re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

A collection of really lovely old pics. of Madras I found in a facebook album.

Ironically though, despite looking hard there were very few I could find with Standards in them!

The Mayflower was said to have belonged to Indu Chandok of the MMSC (Madras Motor Sports Club), if I'm not mistaken his grandson is the rally driver Karun Chandok.

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Nice pics Shyam, this reminds me of a song "madrasa suthi paaka poren" from Uzyavan movie. I always had a complaint that I couldn't see old photographs of motorcycles/scooters plying on road to a little extent these pictures did that job. I love that penant I guess it slowed down or stopped as I could see the red lamp glowing with this I can imagine how the condition of the car would have been then. How I wish I was born then, I would have picked up nice Dodge Kings way/Ford jeep/Twin Triump/BSA M20/Norton ES2 and ripped the road.

Glad you liked them too Bala. Your mention of 'Madras' incidentally makes me wish that the city was still named thus (as I often do wish whenever someone mentions the name!) With the renaming as 'Chennai' all the 'good' things from the old days seems to have disappeared from it slowly but steadily!

And yes, same here- I too wish I had lived then!

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Here is a lovely period picture from Goa, showing what is probably a Chevy or some other American tourer.

Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars-5917008197_e43bf2418f_b.jpg

Gama Pinto Car, Mapusa, Goa (Old Photograph) | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

The text reads

Quote:
A vintage picture of a car belonging to the Gama Pinto family of Anjuna along with the family members, attired in the prevailing popular fashion of the day... the period hats (including the Hindu gentlemen with his own black cap). The car is parked in front of a premier photo studio - Reis da Costa - way back more than a century ago in Mapusa, Goa. The rare black and white photograph blends two distinct aspects of Bardez; while the Gama Pinto household was prominent in Anjuna and the first one to possess a car in the village, every other newly wed couple posed proudly for their memorable wedding photograph, in the entire Bardez taluka in Goa, probably at Reis da Costa (Artista, Fotografo Premiado), in Mapusa town at that time. The coastal village of Anjuna and its beautiful beaches, of course, form the haunt of every world traveler today. The rare, beautiful picture was certainly captured by the lensman of "Reis da Costa". Pic courtesy: The Olencio Gama Pinto Family, Anjuna.

A superb set showing images of the British Raj, many images showing cars travelling long distance, including many in the NWFP and Shimla.

British Raj - a set on Flickr

There are many images, here are just a few. We see English, Indian and Pakistani registrations.

Very nice Karl. The snap of the Morris with the trailer made me ask if any one has a vintage car trailer(not jeep) in their collection?

Cheers

More likely it's a Vauxhall Cadet (of the early 30s).

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

A tbhpian has been teasing us with a similar car. This picture has been taken in Bombay, only not clear about the location. It may be along DN Road, or MG Road. Let us have some suggestions. It is raining, umbrellas are out, hence the background is not clear.
BTW, that car in the Stude thread is destined to come to Mumbai

Cheers harit

The location maybe from a tram, travelling towards DN Road, on the left should be VT station, the building ahead could be Capitol Cinema, and the corner building on the right is before the Municipal headquarters. This is still only an educated guess.

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Another picture of the Gateway Of India, this monument has been photographed many many times, and many of these times included vehicles in the picture. So I keep them.
The car in the background is a Chrysler product, Rehaan's grandfather had a similar light blue car.

Cheers harit

Hey, this pic shows a Mercedes Ponton 190 (chrome trim on the waistline), probably an early second series from late '56 early '57 since it has the larger tail lamps but also the separate trunk mounted licence plate holder with the chrome bar on the top.

I think that's a Stude Champion Conestoga from 1955 (station wagon). Must be really rare now a days.

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Today I located two photos of my family and myself.
Family photo is at Alibaugh, although at that time we had two cars, one had gone for repairs and our hotel booking was done at Alibaug.
We took our Maruti 800 and hired this contessa from Hertz car rentals. They used to give away cars on rent and drive yourself basis.
Second photo of myself in my Gypsy 1986 model.
I am trying to locate one more photo of this gypsy.I shall post the same when I find that.

3r48o55........gtfgffffffffff Poffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

Contessa looks amazing, Iqbal sahab when was this picture taken and I mean which year, great that we had Hertz self driven car rentals, by the by do we have them now also?. Contessa I believe it is the cadillac of new generation cars of 80's. Even today when I see one it grabs my attention, I guess it is also a collectible and can be a daily runner as well.

Yes Boss, the contessa was a bomb in those days with powerful engine of its time.
Hertz used to give away the cars with full tank of petrol , you have to use the car and fill up the tank again and pay the rentals, which were very economical.
But as usual our Indian mentality, people started taking advantage of their faith and misused the cars,Finally they closed the shop.
In mumbai they were situated at Hotel Horizon Juhu.
The photos were taken between 1990 and 1992.Rubb Rakha.........
