Wow, so many new things to learn on TBHP

Thanks a lot theMAG, My bad however I do not know where this place is? I am having the suspension overhauled at 65k service. Any estimates on how much an entire suspension change would cost?

Thanks,
Anshu

1. Go to Basha Wheel Alignment - near Thom's Bakery. Meet with the gentlemen called Aman Basha (9342828093 - dont know if its obsolete)- and he'll have your front left suspension removed and centered to take care of the problem. No references needed.

OR

2. Replace that front left suspension with a new piece from Maruti.

I had a similar problem of uneven wear on both my left tyres- they were wearing out only on the outside while the right-side tyres were fine. Maruti did a thorough (as much as their capabilities allowed) checkup of the suspension and couldnt find the reason. Nor did regular wheel alignment centers.

This took care of the issue permanently. Vasu of SAG put me onto Aman Basha.

@mag: you mean Maruti couldnt figure out the incorrect camber reading? Or didnt even bother to check?

Yeah, 185/70 R14 should be the right upsize for VDi. We too would go for the same on the next change. Heard good things about michelin.

They hauled it up on a rig, checked the suspension for signs of any visual damage and concluded nothing was wrong. They complemented that with a voluntary (voluntary because I hadnt told them to do it) wheel alignment that was so horrendous that after I collected it, with a blood pressure of probably 400/300, I drove the Swift straight into my regular specialized wheel alignment center and got it realigned to normalcy.

@anshurao - my bad! I presumed you were based out of Bangalore until I saw your location now! Suffice to say, that place I mentioned is in Bangalore and not Goa.

For such issues first thing to do is to take a reading of the wheel alignment, with a proper machine, which records all these angles instead of visually ogling at the bottom!

I agree. As to the bottom ogling behavior, ajmat must have driven close to the place a few minutes before that and left behind some aura.

2 Questions

Jaggu, first of all, Congrats for having such a beautiful thread on swift VDi. This is one single thread which helped me knowing everything required to be done for my swift VDi.

I have 2 questions.

1. If I switch on the A/C, irrespective of the blower speed, will the fuel consumed be the same. I mean to ask is the the same fuel which will be used on blower speed 1, 2, 3 & 4 with A/C or will fuel consumption go up with each blower speed, best FE with speed 1?

2. I usually switch on the A/C at speed 1. Being really chilling at night, I used to switch off A/C after 5-10 mins and run with blower alone till the cooling is over and used to switch on again for 5-10 mins though out the drive. My friend told me that this process might damage the condenser. Is that true? He also said its better to have the A/C cooling level set to low levels [the nobe which will change A/C to heater] and then have the A/C on for the entire trip.

Is that correct?

1) Theoretically yes, but effects may vary depending on ambient temperature.

2) NO and NO.

1) Diesel swift, ac compressor runs through out irrespective of blower levels, so it doesnt matter. In Petrol thermostat cuts off when cooling is achieved so, higher blower speed = more usage of AC compressor during high ambient temperature.

2) Nope, i also do the same, as in switch comp ON and Off. Worst case scenario it will screw up the compressor not the condenser But seriously, no nothing should happen.

Reg the temp control, well you can do that, but the ac compressor will be running and heater also will be working, in short you are wasting energy. So i still prefer 1.

Yes its the steering damper that is making the sound.

Sorry jaggu for the late reply. The breakup is as follows...

Engine oil (they said shell but I now doubt this is servo only) 553.00 Rs

Oil Filter 376.00 Rs

Oil drain Plug assembly 64.00Rs

Grease Sachet 26.08Rs

Cabin Air Filter 1000.00

Labour Charges 1158.00

Total 3177.00 Rs

Another thing I noticed yesterday is that the car is emitting black smoke even when idling. What could be the reason? I filled normal diesel from my regular IOC pump(Civil Supplies).Or is it due to overfilling of engine oil?
Cheers

Overfilling engine oil gives out white smoke which is a bigger problem. Black smoke is due to soot formation in the exhaust which can be removed by italian tuneup :-).

Why would the Oil Drain Plug have to be changed ?

Oil drain plug is generally made out of softer steel than the engine oil sump hence there is a wear and tear of drain plug threads and is advisable to change it after 5 oil changes.

Dilip: Check the air filter and clen it if required. Ideally it shouldn't give visible smoke at idle though a small whiff of black soot might happen at cranking. Heat the engine and drive high rpm in low gears for few minutes and see if it helps, that's Italian tune up diesel fan suggested.

Condor: the drain nut and washer cones as one piece, so have to replace it when changing oil, since the washers and bolt gets crushed.
