Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Why are Android tablet makers hesitating from giving a usb host function? I think most of them dont have this functionality.

Google Navigation does not work in India. Either use Sygic or Brut Maps. Links on how to are posted few pages back.

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

Extremely happy to announce that I have semi-bricked mine.

Sitting late night, and then trying to upgrade with a tooth brush stuck in your mouth early in the morning is a sure fire way to brick your andro, right?

Now, it is saying it cannot mount /dev/stl0. I knew that it was in trouble when it finished reading the "update.zip" in couple of seconds.

Now, a basic questions:- the recovery menu says "upgrade from /sdcard/ (or something like that) / upgrade.zip".

Does this mean that if the file is named something else, it will not be read?

Re: Android Thread: Phones / Apps / Mods

A bunch of guys in my office have struck a deal with a dealer for Samsung Galaxy S2. Here is the offer:

SGS2 16GB Black with one year warranty and free screen protector for 26.9k.

My fellow Delhi/NCR Bhpians who would like to be a part of it may drop me a PM.

I tried bluetooth as my first option. However the two devices did not talk to each other even after entering PIN.
I will have to retry that option.

I have got all my contacts now in Outlook as well. But how do I get them to my Motorola Defy? I don't have any software which will recognize Defy when I connect it to my PC.

From outlook you can go to export contact which will create file with all contacts in VCard format.

Login to google account (which you intended to connect in defy), select import from file in google mail-> contacts.

Now add this account in defy and do a sync of contacts.

This is fastest way!

What exactly where you trying to update with.?

1) Are you getting the Phone recognized in ODIN? If Yes just use one of the packages that has standard firmware files and flash it.

2) Is it saying unable to mount in Windows? Just reinstall Kies. Uninstall Kies and delete all files related to Samsung from registry and reinstall.

if you can get into recovery mode i think you can flash the rom through recovery mode. Instead of ZIP you can use the Zimage to directly flash

And dont worry, the phone is never a brick unless the mother board is done.....The USB jig option is still there.

Did you check your phone's relevant pages on Sam Firmware Forums? Or XDA forums?

I had also almost bricked my SGA, but found a way to make ODIN detect the non-responsive phone. Used a new firmware and flashed it via ODIN to revive the handset.

The 10.1. tablet looks definitely very very tempting - however it misses out 1 key feature - GPS.

That is really a deal breaker for me. Else would have instantly purchased it.

For SMSes, I used MyPhoneExplorer to sync all SMSes on to my PC from my Sony Ericsson W890i. When I get my Android later this month, I will sync them back from the PC to the new phone.

Unfortunately, MyPhoneExplorer only works with Sony Ericsson and Android phones. So it won't help for a Nokia.

If you want to bypass Google in this, just use myPhoneExplorer. Linky is in above post by johnjacob.

That application does not work with Nokia. My older phone is a Nokia E51. Hence this may not work.

One newbie question:
Where is the exit button for any application that we launch in Android?
e.g. if I browse a site and I need to close the browser application to free up memory or if I play a song and I need to close the media player application?

That is the idea right now. Since I am an 1d0t who does not run Windows, and have a LInux only shop, did a long search (4 hours) and finally, discovered heimdall. Only two files - 44 Kb and 92Kb. Yup - K and not M.

Now to find a proper stock ROM image. Any clues on this will be helpful.

Before that, i suspect doing a clean reset (clearing user data - the 3rd option in recovery mode) may help. WIll try it later tonight.

No - while booting after the install.

I realise that I have done a dumb thing - chose the wrong file to root.

Did - but now I realise that I had not dug deep enough.

See above - that is what I will be trying. Looks like it will take me couple of days to find enough peace of mind to do this. Requires lot of patience, right?

Edit:- I had renamed a file named S5570XWKC1_MOD_ROM.zip as update.zip and tried to load it from recovery menu of the phone. Obviously, that is not the way.

What I actually wanted to do was to use another file - upd_1.zip, which contains a file named superuser.apk. Price of staying up late. ;-(

Keep pressing back button till u reach homescreen / simply press home!

No need to try and do any memory management. Android manages it by itself (and is quite good at it as well!) See this thread:
