No, Fastag is only an electronic payment instrument for tolls. Why would traffic cops stop and fine you if your car does not have a Fastag ? If your car enters a toll without a Fastag, then you need to pay double the toll, that's all.

Hi - I had also read articles similar to one posted by Shamanth, in the above reply but had missed the part about Insurance Renewals. This car is in Goa which does not have any Fast tag tolls, so I am not sure about local cops fining. But the insurance renewal bit kind of throws me off. In that case I may end up buying a new Fast tag.

Thanks for the help.

Despite making it mandatory (makes sense for every car that will enter a tolled road), adoption was an issue so the government has come up with this trick - with insurance renewal linked to Fastag, they've gone the whole 9 yards.

This will make our traffic cops super happy - apart from helmets for 2 wheelers, now for 4 wheelers they will have seatbelts, masks, Fastags too as easy pickings, last year's low collection will be easily compensated.

*I'm not against cops fining motorists without helmets and those driving/seated in cars without seat belts!

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

With a tollRoad drive upcoming, had to finally get Fastag. Opted for HDFC (a/c with them) & the process was quick. Was 100(Joining) + 200 (Deposit) + Initial loading (200) = 500.

Different providers seem to charge different amounts as Deposit and loading, which is odd. Also the whole deposit & minBalance thing seems to be a scam to hold hundreds of crores of public money without interest. Eg. current 2Crore fastag users means Rs400crores as Security deposit and Rs400 crores as minimum balance.

When they have already charged Rs100 for the card, what exactly is the security deposit for ? And why should there be an unusable min balance in the card? It ain't some bank account.

Valid question. However, it seems that the minimum balance requirement has been scrapped by NHAI recently.

Got an SMS & email saying "Your FasTag has been issued successfully. Your Customer Id is 1900040xxxxx and Wallet Id is 19000010xxxxxx. Please visit https://fastag.hdfcbank.com/RetailRoadUserLogin/Index if you are retail user".
I assume this means my tag is activated & ready for use ?

Another msg says "Your FasTag has been Successfully Recharged for Rs.300 on 2/17/2021 6:58:31 PM. Our reference Number for the transaction is 30000000006655308. Balance amount in the Account is Rs. 300"
On application they had said SecDeposit-200 and InitialLoading-200. So not sure where this 300 came from ?

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

I would like to share my pathetic service experience with Airtel Fastag.

I got my Fastag on 2019 and due to Covid I did not have any outstation travel. So, 2020 went like that, this Jan 31st I had to travel to Bangalore, since my Airtel wallet has 750rs I thought I will recharge it later. My first toll was at Madurai and toll gate opened and immediately I got a message saying my fastag is deactivated due to insufficient fund. I called up customer care and I could not get in touch with any Airtel Payment customer care because it was a Sunday. Finished my travel by paying cash.

Next day spoke to Airtel Payment customer care, they are saying because I did not use the account for a limited period of time, account is in dormant status. Well, I did not get any notification or warning regarding this. I told them I have 750rs in the wallet and to activate the account. They are saying because I entered the toll and fastag is black listed due to non-payment.

I visited Airtel showroom two times and they are unable to convert my wallet to Airtel savings account because of this pending payment. Why is it so hard? I do have money in the wallet, why can’t they just release the payment and activate my fastag and wallet?

From here it gets ridiculous, they don’t have any option but to deactivate my fastag. This card can’t be activated. I am really frustrated at this point and told them to deactivate it and I will take another tag. Craziness does not end there, to deactivate, they want me to cut fastag into two pieces, take picture and send it to them in email. Are you kidding? Fastag is sticked in the car. Now I had to somehow pull it out, made scratches in the glass and cut it in two pieces and send them an email.

They have acknowledged the mail and said they will resolve the issue in 24 working hours and it been more than 10 days. I tried taking another tag but since one tag is already issued in my cars number, it was not possible to take another one. This Airtel has to deactivate my tag first.

So far no contact from anyone and my tag and wallet is still in dormant state. I filed a complaint in consumer forum and for that also they have provided an acknowledgement mail and no contact after that. I am done talking to them. Today I escalated this issue with first ticket number to consumer forum and waiting for their reply. I spoke to my friend who is a lawyer and he said I can file a case against Airtel and ask for compensation. I will wait till Saturday and if this does not get resolved by then, Monday I am going to my friend’s law firm and filing a case against Airtel.

People who have not taken fastag, don’t even think about taking Airtel fastag, because if you need help with anything, they don’t do a damn thing.

Pending Payment

Wallet which has 750 rupees

It is not about the money, it is about the inconvenience they are causing.
Fastag is mandatory now, every toll I pass I have to pay double and who's fault is it?

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

Apparently there have been quite a few instances, where commuters, despite having valid FASTag with sufficient balance, were forced to pay double toll because the fastag could not be scanned properly.

Got this on WA.
As per this Govt notification from 2018, in such instances, the commuter has a legal right to continue his journey without paying toll.

Re: FASTag: All you need to know about procuring & using it!

Dear All,

My car that has a Fastag is now being used by my brother and the vehicle ownership has also been transferred to his name. Should I deactivate the existing Fastag so that he can get a new one or can he continue using the existing Fastag on the vehicle?

Regards,
Dhananjay

I don't know which service provider you are using. In Paytm FASTag there is an option - "Link with another wallet". You can transfer to your brother's/ buyer's account easily.

I’m using the Karur Vysya Bank Fastag that I had gotten from Hyundai ASS about 1.5 years ago. Will check with them once.

You need to change the fastag by deactivating it, If you are selling it to unknown parties, to avoid the risk of their illegal activities and police tracking you.(since tag is in your name)

But because it is your brother who is using the car, you can leave it as it is. And give the username and password to your brother to recharge the fastag.

Technically, the system has no distinction. In fact, there are many instances where another car in front you will be allowed to pass through the toll and amount from your fastag will be deducted.

Thank you so much. Yes he currently is using the credentials to recharge the Fastag and his mobile is also updated in the Fastag system.
