Any advice?
LED TVs last 3 years without problems at best & by end of 6 years they become ready to be replaced. I don't know what is the solution other than replacing them every 5-6 years.

If there were CRT TVs still available, I would seriously think of buying one.

Re: The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.

I am currently using Panasonic 50” Plasma. I totally love it and in 11 years it hasn’t given me any issues but the brightness has reduced a little. I just love the colours of the plasma.
Now there is an itch to replace it. I am looking for something I can use for the next 10-12 years.

So I am looking to buy a 75”. I was wondering if I should go a OLED or just a LED is good enough. I checked both in a store and felt for my viewing, the premium on the OLED is not worth it. Any thoughts on this?

Now I am looking for suggestions for a 75” TV. Primary criteria is it should have amazing colours.

Apart from that I really do subscribe to Panasonic's hollywood professional tuned image as the colours seem exactly as they might at the cinema.
Which TV did you buy finally?

Re: The TV Thread - LCD, LED etc.

Hi all, am looking for a 55 inch TV. We are not an avid TV watching family and still use a 21" Sony Wega CRT that's been serving us beautifully for 17 years.

As I am absolutely unaware of any of the TV tech and having had no exposure in this department, I seek your help.

I went to a few stores and the most impressive were the OLED tech - they looked unbelievably brilliant! Some 4k versions also looked good.

My requirements:

1) Parents mostly watch news and occasionally, movies - through TV channels or Amazon Prime/Hotstar. So basic fool proof set of tech would be good.
2) We are a family of musicians so good audio is appreciated. Else an additional soundbar is also okay.
3) I'd definitely like a decent picture quality.
4) Good reliability

I haven't fixed a budget but since the use isn't extensive, I definitely am not looking for very high budgets ones.

I saw a couple of TCL models at the store for around 50k that looked decent. But most Sony/LG/Samsung ones are relatively very expensive. Also read in this thread about how the reliability cannot be really guaranteed. Would appreciate your guidance for this dear members. Thanks in advance.

I had bought a TCL full hd led 49 inch TV in Jan'17. It's still working fine without a single issue in it's 7th year. My usage also have been almost daily over this period.

  1. Get a good soundbar + Fire stick (or Apple TV*)
  2. Decent is subjective .. for News . Occasional movies almost any TV will work. Most TVs will use Hardware from LG/Samsung, so models will have similar Quality within a price range
  3. Get 5 year warranty for Reliability , there is not other Option. All brands use same hardware .. so reliability is a matter of luck

Apple TV : Nothing beats Apple TV for Music. For almost all Indian music, lossless audio is available. It costs around 100 Rs per month + cost of Apple TV. For most users, it does not matter. For you, it might since you might want to focus on instruments in isolation.

Couple of points from my side:
1. Check how news channels play on a 55” TV. I had bought a 65” TV once (returned after few days) and news channels were basically pixelated videos since most news channels were not in HD.

2. For all purposes, get a budget 55” TV with local dimming, IPS or VA panel and a soundbar.

3. Most Android TVs get terribly slow with time. Better to opt for a Fire TV Stick 4K max during sale (routine prices are high).

4. Recommended brands:

4.1 HiSense (service is average or below average),
4.2 VU (reliability reports are based on their HiSense TVs that they sold till 2020 before HiSense entered India, now they get TVs manufactured by Foxxcon but where do the supplies come from? Also their TVs dont have local dimming as per specs),
4.3OnePlus (most people give good reviews) or 4.4 Xiaomi: jack of all trades TV.

Some brands such as Motorola, Thomson, Kodak etc are merely labels and the TVs are manufactured by local Indian companies by licensing their brand name.

Query: How is Toshiba TV reliability?
I am also looking for a budget 65” TV. Can anyone share a few recommendations? I need local dimming, HDR support etc but shall be using Fire TV stick so 120Hz or 240Hz etc dont matter.

I bought a 50 inch TCL Google TV last week. TCL has launched some new models lately. With cashbacks and discounts, I got a pretty good deal. My usage is about 2 hours a day in evenings after work. Samsungs and Sonys were turning out to be very expensive. I am pretty happy with the picture quality and sound. Bought it with a 4 year warranty.

You can check VU GloLED series. It comes with 104 watt built=in sub-woofer. I was thinking of VU but they dont have retail stores. You can only buy online. Electronic items like TV's, I prefer check in person before buying.

Isn't this a potential problem with every OS whether its Android or not? Unfortunately no one seems to sell non-SMART TVs anymore.

Just use Set top box or Fire Stick and ignore smart functions in TV. Since cost of low end chipset is less than 20$ , it does not make any sense to make a TV without OS anymore. It will cost more to develop minimal functionality like input management without SOC.

I agree totally with this ‘sensible frugality’.

Our primary TV is an Samsung 42inch LCD TV purchased in 2007. We also use a fire tv stick in the HDMi Port and its been our Smart TV for ages now. Originally we used the Google Dongle whatefer it was called hut very quickly moved to Fire TV as soon as it got launched.

Our secondary TV is a ~2010 model Toshiba 32 inch HD LED TV and that also has become a Smart TV by virtue of the Fire TV stick.

But that can be done in an Android TV also, right?

I am planning to buy a budget TV in the range of 50-65k during Diwali sale.

Requirements:
1. Good picture quality that matches my current 43” Full HD VU Premium TV or that 65” 4K VU Premium TV (2020 model) that I had returned.
2. Local dimming and HDR support: giving good black levels for the given LED technology.

There are some options from Sony Bravia and LG in the 60-80k range as well and I am open to these also. No Samsung as most of my friends report issues with Samsung TVs within few years.

Had VU been selling the HiSense Ultra Premium 4K 65” TV, I would buy it eyes closed. There own TVs dont have local dimming anymore. Or if HiSense had better service reports, I would have got that.

Fire TV stick just needs one HDMI slot and a power outlet for plugging the adapter. You can use them with any non smart or smart TV. I am using two Fire TV sticks already. One at my home in a 50” non smart plasma TV and one in my 43” VU TV. I will eventually buy a Fire TV stick 4K max or the more expensive Fire TV cube during sale. My colleague also bought a Fire TV stick during the recent sale as he is totally impressed with it.
