Nostalgic Madras

Here is a nostalgic Madras picture (Egmore). This seems to have been one of the first electric, automatic traffic lights installed in S.India per Hindu. Picture is dated September 1953.

We had a very similar Chevrolet Styleline, 1950 (KLT-501, sold in Chennai mid to late 1980's).

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

The FIAT was parked in Begumpet, but now has been moved to Kondapur, presently inherited by my mom's cousin Nigel Yar Khan...its been a while since it last participated in an event. I've clearer pics of the car which i'll soon post.

Any guesses about the type of Fiat in the B&W photo. FYI! Its parked in a an old mansion called Manaaq-e-Osman, which housed the Sultan-ul-uloom school later (now United Avenue) near Bugumpet flyover. This was on the other side of the road, opposite country club. Cheers!

I thought any 1939 Buick with a sunroof was unusual. Mine is a Limo, 7-seater. I am the second owner in the book apart from some transfers within family of first owner.

The sedan Fiat is a 1926/1927 model, would have also been a 4 cylinder car, probably a 507.

Thanks for the identification. So it seems many photos are from Chennai where I have a certain fan-following

This is a bus, must be from the Royal Institute of Science, at Kala Ghoda. The word Royal has been dropped from the name after the British left India.
And the scooter side view.

Cheers harit

I too have heard that this makes the car rare. A sunroof in those years would be very unusual

Kasli...I think both cars are Fiats...probably the same car with the rims changed adn teh grille guard attached.

The Oakland you saw in Hyderabad was a superb 1919 model that unfortunately fell in the wrong hands..car was opened up for restoration and keep mooving from place to place and most of its parts were lost.

I had is nose piece with me for a long time. It had curiously angled quarter eliptical leaf springs at all four ends.

No, the two fiats are not the same...I am told the old one was sold in the twenties and the present 514 Tourer was acquired in the 1930s...

Some more pics are here...

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Dear Harit

The pictures in #1864 are both from Madras

The first one is of Moore Market which was a great place to pick up old
comics, second hand books, toys and antiques during the 60s and 70s. It was
built by the British and burned down in 1986 (deliberately or accidently
no one knows) and now in its place your have the Railway Booking
complex. Moore Market was a great place to visit during Christmas Eve
to buy chinese paper lanterns.

The other picture is the Souther Railway Head quarters and it is
adjacent to the Madras Central Station.
