Re: The Windows 10 Thread!

I have registered for the insider builds post installation of Windows 10.

Cortana in Indian flavours will be available in India in a few weeks' time for Insiders and I definitely do not want to miss out.

Is there any word on what happens after the free first year upgrade ends?

Safe to say it is not going to be like WhatsApp!

Today I will be updating my Dell laptop. It was a smooth upgrade experience from W8.1 Pro to the insider builds. Now for the real RTM

Guys, KIS 2015 is incompatible with Windows 10. You must uninstall it before the upgrade or the setup program will disable it for you. Once upgraded to W10, uninstall the program and install KIS 2016 from here:

http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/

Currently the new 2016 versions are only available at their US site.

Are you referring to obtaining security updates from Windows Update for Win8.1?

If yes, check the PC clock and get it synched with an NTP server. More details here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/w...#1TC=windows-7

Once done, make sure you are online & in an Administrator command prompt run:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Once this finishes, reboot the PC and run the following in an admin prompt:

sfc /scannow
All these have been done. The clock was the first stage. The cbs.txt file is the outcome of the sfc command. I checked on MS Tech support. My post is now a separate thread, but nothing more. I just ran the DISM command - for error 0x800f0960 on NET 3.5 which could not be downloaded.

@R2D2; I also find I will have trouble with both NVidia and Kaspersky. The latter is configured with some holes to allow me to run the IIT VPN. At the moment my nt is on the 'choke'. Next week I will be in Gurgaon with our son with 20GB/8Mbps connection. I guess I should try and download and reinstall the Net Framework 3.5. Where can that be found? Of course another option (preferred) is to do a clean install of Win10 and then reinstall the software!

Net 3.5 does not need to be downloaded but you can in windows itself.

If you do not want to download,

1. insert you windows 8/8.1 dvd or mount.
2. run cmd as admin and paste this command as is:

Dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:L:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess

3. Hit Enter. In the above command, L is the drive letter for windows dvd or mount.

Or you can download from here:

These are both Net 3.5 files by the looks of it.

@Vasudeva; out posts crossed. I will try your fix(es).

sgiitk, the cbs errors you get are the result of 2 files:

a) amd64_prncacla.inf
b) CNBJ2530.DPB

IIRC these are Canon printer drivers. Frankly these shouldn't be a problem for the upgrade.

And from my experience trying to fix SFC and WinSxS component issues some of which cannot be resolved without reinstalling the OS, I would strongly recommend you create a Windows 10 ISO using this tool and upgrade:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Just make sure you select the correct architecture and version depending on the OS you currently have installed.

You will options to:

a) Do an in-place upgrade
b) Keep your data and wipe the OS
c) Wipe everything and start with a clean drive

In your case, since this is the 1st time you are upgrading, you MUST do an in-place upgrade. When the PC is upgraded and you reboot, it must be connected to the internet for activation. Once upgraded you can choose to do a clean reinstall at any time in the future.

Hi R2D2,

I see from my laptop the 'Get Windows 10' icon when clicked looks as attached. So, i believe that i'm ready for upgrade and i'll be doing the in-place upgrade. Please confirm.

Also, if I want to do a clean install later once this upgrade is done, how and from where should i be able to get the upgrade/setup file.

Thanks in advance.

Re: The Windows 10 Thread!

Thanks @R2D2. At the moment my net is on choke, so I will try from Gurgaon (8Mbps/20GB) next week. My own 2Mbps/7GB will be up only after the 12th. Then I will use the USB drive or DVD to do an in-situ upgrade.

Canon makes sense, I have a Canon Pixma 7200 which I use occasionally for colour printing. My main printer is a Samsung SCX-3400. But when I tried to trace the error I got a NET 3.5 related track. Maybe Canon uses the NET drivers!

Of course when I get the ISO then I try again. I can always go to my friendly dealer and ask him for a Win8.1 reinstall.

I did a check on the Serials using a couple of third party tools, I find the same nos from both the tools with Identical serials for the PC and the Windows. So this is how the preinstalled OS works!

