Re: The Bicycles thread

Hi,

This is Vasanth from Chennai.
I have a 2018 Canondale Quick 5. Earlier I used to service my bike from Cyclo Cafe, Kotturpuram.

Can anyone suggest a good mechanic for servicing the bike in and around Adyar in Chennai??

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Re: The Bicycles thread

Finally gathered the courage to pedal out of the apartment and probably did about 10 kms around the vicinity.

Bloody hell this bike seems far more photogenic than the motorcycle lol! Or is it the colour!

I got my road bike serviced by Velo Doctor (velodoctor.in). They do servicing at home - need a small space and a few hours to do the service. Quite happy with their work

Btw I thought Cyclo Cafe was a good setup (never used their services though) ? Any reasons for not going back to them?

They have closed down their bike shop attached to the Cafe. From one of their ex-employees heard that they were let go. Hence looking for one.

Thanks a lot for the reference.

Re: The Bicycles thread

There was a massive crash at Tour de France on Saturday and it took down a large part of the peloton. The reason? A fan stepped onto the road with a cardboard banner and was posing for TV cameras. A rider was knocked off balance and when he fell it caused a domino effect ending in a massive pileup bringing down half the peloton.
The police are still looking for the spectator who caused the crash.

Re: The Bicycles thread

Hero cycles enters the European market with the most 'in-the-trend' segment - Electric bicycles. As much as I would like them to be successful, the product lineup is pretty basic and not at all interesting for an electric bicycle buyer in Europe, except may be for the price. For eg. I can't get any new decently specced Electric bicycle in the Netherlands less than ~€1500, but most hero e-cycle line up falls well within this value. Let us wait and watch.

Quote:
Hero Cycles has just delivered its first batch of Indian-produced electric bicycles to Germany.

Now, the company expects the figures to grow.

Hero Cycles is a massive bicycle manufacturer owned by Hero Motors, the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world.

The Indian manufacturer’s electric bicycle division has now set its sights on Europe and the continent’s burgeoning electric bicycle market.

Currently dominated by many domestic electric bicycle companies, the European e-bike market represents one of the largest outside of China.

Hero hopes to become a new leader in the European market, competing with both domestic manufacturers and low-cost imported electric bicycles from China.

The plan may be ambitious, but Hero brings a number of advantages. Indian-made electric bicycles aren’t subject to the heavy tariffs levied against many Chinese electric bicycle companies. Hero also brings to the table its own massive manufacturing resources and expertise.

By 2025, Hero plans to add €300M in organic growth from its European operations and another €200M in inorganic growth, likely through the use of mergers and acquisitions.

Birth of an Electric Idea - Hero Lectro E-Cycles

By 2022, Hero aspires to have a 10% share of the global E-cycle market. Hero Lectro E-Cycles are designed and engineered in Berlin and manufactured in our automotive plants in Delhi NCR. Efficient supply chains from Sri Lanka and world-class partners like Yamaha also play a part in creating an E-Cycle of global standards.

So when an internal combustion engine was first mounted on a cycle we had the birth of the motorcycle.

The difference was pretty clear. External power versus pedal power.

Then briefly you had the mopeds. Though I doubt one actually ever pedalled them, except maybe to get off the line.

Now you have a category of electric motorcycles.

And now electric bicycles.

But how are the two of them any different anymore?

Size of the electric motor?

Electric bicycles are electric power assisted bicycles. The level of assistance varies per type. This is the most generalized concept, AFAIK. The effort to pedal is supported by an electric motor, which might be mounted either at front, rear or mid positions.

There has been a lot of varying regulations across the world and discussions concerning this categorization of what constitutes an electric bicycle. Atleast in EU, the classification is broadly based on the number of wheels, motor power, mass and seating capacity. Also there is a category of electric bicycles which are called speed pedelecs. These have higher capacity motors and with gearing it can easily drive at much higher speeds than a normal electric power assist bicycle. These pedelecs fall under mopeds with varying requirements mandated for helmet usage etc. General classification :

The white paper on current regulations can be found here

This article gives a good overview.

.
I think the bottom line is that the primary propulsion still is pedal power.

Versus e motorcycles where it's pure electric.

The bottomline of the idea itself is : Yes, predominantly pedal power. But there are also some models which can purely drive electric with a throttle for a short distance (depending on battery pack size). This is mostly popular among city bikers and esp. older people. You can compare these bikes to plug-in hybrid electric cars.

Hilarious memory. A recent one. I'm on my road bike. Riding to Chandani Chowk. A popular daal chawal ride of 30 km to and fro when you want a quickie without too much dirty city traffic, and pretty environs.

I take the left turn from the University circle, where starts the 8 km constant gradient climb to Chandani Chowk, with the famous 300 meter kicker at the end.

I see this family of one old uncle, two ladies, two girls and a pretty podgy guy on cycles who I pass and start powering up.

Suddenly after 200 meters, one by one they all pass me. The straw that broke the camel's back was when the old uncle too peacefully pedalled past me, smiling (I think it was the smile that did it)!

Totally frustrated! Till I realized later at the necklace point where all of them had stopped for photos that they were all on bikes which had the tell-tale black boxes on the downtube.

Cheers, Doc

Fitting or quality wise ? I will suggest to buy the one which is available in the market(if there is a shortage of other brands) and later iterate to a new one . Be on the cycle asap and start exploring the handling, gears, climbs and valleys. Try to prepare for the first 50km and then 100

Happy cycling

To be honest, I am not surprised.

For anyone with a slightly large-ish head (or anyone who does not have a small/normal head) the fit is pretty high up on the dorkometer.
