Re: The Running / Marathon Thread

Follow up now.

I had recurring knee pain back after running two days. I went and checked my gait at ASICS and found that I have severe overpronation. It wasn’t funny watching the video. They suggested the ASICS kayano 27, which at 13k was eye watering.

Can someone please recommend good solid shoes for overpronation available here? Some brands I know which do shoes for overpronation and available here are new balance, ASICS. Anyone else?

I also looked up the lower end of the budget for ASICS. Is that recommended?

I will only use these shoes for walking 3-4 kms a day, and mountain hikes of upto 25 kms a day. Guess, I will use the same shoes, as I think hiking in neutral shoes over the past many years has severely busted my knees. I had no idea that was the problem until now.

Try the GT series from ASICS. I've used both GT and Kayano. You can also check out Saucony.

Are you sure your knee pain is because you used neutral shoes? It could be that you just pushed yourself.

I overpronate and these are the shoes I have used in the past.
1. Asics Gel Kayano - 22 and 25. These are simply the best. Lots of cushioning and stability needed to neutralize the pronation. Got them abroad for much cheaper rates than in India.
2. Saucony Omni 16 - These are also good stability shoes with lesser cushioning, thereby faster. But didn't last for more than 600 kms.
3. Nike Lunarglide - I used them before 4 years and were quite good at that time. But now, the Air Zoom Structure series are for overpronation. Not used them though.

Apart from these, Mizuno Wave Inspire also has good reviews. But finding these shoes at a budget is a long and slow process. You need to wait for year end deals or festive sales and grab it once there is a good deal.

Apart from this, do you land heel first or toe/midfoot first while running? If heel, I would request you to slowly start training to land on toe first. But doing this, you can slowly neutral out your overpronation and reduce knee pains in the long run.

After watching my video at the store, and doing lots of reading online it does feel that my overpronation has been the primary cause of my chronic knee pain. Unbelievable! I have blown so much time not knowing this was the issue.

Saucony doesn't seem available online or in stores? I see a Saucony Pune facebook page which says new shoes coming in Jan 2021. https://www.facebook.com/sauconyindia/

I plan to head back to the store and try the GT series on my feet. I dont plan to run anymore, so am hoping this lower end 2000 series might be okay. Price difference bought at mrp doesn't seem anything...GT is 11k and the Kayano is 13k.

Thank you so much for your detailed response. Really appreciate your time.

Yes, the kayano seems best for massive overpronation and its available to try and buy at a physical store.

Where do i find the Saucony and the Mizano? Am wary about buying online unless its from the brand store. Just look at the fake websites for shoe brands here:

https://www.asicssaleindia.co.in/men...ro-p-1001.html
https://www.newbalanceindiastore.in/

I land heel first and overpronate on the heel and then towards the inner edge of my feet and then the toe. Yes, for my walks now i will consciously avoid landing on my heel going forward.

I usually buy from brand store during end of season sale (my current pair of Asics DynaFlyte was from Asics store). Or from Amazon/Flipkart sales from Amazon Prime/Flipkart Assured sellers only, just in case I can return them if I feel that it is a fake. Recently, I got a Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 for 5.4k from Flipkart and seems authentic.
I bought my Saucony from Reliance footprint during a 50% off sale. I also found it to be available in ajio some months back. Mizuno was also available in Footprint some years back, maybe they are available in ajio/myntra as well.

This current COVID situation is a great challenge for us. There is scarcity of shoes and whatever available is quite costly as well. Praying for things to get back to normalcy in about 6 months, by when my current shoes will be due for a change .

During walking, it is quite difficult to avoid landing on the heel, buy yes you can try to cautiously avoid it. Initially, you will have pain in the calf muscles but with some good stretching, it should subside.

Saucony is available on Myntra. I've bought them twice from Myntra and once from Reliance. As mentioned by Kat, Saucony Omni is good for overpronation.

Regarding ASICS, try their online store. Also, instead of GT-2000, maybe look at GT-1000. They should be substantially cheaper. Also, instead of the latest Kayanos, try to find the older ones as they would be cheaper (25 or 26).

Re: The Running / Marathon Thread

I have overpronation and im using Asics, Adidas, Nike and Brooks. Nike s are the low end ones, with decent arch support, light weight and good for overall use. Adidas has good arch support but the sole is narrow, if you have wide feet, avoid this. Asics is a very sturdy shoe providing additional sturdiness compared to Nike, but is heavier.

Brooks beast is the heaviest , with most of the support much better than asics, but is quite heavy. IF your not over weight, general fitness is good, only pronation problem is the issue go with Nike . After using all this, i found the trick free of cost, wear a thick socks, run bare foot on the treadmill and your overpronation will reduce and strengthen your foot a lot.

+1 to Mizuno wave inspire. Great VFM. Small Japanese brand with top notch quality. There are few sizes available on Amazon.

Re: The Running / Marathon Thread

Brought these recently - using them for longer intervals and tempo runs - feels very good.

The Running / Marathon Thread-17ecfa16f5a542c69cd7985825286075.jpeg

Have used shoes from most brands, but personally I like Adidas adios , Takumi series, Nike freerun, mizuno wave, vibrant 5 fingers and this Hoka rincon.

Shoes that didn’t suit my kind of running were brooks pure cadence, saucony kinvera and Asics kayano

Kayano 25 is available in asics store now in multiple sizes. With additional 15% off, it seems VFM now.

Mi10, where did you buy these? Always wanted to buy hoka, but never found it online or in offline stores near my place.

Sadly my sizes are not available. These are fantastic shoes by the looks of it and i will definitely be adding one to my collection so i can start rotating my shoes. Their pricing is also phenomenally fabulous.
