New SUZUKI SWIFT SPORT could weigh 870kg , a drop of ~ 135kg from its predecessor, to deliver a power-to-weight ratio of 159 hp/ton and to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph), in less than 9 seconds!.

Combined with the 1.4-liter petrol engine that powers the Vitara S, producing 138 HP and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque, this recipe would allow the next Swift Sport to deliver a power-to-weight ratio of 159 hp/ton, thus beating more established vehicles, such as the Toyota 86.

The driving dynamics is where the real story begins, and they in fact are impeccable: The new generation of this sporty car weighs just 840 kilograms - an almost incredible 120 kg less than before. But the new platform is still stiffer and safe, thanks to the use of high-strength steel.

- Maruti Suzuki will launch the New Swift in India in Feb 2018

- Swift for rest of the world will be manufactured in Japan and for India will be from Maruti Suzuki - expect some differences( in interiors? common to the new Dzire?)

- The entry-level version for Europe is powered by the 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 90 horsepower.

- It propels the Swift to 100 kmph in 11.9 seconds; top speed is a fully adequate 180 kmph.

- l 1.0-litre three-cylinder boosterjet turbo that's rated at 112 horsepower -0-100 kmph comes up in 10.6 seconds, and top speed is an impressive 195 kmph

- India is likely to get the SWIFT Rs variant with the 1.0L boosterjet similar to Baleno Rs.

The chassis is tuned to be on the sporty side, and road holding is frankly rather good. Still, the Swift is comfortable enough to filter out most potholes, and it is a capable long-distance car. The stiff platform means that there is noticeably less noise and vibration than before. The Indian Swift is likely to be a touch softer though.

The black interior with white and matte chrome contrast elements gives the new Swift a high-quality aura. Technology geeks will appreciate the 4.2-inch multi-functional display, but they will love the optional infotainment system with a 7-inch screen and Apple Car Play or Android Auto functionality

Is the 90bhp diesel the only engine this new swift likely to be sold with, in India? Read a few pages prior that diesels will also come with auto box.

Hoping a diesel engine rated higher than 90bhp gets featured with an auto tranny. Will be so much fun to drive.

Swift never had a 90BHP diesel (with the VGT) - It only had 75BHP version (with the FGT). I suspect they'll still go ahead with the 75 BHP version (unless I missed something earlier in the thread)

Japanese made SWIFT will go on sale in UK from June 01. Prices revealed.

More expensive than the outgoing model by £2000 but the new Swift gets a significantly longer technical features list.

Starting price of 2017 from £10,999 with the range topping at £15,499.

1. entry-level 89bhp 1.2-litre SZ3 car will be on sale from £10,999

2. The 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder Boosterjet engine can be had from £12,999 on the SZ-T model, which adds a smartphone link display, a rear view camera and 16-inch wheels

3. The same engine with Suzuki’s SHVS mild hybrid system starts at £14,449 as an SZ5 car, introducing automatic air conditioning, sat nav, keyless entry and electric rear windows.

4. The sole automatic Swift makes use of the 1.0-litre engine too, and is available in SZ5 trim from £15,849

Hi Volkman10, saw this bit in Autocar about the SZ5 trim.

The Swift SZ5 also gets a 4.2in LCD display in place of instrument dials. It comes with new driver assist technology including a forward detection system that uses a monocolour camera and laser sensor that can see in the dark. They first provide the driver with a visual and audio warning when an impact is likely, before triggering autonomous emergency braking that can maximise brake pressure to avoid an impact. The technology offers lane departure warning and high beam assist, and an additional radar device enables adaptive cruise control.

Do not recall any such information about LCD instrument cluster in any of the previous reviews of the new Swift if i am not wrong. Do we have any pictures anywhere else substantiating LCD display as instrument cluster.

Edit : I think i realised my mistake. I think they are referring to the colour LCD display between the two dials like we have in our Baleno. I did not realise that earlier. Sorry.

New Suzuki Swift will be launched on June 2nd in Australia. Supplies will be from Suzuki Japan.

While the new Ignis, Baleno and Vitara are doing relatively well, the Swift is the company’s most important car and the one for which it is best known.

2017 Suzuki Swift in the boosterjet configuration is likely to be the SWIFT Rs ( Swift Sport) for India!

When reviewed in UK here are some key data revealed.


When compared with Skoda Fabia,

Total output stands at 109bhp and 170Nm, which combines with the manual gearbox’s light shift action to help speed up changes. It meant the Swift sprinted from 0-60mph in 9.3 seconds – the fastest on test. With the most torque here, it was also quickest in gear, matching the Skoda at 10.9 seconds between 50-70mph in fifth, then eclipsing it between 30-50mph in third and fourth

The lack of weight helps yet again, giving the Suzuki decent agility.The steering is nicely weighted, although there’s not a lot of self-centring, and there’s some mild torque steer as the electric motor cuts in, but the controls are all nicely matched in terms of weight and response, which encourages you to make the most of the Swift’s decent level of grip.

One should not confuse safety with FE – there is no getting around it. One can’t have one’s cake and eat it at the same time – certainly not in the mass market sector, where the Swift is placed in India.

I guess it is bit of a stretch to compare the structural rigidity of an Aston Martin with a Suzuki. For a given target of Rigidity ( which I presume is lower for Swift), weight reduction using stronger material is perfectly feasible. The high strength steel benefit is no fairy tale. For Mass market players Aluminum and Magnesium are infeasible options. Hence Steel. I do not know your technical background but there is hell of a lot of stuff that is going on in material research. I guess a plastic automobile engine would also seem like a fairy tale except for the fact that it has been achieved at Lab level. Production en masse is another issue. So, pls do not call stronger materials as fairy tale.
And with due respect ( although NCAP does not deserve it), GNCAP is never going to have it's time in the sun in India. Scaremongering tactics of GNCAP to hard sell EU manufacturers agenda did not work on Government mandarins.Hence BNVSAP. I too am waiting for results of Tests as per BNVSAP for all new and current cars. Let's hold our judgement till then.
