Thw 2009 Bloxham Steam rally held in the UK in which long forgotten and gone names as Foden,AEC and ERF buses and coaches appeared. A steam powered truck is shown here. (picture source Quality First, Oxford UK (the Morris Cowley Oxford and Issis Owners Club)

Further to my post today managed to take some pictures. Well almost every thing has been changed. Strange thing the Engine block says TATA.

The gear box and the other parts of running gear proudly have the 3 pointed star and TMB written over them

The radiator top and bottom are original with the center portion remade. Bottom still has the hole for crank handle.

Its not a 1210D but TATA Mercedes 312.

This is indeed a 1210D and not a 1210SE.

@ SirAlec,
Thanks for correcting me but that truck is having 1210D badges on its bonnet near to the cabin end.
How to recognize whether its TMB 1210D, 1210SE or 312 ?

Although a TMB 312, the truck seems to have a number of Tata parts that must have replaced the original. Even the engine block (or is it something else in the second last pic?) has thick TATA monogram suggesting that it isn't original. The T on the bonnet too is not original since TMB trucks carried the three-pointed star.

1210D was introduced while the collaboration with Daimler Benz was still intact i.e. before 1969. 1210 D had long bonnet like that of the truck whose pics you've posted. 1210 SE had shorter bonnet. It was originally known as 1210S and was introduced in mid-seventies.

@ directinjection

You are absolutely right

I was referring to the images that is on the previous page. Yeah the 4x4 one is pretty much worked upon. Even the instrument cluster, starter etc are all wrong.

You are right, I have also pointed out the same glitches. Few things that ain't broke are TMB on that truck . Of that pictures are there.

A small correction. The model introduced during the collaboration was 1210. It was introduced in 1964. 1210 D was the model with direct injection engine and was introduced shortly after the collaboration expired.

Nice 'auto' (as we call them down south)

BTW, I was told these came with kick-pedal start, rather than the hand-pulled lever to start? Is it true?

That is true. I have seen many of the Lamby Autos start their steeds in this manner.

Yes and all the subsequent models from API also had the same kick starter. Upon looking for pictures for the same on net I came across this site which have history of these three wheelers, more importantly they have a section on Indian version too. here is the link

Lambretta Lambro

Actually it was TATA Benz 312, it still carried the Mercedes logo. Difference between 312 and 1210, 1210D was that the later had split windscreen.

BTW it was mercedes 6 cylinder direct injection from beginning. There was never a model with a heater. Thats why it was so successful, especially in hills and with military.
