I did the same stretch yesterday towards Bangalore. The "Bad" roads are after climbing the Shiradi ghats just before entering Sakaleshpur and until the 4 lane starts towards Hasan.

Its very much doable in a sedan. Apart from this stretch, the road conditions are alright. It was raining throughout the coastal and ghat section. Stuck to max speeds of around 50 to 60kmph on the rain-lashed roads.

Saw a few Bangalore bound cars speeding on these wet roads which can be very dangerous. The roads are deceptively treacherous/slippery when wet and it is critical to keep speeds in check to avoid hydroplaning especially around curves.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Did BLR - MLR - BLR Last week.

BLR - MLR : via Charmadi : Excellent roads all the way till Bantwal where they have been concreting in slow motion since a few years! A 5 minute stretch. Very doable.

MLR - BLR : via Shiradi : As many have mentioned, between Sakleshpura and Hassan the stretch is terrible. Very tedious in a sedan. And not a small stretch. Was driving from crater to crater for at least an hour, before we finally reached Hassan.

Definitely avoiding Shiradi on my next Mangalore drive.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I'm planning to Drive from Chennai to Udipi during the weekend and return on Tuesday.

The last time i did this trip was in February 2021 and i took the Hassan- Charmady - Manipal route and returned via the same route. The roads were pretty good then.

This time, I was thinking too taking the Hasan - Shiradi route, but looks like Charmady route is better.

Just one question.. since it has been raining continuously, is there any danger of landslides in the Charmady Ghat?

Charmady is any day better, but chance of landslide or rock/mud/tree fall on the road is also higher due to narrow roads and lack of landslide barriers on charmady.

I thought the stretch between Maranahalli (where concrete road ends) and Sakleshpura was even worst. That is the video I posted in the last page.

Shiradi Ghat closed due to landslide

Mangaluru, Jul 22: Traffic is completely blocked on Shiradi Ghat after a hill collapsed at Marnalli on Shiradi Ghat in Sakleshpur tauk, on Thursday July 22.

Commuters travelling to Bengaluru from Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district have been advised to move their vehicles on Charmadi Ghat road or any other alternative route.

The superintendent of police said, “It will be difficult for heavy vehicles to move on Charmadi and Madikeri roads and hence their movement has been banned on the road.

Damn, this means heavy traffic will move to Charmadi, making it very congested. Expect frequent traffic blocks.

I am traveling to Udupi tomorrow morning. Would Agumbe be a better option? Or would Tirthahalli - Siddapura - Kundapura - Udupi be better, considering some car traffic may take Agumbe as an alternate route too

Yes, Balehonnur-Sringeri-Agumbe route will be less crowded until Shiradi route is restored.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Shiradi Ghat open for light vehicles only, that too 6AM to 6PM
https://mahaxpress.com/shiradi-ghat-road-is-open/

On the other hand there is also news about land slide in Charmadi, but nothing about road status.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

More info on the Charmadi landslide

https://www.daijiworld.com/news/news...?newsID=856164

Would you guys suggest to go from n Bangalore to Udipi via
a. Shiradi - Since it is partially open to light vehicular traffic
b. Charmadi - Since the landslide is not that serious, but traffic has been banned from 7 pm to 6 am. (https://www.deccanherald.com/state/v...t-1012244.html)
c. Take Balehonnur-Sringeri-Agumbe route

We came by this route yesterday, from Nagara to Siddapura and Mangalore onwards. Hardly any traffic, although it was pouring heavily so that could be a reason too.

So we followed the gmaps to be a bit adventurous! It took us through Belur.
On our way back we went through in-roads (village roads) mostly. Though it was fun but was way too long for someone with pillion and saddlebags(nearly 150 odd kms). Finally hit the highway near Hassan and could cruise at 110-120 till the last toll near Nelamangala.