In any case I am losing my NVIDIA and Kaspersky when I go to Win10. While the former is no great issue, the latter will be a bit painful since it was configured by Kaspersky net support to allow my IIT Kanpur VPN to work. Now I will have to disable the protection while I use the VPN (about 15 min a month!). If the Win10 update is stable then I may not be in a hurry for a clean install.

Great! Looks like you're all set to go. Just click on that "OK, let's continue" button and hope it goes off smoothly.

Get your ISO from the link here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Make sure you download the correct version based on whats currently installed on your PC.

It's worth mentioning here to you and all who upgrade to Win10, that the setup program may appear frozen/hanged for some minutes during a certain stage in the set up process. DO NOT shut off your PC as it may cause more complications. Give the setup program enough time to run and configure Windows.

OEM installations are done by the PC manufacturer by using a generic key to install the OS via the 'sysprep' toolkit. This 'image' is replicated across different machines of the same type/model. So yes, you may find the same key across machines. In case of Windows 8, the real key is stored in the BIOS and a COA (certificate of authenticity) pasted at the bottom of the laptop or on the PC cabinet. Windows 8 COA looks like a small sticker.

As mentioned in one of my earlier posts, you can download Kaspersky 2016 which is fully compatable with Win10 from the US site. If you wait a few days you may also get it on the Kaspersky India site. As for NVidia, well, you know where to get it from.

Good luck with the upgrade.

Re: The Windows 10 Thread!

So I upgraded to Windows 10 from Win 8.1. The upgrade went well and I start checking if my apps worked well after the upgrade. I click on my Cisco VPN client and it doesn't work so well. Well, let's look-up what the problem is with Edge> Strange, it sayss I am offline. Let's try Chrome. Oops, offline there too. Wow, my Wi-Fi doesn't show up. Let's attach the ethernet cable. Nothing. Zilch. The network is down, out and watered down like a hippo in Mysore zoo.

Turns out the Cisco VPN client not only does not work but knocks out your network. The official Microsoft advice is to rollback, uninstall Cisco client and then upgrade again. A few hours and Australian wickets later, Windows 10 is back minus the Cisco vpn client.

Re: The Windows 10 Thread!

Using Windows 10 since today morning and i am liking the small changes. One issue that i am facing is that touchscreen is not working on Google Chrome specifically and working elsewhere. What could be the issue? The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 3148 for the records.

Re: The Windows 10 Thread!

Good news for all Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 users.

Thanks to BHPian R2D2, I installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 from the US Site. Everything is working absolutely fine now.

The best thing was that it recognised my old licence and the remaining 302 days of the older licence was transferred.

I am reposting the link for benefit of all KIS users-

Re: The Windows 10 Thread!

@Leoshashi - Thanks. I too use KIS 2016. All security suites from Norton, Bitdefender etc carry over their subscription validity into a new install. Within limits of course as too many activations may be blocked.

Anyway, I just updated my Dell laptop a Ci7 machine with 8 GB RAM & SSD. Once again installation was a breeze. The setup program didnt balk at any point. I just had to install the relevant drivers luckily Win8 drivers work perfectly with W10 on this laptop.

Laptop boots up in 1.4 seconds from a cold start according to the Task Manager. Now how cool is that! This may be affected as I load additional programs.

When it comes to boot up times the laptop hits my desktop (Ci7 3970x) for a toss. The desktop which takes a whopping 16.7 seconds, courtesy the external sound card driver which has to initialise the peripheral during boot

Oh well, now all my home PCs are on W10 Pro. I am a happy camper so far.

Re: The Windows 10 Thread!

Struggling to install Asus Xonar D2X audio driver on PC. Windows 8.1 drivers are not working on 10, its saying platform is not supported. All resulting in generic audio, not able make my 5.1 setup work properly like how it used to work in 8.1.

Downloaded Nvidia 780ti driver from Nvidia website and it seems working fine.

Still waiting for win10 upgrade on Y50-70, Lenovo hasn't pushed it yet.
