also has almost equivalently good suspension and comfort , safari is the last and unsettles pretty quickly)

Exterior looks wise safari/harrier are best no comparison. Xuv700 also has good exterior looks but its more on the sportier side rather than muscle suv and will grow on you the more you look at xuv 700. Innova has complete mpv look to it nothing great nothing bad about looks of innova.

Interior wise xuv700 is far far and far better anything out there. Safari/harrier also has great interior but nothing compared to xuv700. Innova is very practical but thats about its interior nothing special nothing bad about its interior.

Fit and finish of xuv700 is good and you do get luxury feel when u sit inside the car. Its far better than previous mahindras and there is nothing to complaint about. I thoroughly checked the interior and its built tried rocking the centre console and the screens, there is a very slight flex but its solidly built.

Since it was a night drive head light performance was also very good. Tail light look awesome in night. Midnight black( dark blue colour) looks completely black at night. All the switches knobs are back lit and look very good at night.

Smartdoor handles are great but in L model they only close electronically and someone new in your or valet car who doesn't know this might break the handles of your car if they try to push close it a very costly affair.

Build quality is very good, no complaints but not as great as safari or innova.

Also nav is 3d but live traffic was not working alexa commands also work fine. Button quality of the a/c unit is ok but not great. Intelli control is good and very quick. Memory seats work great welcome function also work great and u will love it. Sunroof is large and tinted. Seperate alerts for seatbelt of side passenger and driver. Auto detects if side passenger is sitting or not.

Re: Mahindra XUV700 Review

The local dealership resembled a 'mela' with showroom packed to the brim. Just couldn't believe it. It's a dream launch for any car. I was wondering how did M&M drum up such a response? Was it the long anticipation for the car to launch, or the almost unending feature list? Why aren't other car manufacturers able to replicate this phenomenon? Reminded me of the Nano frenzy, but the pricing on this beauty is far from that (In fact a Rs 20 lakh bracket), so that intrigues me further. What are your thoughts, guys? Any insights?

The whole idea of a Base petrol is for the wonderful 200 bhp engine. The diesel is in a lower tune. Of course a fuel efficiency of 5 kmpl is expected.

Thank you swiftnfurious. I am not considering diesel as my running is low, 8k per year. Besides there is this fear of DPF issues in a BS6 vehicle. Hence do not want to opt for diesel. I think now buying a base variant of XUV700 may not be sensible with many basic features missing. I just learned that there is no power folding ORVM in MX variant. That is a miss for me. I may have to look else where. I think as an upgrade to my current swift either Scross Alpha AT makes sense or if I stretch my budget Innova Crysta GX AT petrol is the one to go for.

I was in the same boat.

If you run the numbers (by using the Mahindra Thar's petrol v diesel fuel economy as a benchmark), you will find that the extra 50-60K that you pay for the diesel variant will be recovered in 2-3 years, even with sparse usage.

I strongly urge people to calculate the actual numbers for their usage instead of using some old rules of thumb that were devised for smaller cars.

There are good reasons to go for the petrol: the higher levels of refinement of the petrol, the extra power the engine gives at the top end, DPF/Adblue hassles with the diesel and the NGT ruling that completely changed the equation in Delhi-NCR are all good reasons.

Fuel economy by itself is not, atleast not unless you are only driving 2000 km per year or some improbably low number like that.

Re: Mahindra XUV700 Review

I went to checkout the xuv700 on Saturday at VVC Mahindra in Kondapur. Here are my thoughts about the car as an owner of an Innova Crysta VX pre facelift model.

The car has a really good road presence and looks like a premium car. The front of the car might be overdone as per my liking but overall looks really good.

The infotainment screen looked sharp and by far has the best screen quality I have ever seen in any car till date. I did not get the chance to operate it as the showroom was packed that day and did not get the chance to sit in the front row seat.

Talking about the second row seat comfort, I am 6'1 and i found the second row to be more spacious than my Crysta in terms of kneeroom, headroom and legroom but the under thigh support was better in the innova . The leatherette seats were more firm than the innova which i felt had better comfort than the xuv700.The quality of the leatherette was top notch. Have to mention, The panoramic sunroof gave the cabin a lot of airiness and did not eat up the headroom.

Coming to the third row, getting into the third row seat was quite a task by itself. The folding mechanism was just like the innova which is pretty good. Sitting in the third row, the kneeroom and the legroom wasn't bad at all if the second row seat wasn't too reclined but the cardboard like piece at the back of the second row seat was not too comfortable to touch them with my knees which is not the case with the innova as it is just the fabric that is touching my knee. The headroom was non existent and a deal breaker especially if anyone is planning to buy this car who have tall teenagers. My dad who is 5'7 had better headroom and was generally more comfortable than me. The third row of the innova is miles ahead in terms of comfort overall. I would say the third row is best for short distances for people above the height of 5'7 and better left to kids for longer journeys.

The boot space with third row seats up even though a huge improvement compared to the xuv500, but was a major letdown for me. The boot floor space was good enough but the overall volume was compromised because of the overall design of the rear and especially when the third row seats were reclined. The Innova with its 300 liters usable space is much bigger in terms of volume compared to the xuv700.

The overall quality of the plastics were ok but there were places especially the lever to pull down the second row seat and the third row seat had rough edges and was hard to operate. The use of leatherette on the dasboard and the material on the door to rest our arms was really premium to the touch.

My final thoughts about the car is that Mahindra has done good job with the car and in my opinion it is worthy of asking 27 lakhs on road Hyderabad for the ax7L variant. Even though this cannot dethrone the Innova in terms of comfort overall, it is sure going to give some tough competition to the innova in terms of sales.

If the third row and the bootspace with the third row seats up is very important then look elsewhere.

Re: Mahindra XUV700 Review

Saw the car in the blue color. Its looks like a more refined version of the XUV 500 current version.

The car looked awesome overall and had amazing road presence! (Fortuner territory)

This will be a very successful car!
