Maruti’s new mid-size SUV to replace S-Cross in India

Maruti's mid-size SUV will be unveiled later this month. Prices could be announced in August.

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch a new mid-size SUV in the Indian market. It will be replacing the S-Cross in the brand’s model line-up.

Maruti’s mid-size SUV shares its underpinnings with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The car will be unveiled later this month.

Maruti’s version of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder will also be offered with two engine options, including a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol and a 1.5-litre strong-hybrid. The latter uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 91 BHP and 122 Nm and an electric motor with an output of 78 BHP and 141 Nm.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross was introduced in 2015. Back then, the 1.6-litre diesel quickly became the engine of choice for enthusiasts. In 2017, the car received an update and the 1.6-litre engine was discontinued. At present, the S-Cross is offered with a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine.

Toyota, Suzuki mid-size SUV production to begin in August

Toyota’s version of the Creta-rivalling SUV will be unveiled on July 1, 2022.

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota have confirmed that the production of the new mid-size SUVs will begin in August. The SUVs will be manufactured at Toyota’s Bidadi plant in Karnataka.

The official statement reveals that the new models will be equipped with mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid powertrains developed by Suzuki and Toyota, respectively.

Toyota’s version of the Creta-rivalling SUV will be unveiled on July 1, 2022. It is expected to be called the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Rumours suggest that Maruti Suzuki’s version could be called Vitara. Both SUVs are believed to be based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform.

The two companies have also announced that the new models will be exported to markets outside India, including Africa.

Toyota has dropped the first teaser image of its upcoming “self-charging hybrid electric SUV”, which is likely to be called the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. It will be unveiled on July 1, 2022.

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is rumoured to be based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform and will compete with the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

The teaser image gives us a glimpse of the SUV’s front fascia. It consists of a split headlamp setup with sleek LED daytime running lights at the top with the main headlamp cluster positioned on the front bumper. The SUV also has stylish dual-tone alloy wheels.

Reports suggest that the Urban Cruiser Hyryder could be offered with Suzuki’s K15C Dual-Jet petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech. There will also be a strong hybrid version on offer.

Maruti's Creta rivalling SUV to be revealed in July 2022

The Maruti Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder are likely to go on sale in India around the festive season.

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki will reveal its new mid-size SUV next month. It will share its underpinnings with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which is set to debut on July 1, 2022.

Maruti’s Creta-rivalling SUV is rumoured to be called the Vitara. It could also likely be exported to international markets.

The Vitara is said to be based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform. It is the same architecture that underpins the S-Cross and the Vitara Brezza.

Maruti Suzuki's Creta-rivalling mid-size SUV could be called Vitara.

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota have lined up new mid-size SUVs to take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Now, new details have emerged that contradict earlier reports.

According to reports, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki's upcoming SUV will not be based on Toyota's TNGA-B platform. Instead, the SUV will use Suzuki's Global-C architecture, which underpins models like the current Vitara Brezza, Ciaz, S-Cross and the 4th-gen Vitara mid-size SUV sold in the international market.

Both SUVs are likely to be powered by Suzuki's K15C Dual-Jet petrol engine that debuted in the Ertiga and XL6. They will also get a strong hybrid powertrain option. It is said that Suzuki has integrated Toyota's hybrid tech with its K-series engine.

Rumours also suggest that Maruti's version of the mid-size SUV could be called Vitara in India.

Suzuki Italy teases a new car; is it the 2022 S-Cross?

If this is indeed the S-Cross, then it would be its third-generation model.

Suzuki Italy has released a teaser image on social media, leading to speculations that it could be the 2022 S-Cross.

The teaser image shows the car's LED headlamp cluster. Its design reminds us of the headlamps on the Ertiga. The car appears to have a more angular design with a clamshell bonnet.

If this is indeed the S-Cross, then it would be its third-generation model. The current model has been around since 2013. It received its first major update in 2017.

In India, the S-Cross is offered with a 1.5-litre K15B mild-hybrid petrol engine that produces 103 BHP and 138 Nm. The engine is mated with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Japan: Next-gen Suzuki Alto, WagonR, Vitara launch dates out

According to a Japanese media report, Suzuki could introduce the next generation Alto, WagonR and Vitara by December 2021.

The first model that is believed to be lined up for launch is the new Alto. The ninth-generation of the hatchback is reportedly scheduled to be unveiled in December 2020. It could retain its lightweight platform and might be offered with a new R06D type engine. This is a 658cc unit that develops 48 BHP.

A sportier version of the Alto, dubbed the Alto Works, is also said to be in the offing and is scheduled to debut in October 2021. The car could be powered by a turbocharged R06D type engine with a different bore and longer stroke. Such a design is said to improve mid-range torque and fuel efficiency.

The report also states that Suzuki could introduce the new WagonR in December 2021. The current model has been around since February 2017. In December 2019, it received the R06D type engine.

Coming to SUVs, the new Suzuki Vitara (also known as the Escudo) is being readied for a January 2021 launch. It will be based on the same monocoque chassis and will be manufactured in Hungary.

The SUV will be powered by a 1.4-litre, turbocharged engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system. It will also get a 1.0-litre, turbocharged 3-cylinder engine option.

Finally, there are reports of a 5-door version of the Jimny that could go on sale in India in December. Suzuki is unlikely to offer it in the Japanese market.

Rumour: 7-Seater Maruti SUV could debut in FY2020-21

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki could launch a 7-seater SUV sometime in the next fiscal. The car could get Vitara branding.

The styling of the 7-seater Vitara could be based on the 5-seater version that in global markets. On the inside, it is likely to get three rows of seats. The car could be powered by BS6 compliant engines.

2019 Suzuki Vitara spotted in India

The 2019 Suzuki Vitara was unveiled in August 2018. The SUV has now been spied testing in India. 

The new Vitara features wraparound headlamps with projectors and a dual-tone front bumper with chrome inserts. It has circular fog lamps and vertical LED daytime running lights. At the rear, the SUV has chunky wraparound tail lights and a dual-tone bumper with a pair of reflectors. It has a silver insert with the reversing light in the centre. The test car, which sported black paint and no badges, had ORVMs with integrated turn-indicators, roof rails and dual-tone alloy wheels. On the inside, the new Vitara gets black interiors with grey trim and circular air-conditioner vents. The test car had a screen mounted on the centre console.

In the international market, the new Vitara is available with 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre BoosterJet turbo petrol engines. It also comes with all-wheel drive.

In India, the Vitara might compete the Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster.

Rumour: Maruti Suzuki's Creta-rivalling SUV coming in 2020

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki is evaluating a new mid-size SUV for the Indian market. It will be positioned above the Vitara Brezza and could compete with the Hyundai Creta. The new model could be launched around mid-2020.

The new SUV is expected to share its underpinnings with the next-gen Vitara. It is expected to be around 4.3 meters in length and is likely to feature boxy styling with an upright stance. It is still unclear if Maruti would offer a 7-seater version, but it is expected to get all the latest creature comforts and safety features.
