Re: The Football Thread

Europa League update:

Man City lose to Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 and Liverpool lose to Braga SC 1-0.

Things should be interesting in the second legs of both these matches. It is imperative for Liverpool to try and win the Europa League so that they can play European Football next season. Or else they have to finish 5th which looks less and less likely given that Tottenham are ahead of them.

Teams finishing 5th to 8th in EPL, will qualify for Europa League. So, Liverpool will qualify (with their current form).

this time there is one less slot. since birmingham who are not in top 8, won the carling cup and will automatically qualify.

Yes you're right. Forgot about that (not the pain though :( ).

Are there 3 or 4 slots for Europa league in EPL? AFAIK, 2 slots go to the FA and Carling Cup winners and the third slot goes to the 5th placed team.

If any team who are not in the top 5, wins this cup, they get automatic entry and then the 6th place team lose out (in this case, it might be Liverpool),

My bad...

courtesy: Extra spot in Premier League for new UEFA Cup - Europa League | Football | Football | The Sport Review

In England, apart from the top four league places that lead to Champions League qualification, there are three spots for Europa League qualification: fifth place in the league; the winners of the Carling Cup and the winners of the FA Cup.
Like with the UEFA Cup, there will be a total of three places in the first of four qualifying rounds of the Europa League for Fair Play winners.
And following a change of the rules, should a team that has already qualified for Europe win the FA Cup this season, seventh place in the league will also lead to a Europa League spot.

UEFA Champions League update:

All round of 16 matches over. A really good match between Inter vs Bayern is the highlight. RM managed to break the hex and into QFs with a 3-0 win over Lyon. Here's the QF & Semis draw.

UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals Draw:
Real Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur
Chelsea vs Manchester United
Barcelona vs Shakhtar Donetsk
Inter Milan vs Schalke

Semi-finals Draw:
Real Madrid/Tottenham Hotspur VS Barcelona/Shakhtar Donetsk
Chelsea/Manchester United VS Inter Milan/Schalke

Interesting draw it is.
Barca had it easy.
Chelsea vs ManU is the pick of the lot and next would be RM vs Spurs.
Inter and Barca expected to progress to Semis easily
RM vs Barca possibility in Semis (would prefer them clashing in finals).

I hate fixtures between teams from the same league at this stage.
It doesnt give you the european feel!
anyway, real-spurs will be very attractive fixture, chelsea-united will be boring (obviously cos of chelsea :P) inter and barca will go through easily.

I feel united will meet barca in the final and take revenge for the loss 2 years ago!

Re: The Football Thread

Nice to see the football thread active on the forum.

@figo_united: Absolutely, this weekend was perfect for United. The title is ours to lose now given the fact that no body else wants to win it.

Champions league returns so late night football action begins. If only Tata Sky would start beaming Ten Action+!! I would at least be saved the hassle of looking for live feeds on the web.

Re: The Football Thread

Yep. A perfect EPL weekend for ManU.
A really good match it was, with WHU. Being 2-0 down with 30 mins to go, and to win 4-2 shows a lot of character. Ronney's hatrick is good time to come by. Inform Rooney will make ManU, a much more stronger team than it is.

Meanwhile, Arsenal is clearly struggling :(
Now its ManU's title to lose now but hoping for some miracle to get Gunners the title.

Yeah, Rooney is in red hot form, and hence the FA wants to ban him for a couple of matches now

Re: The Football Thread

Great result for United yesterday!
Although the penalty decision went our way, we were definitely due one. We've had some terrible decisions against us in the recent past at the bridge!
So its justice done, and still a long way to be even with chelsea on those terms!

regarding the other 3 matches, there is no need of playing the 2nd leg at all
