The longest drive I've done is from Redwood Shores, CA to Crater Lake, OR and back with a group of friends, did most of the driving myself as I had not done long drives before. That was a total of 1100 miles(1800 km) over 3 days.Of that I would have driven at least 1300 miles. That was a lot of fun!

The longest drive in India was from Bangalore to Madurai in Dec 2009 (430km). That took about 5 hours and 45 min , on the way to Rameswaram.

I have also done a Bangalore to Trichur trip to my hometown on Aug 14,2008 . That was about a 400km drive morn-evening which took about 8.5 hours.

My longest drive was in 2007, when I drove from Kochi. Route was: Kochi> Mangalore> Goa> Mumbai> Ahemdabad> New Delhi> Jammu and back. On the return trip, Mumbai to Kochi was done via Bangalore. Car was Fiat Uno and total 10 days were spent in the car in the complete trip.

Apart from these a few Kochi-Bangalore, Kochi-Chennai, Kochi-Trivandrum trips over a period of time in Uno/Linea. No wonder, i carry such a huge Fiat logo in my avatar

My favourite driving destinations from Mumbai:
1.Overnight-Goa- 500kms- 10-12 hrs
2.1 day - Jaipur (approx. 1000kms)- 17 hours, Nagpur - 20 hours plus (900kms plus)
3.Longest at a stretch- 32 hours- Pathankot (2 of us driving alternately) & return same way- approx. 1900kms each way.
4. Chennai- approx. 1200kms- 21hours.
5.Best fun trips - ( same day return):
- Silvassa/ Daman
-Pune
-Alibaug
-Nagothane
-Ganpatipule
-Mahabaleswar
-Satara
-Hubli

On a lighter note - not so desirable same day return trip-
home to office - everyday- generally this I feel is the most tiring trip.

Yes,the car gets seriously affected by crosswinds above 100kmph.Its very hard to keep her in a straight line.Ditto for the Santro. The steering becomes very light, goes all over the place!

But I remember doing a steady 110-120 on the M800 all throughout the Durgapur Expressway(some 80 odd km)

Haldwani to Bhopal 1000+ kms (via Aligarh-Mathura-agra ).
Started at 5:00 AM in the morning from Haldwani. Lost 3 hours in a massive sand storm between Agra and Gwalior. Reached home at 12 in the night.

In India my paranoid folks wont let me hit the highways, so longest solo drive has been Mumbai-Pune... boring, I know.

But last year I took off on a road-trip in Scotland, starting in Glasgow, to Fort-William, to Portree in Skye, then to Pitlochry and finally to Edinburgh. Total distance travelled in 5 days was just over 1000km, although the longest single day's drive was less than 350km.

Easily the most beautiful drive I've ever been on. The roads are great fun and the countryside can take your breath away. Only spoiler was the noisy engine... since it was Easter weekend and everything had been booked all I could get was a Peugeot 308, and it was a diesel :(

Trip of a lifetime!

Thanks Reisender for reviving this long lost thread. I saw it ages ago and had nothing noteworthy to report and then promptly forgot about it.

My (our) longest drive was the AP to AP drive. 7234 km in a Skoda Laura. (AP to AP: In search of a white X-mas and found a street party!) There were 3 of us sharing the driving over 16 days. The longest non-stop stretch we did was Shillong to Bhubaneshwar (some 1600 km) in 34 hrs. through narrow (often bad) mountain roads, thick fog etc.

The max speed recorded by the GPS was 183 kmph (the speedo showed some 195 at that point).

Cheers,
