Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Finally had a chance to TD the new Roxx in 4x4 Diesel AT Avatar @ Mahindra Koncept Automobiles Gurgaon

A few of my surprising observations-

1) The NVH was very poor , especially on the rear bench which had a crazy amount of vibration. It felt as if I was in a badly abused old Bolero of some sort. I inquired the sales guy about any issues that could be causing this in the TD vehicle and he assured me that everything was okay & this is how the Roxx behaves

2) The engine felt lethargic to me , the pull was very linear and didn't feel exciting enough couple that with the noise from the engine which wasn't refined at all, it sounded strained & out of breath.

3) I expected more space in the 2nd row , the amount of knee room felt unsatisfactory , however I am comparing it to my Harrier which lies a segment above.

4) The white interior was in terrible shape , it was really dirty & left a bad taste in my mouth. A darker interior is must here

I was surprised with such a mediocre experience while driving the ROXX , the TD vehicle had 5k KMs on the odo & the sales guy assured me that everything was alright with the vehicle. He alse told me that there are no drive modes for the Diesel , I also couldn't find any button to switch them but I didn't look hard enough.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Went to Sireesh Auto in Bommanahalli - Bengaluru to check out the car, this week. I've attached the latest prices as of December 2024.

We'd initially gone to check out the MX5 variant of the thar (which was also what was on display). We were quite happy with the space on offer and the gizmos that it had. When we went to test drive the car, they only had the AX7L on offer. The petrol engine was a blast to drive, but my god is it thirsty. The MID indicated a mileage of 5.2 Kmpl (Of course, I do understand that the car is in its run in period and the test drive vehicles aren't driven sanely). We did however find that the AX7L felt significantly more upmarket in terms of feel. Here are certain observations in this regard:

1. The MX5 has a manually adjustable drivers seat and the AX7L is electric. While this isn't a big deal, what we noticed was that in terms of height adjustment, the electric seat can be raised far higher than the manual seat. This was a big deal especially for my mother, who is on the shorter side.

2. I generally don't care for ADAS - however the blind view camera feed that pops up onto the gauge cluster is very useful in the city. The front parking sensors were also quite helpful. The 360 cameras were also very useful.

3. The Android Auto projection onto the gauge cluster (similar to Audi's virtual cockpit) is one of my absolute favourite features).

4. The Harman Kardon system was miles ahead of the regular speakers offered in the lower variants. I'm not an audiophile, but in terms of separation, bass and just overall clarity, one can really tell the difference. I believe that the sound stage can also be adjusted - have to check this out though.

Since mileage was a concern on the petrol, we decided to stick to diesel. The price difference between the MX5 D AT 2WD and the AX7L D AT 2WD was roughly 2,70,000. Since it was a long term purchase, we decided to go ahead and book the AX7L. We've been told the waiting period is 6 months - hope it reduces though!

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Can we expect a Thar 5 door 4*4 in petrol soon ? The 10 year diesel ban is a deterrent and it’s likely to be extended in other cities by 2025 .

Even I have booked with Sireesh but Bommasandra branch. Since Sireesh has couple of showrooms & only 2 TD vehicles of AX7L D 4X4 it keeps shuttling between the stores. Who is the SA you met?

I'd met Mr. Manu KC. I have requested for a test drive of the Diesel AT as well, just to get a feel of the diesel engine. When did you book your vehicle and what is the delivery timeline you're looking at?

Got to test drive the AX7L Diesel 4x4 AT for a good 15-20 kms. The car was brand new and had barely done 400 Kms. Here are some observations when compared to the earlier car I'd driven (AX7L Petrol RWD AT).

1. The Turbo Petrol engine is definitely way punchier. The diesel is by no means slow, but the lag in acceleration is definitely noticeable. Still, I would think it is enough for most who are more concerned about mileage and cruising than outright performance. Roll on acceleration is decently quick, but does require some planning. (Our MG ZS EV has spoiled me on this front ).

2. The Diesel 4x4 does not have Zip and Zoom Modes (Was not present on the Infotainment). It had Normal, Sand, Mud and Snow.

3. The refinement and NVH levels are good. The Diesel engine is silent at all times apart from when there is hard acceleration.

4. There is ample torque present throughout the rev range, and one can just coast about in a higher gear - If I remember correctly, 100 kmph was at about 1500 - 1700 RPM.

5. The MID (Despite this being a new vehicle and us driving it a little aggressively to see how it performs) was reading 8.2 Kmpl, with a range of somewhere around 1000 Kms.

Apart from these, here are a few of my observations about the car in general and some input about the ride quality as I had a chance to take it on some back roads today which were full of undulations.

1. The ride quality is nowhere near as good as the ZS EV for example (Or any other monocoque C Segment SUV) but is still totally liveable with. Smaller bumps are not even felt and it is only the large sharp bumps (or rumble strips - my worst enemy ) that rattle the entire cabin.

2. The under thigh support on the front passenger seat is not very good. It is decent at best. I'm about 5 ft 9 / 10 in - for reference.

3. The ground clearance is excellent and I could clear large potholes, ruts and speed breakers with no issue at all.

4. Sat in the back as well and while there was some body roll and movement over bumps, it was nothing that was not tolerable (Would strongly recommend that you still test this out yourselves as everyone's tolerance levels will vary).

5. Automatic Wipers worked pretty well (It was raining when I drove the car) and they automatically adjusted their interval timing as per the speed of the vehicle and the level of rain.

6. The Sunroof is gigantic and while it is only a nice to have feature, it makes the cabin feel large and airy.

7. Three large-ish people cannot sit in the back very comfortably.

Overall, I really do like the car and can only hope that we get it reasonably soon

Not uninformed, but only partially informed.

In the Thar Roxx, only the RWD variants get the Zip and Zoom drive modes. They also get terrain modes on top of this if i am not wrong but those will probably just alter the traction control response at most in the RWD. Maybe some BLD action.

On the 4X4 variants, you do not get any drive modes. It just Normal mode and the rest are terrain modes.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

One of the reasons for the slow delivery cycle could be an artificial scarcity created by Mahindra by not invoicing cars to dealers. Cars must be getting assembled and stocked at the plant.

A key motivator for this could be to increase prices which would result in higher gross margin for deliveries done at increased ex-showroom prices.

Introductory prices are great to tempt people to make bookings and then get emotionally invested with the associated urge/desperation to take delivery of the vehicle at whatever price Mahindra deems fit.

Keeps shareholders happy.

Quite a sad state of affairs really. Any idea about when the prices are likely to be hiked?
