Similar experience, but reasons are slightly different. I setup the iPad as a new one (did not try to restore from the old backup which was more than one year old). The problem was somehow I couldn’t remember what passcode I added in. And after restart, the first unlock has to be with the passcode and not fingerprint. After a few tries, it was clear that the only option is to do a factory reset. A quick search on Apple Support showed that I can connect the iPad to a laptop and turn on the recovery mode via iTunes. The problem was the same as you mentioned – USB-C on both ends. Luckily I had my old Samsung S10’s charger lying there and that had USB-A on one end which could connect to the old MacBook Air; with that I managed to reset and start back on the new iPad Air 4.

Otherwise, the device is brilliant. Really love the clean look with no home button, and though it doesn’t have the face recognition, the touch id implementation is really good.

So a bit of a troublesome start. I had not expected this at all. I have also ordered a new iPhone 12. My old iPhone is a bit of an oldie as well, but at least it is running on the latest OS as well. So hopefully that goes a bit smoother.
The restore from backup process is always smoother when both devices are on the same version of iOS. This is the sequence I do it in, in case it is helpful to you (with your soon to arrive iPhone 12) or to others on the forum:
  1. After unpacking your new iDevice, start it and go through the welcome screens without signing in to your iCloud/Apple ID/App Store account. Update the OS to the newest version available and, after letting it sit for a few hours, reset the device by going to General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. The device will now be back to a brand new configuration, just as it was out of the box, but with the latest version of iOS.
  2. Make sure that your old device is on the latest version of iOS.
  3. If the device in question is an iPhone then make a manual backup of your WhatsApp chat data by going to WhatsApp>Chats>Chat Backup>Back Up Now.
  4. If you use iCloud Backup then ensure that your device has been backed up sometime in the last 24 hours.
  5. Disable WiFi and mobile data on the device to be backed up, connect it to your Mac/PC and make a local backup via Finder/iTunes. Make sure that the Encrypt local backup option is selected so that your passwords, health data, and other sensitive information is also carried over on to the new device.
  6. Start your new device (insert your SIM card beforehand if it is an iPhone) and walk through the steps, when the option to restore from a backup comes up, select the Restore from Mac or PC option. Connect your new device to the Mac/PC and restore from the backup you took in the earlier step.
I prefer doing it the old school way, as opposed to using the WiFi based Automatic Setup or restoring from an iCloud Backup as I feel there are less things that are likely to go wrong. If the device to be replaced doesn't support the latest version of iOS then there are bound to be a few bumps in the road but if it does then the process should be seamless.

.
Thanks for your tips.
Yes I did do the update of the OS on the iPad before starting the installation. I do the back ups for this purpose always from my MacBook Pro rather than via iCloud.

It will be a few weeks before I get my iPhone 12. I expect it to go smoother as my old iPhone has the latest OS already. Fingers crossed though.

I guess the issues must have cropped up as your old iPad was stuck on iOS 12 and the new one was on iOS 14. Good luck with the iPhone!

On your iPhone Go to "Settings" then "Phone" then scroll down to "Calls on other devices". Disable the option.

Re: The iPad Thread

My kids Ipad Mini4 bought in August 2017 had developed a swollen battery. The screen has started coming out of frame on both longer edges. At first i thought the Ipad got bent but after few days was firm that it is battery swell issue even though the battery health was ok. I took it to Apple Service center, Reliance Resq. They said there are two options shown for this device first, they will give a similar Ipad for 29K Inr and second under battery issue will give a similar Ipad for 11K Inr. Since no point in spending 29K Inr for an old model , i was told they will check and give confirmation in few hours. In case i decide to not take replacement, they will not charge Inr 1100/- service fees. I got the call in evening was offered a similar IPad Mini4 for 11K Inr to which i agreed. I did ask whether it will be a new piece to which they confirmed with a yes saying it will be box packed ( and i was thinking how as Mini4 is discontinued long back) and will come with 3months warranty. I hope it is not a refurbished item. Does anyone has any experience in such scenario?

Anyone facing severe battery drain issues on iPad OS 14 and further updates? I have a 2017 9.7inch iPad and the battery has gone for a complete toss. I used to get 8-9 hours of stream time easy and now it's just about half. The only use of the iPad is to stream movies and watch videos on YouTube.

Re: The iPad Thread

I just got my new iPad Air 4 along with the magic keyboard. My experience with the last gen regular apple keyboard with the pro was not great. The keyboard has gone kaput twice after about 13 months or so. Hope the astronomically priced magic keyboard is hardy and lasts.

The set up was deliciously simple in true apple style. My old ipad pro simply got mirrored on the new iPad. After that the old one was factory reset and my wife is going to use it mostly to supervise my son’s use of it for school etc.

The iPad Mini 4 has been replaced by Apple post battery swell issue at a charge of approx Inr 11000. It looks brand new and Apple has given additional warranty of 90days.

What is the best offer for the iPad Air 4 at the moment? Online or offline. Any suggestions?

4000 rupees cashback on Reliance digital using HDFC card, but they don't have stock and you have to pre-book with delivery in around 10 days.

Re: The iPad Thread

Does anyone know if we can combine the education discount and hdfc discount? I had read somewhere we can do in physical store only.

Although I don't have a way to get student discount, I can at least find if someone can help with this.

Just spoke to imagine store, and they said it is not possible, apparently now with Apple India site live, student discount is directly being handled by Apple.
