M800 / Santro

My M800 gave me between 17-18 in city without AC and around 22 on highway without AC. With AC usage the FE dropped by about 1 to 2kmpl depending on if the AC was on throughout.

Santro Xing gives me around 13-14 in city without AC and around 17-18 on highway without AC.

City driving has been about 80km daily, so not always a bumper to bumper situation. Around 75% of the city driving has actually been at speeds of 50-80kmph and the remaining 25% at crawling speeds at Powai.

My uncle claimed to have got close to 30kmpl from his Santro eRLX, but I haven't been able to verify this figure myself. Another i10 returned figures a little better than my Santro, but it has been in the initial 5000km.

Time I update my scorp's FE. Its been real long and the last time I ventured into this thread was when I owned the baleno.

The scorp's FE hovers around 9-10kmpl in namma bengaluru's city traffic and during my last trip to Kerala it gave me a steady 13kmpl with AC 100%. Not bad for a 2 tonner.

It mean that it will not be realistic to expect the 1200 cc cars launched in the recent years to deliver better FE when compared to Maruti 800.

Some of these cars are quoting very attractive FE figures in their ads.

My query to this forum is, is any of these cars even approaching, what to talk of surpassing, the FE of Maruti 800.

I am talking of Beat, Ritz, Figo, and others.

The FE figures quoted in the ads are under test conditions, which will most likely not be your daily driving conditions (my guess).

Small size does not always mean a better FE, as newer technology may allow the EMS to open/close valves as required. For eg. in a 16 valve engine, with bumper to bumper traffic the EMS may only use 4 valves, keeping the others shut. But if you open the throttle above 40kmph, it may open all 16 valves. Again, if you want a sporty engine setup, you are going to lose on the FE front. With a small engine, as it can never reach very attractive 0-100kmph figures, you cannot but gradually accelerate and decelerate. With more powerful engines you tend to revv harder and thereby lose the FE.

All in all, even though today the M800 (or the Nano) may be the most frugal car, I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see a bigger engine returning better FE than these.

Santro Fuel Efficiency

My Santro gives ma a mileage of 12-14 kmpl with 100% AC in city on roads in Karol Bagh, Old Delhi, etc. Over 14 kmpl normally for AC usage ~ 50%.

On the highway, max has been 21 kmpl without AC however with full luggage & 4 people apart from me driving the car @ ~ 80 kmph. Generally, the mileage is 17-19 kmpl with AC usage & speeds around 100 kmph.

Not sure about M800's FE figures, but this is what I have been getting with my Ritz ZXi.

Took it to half day trip to Krishnagiri today. It performed really well on highways. As it is still under run-in, didn't want to push too much. I kept the average speeds hovering around 85-90 KMPH, touching 100 KMPH once in a while. Mileage for this 250 KMs trip was 21.60 KMPL with 100% AC ON . Route taken was Whitefield -> Varthur -> Sarjapur -> Bagalur -> Hosur -> Krishnagiri -> Hosur -> E-City -> Silk Board -> Whitefield.

Excellent figures, Gandhi. Your Ritz ZXi seems to be very frugal.

BTW what is the optimum speed for high FE when travelling on a good highway.

If it is possible to travel at 100 kmph on a road, lagaataar, will we get a better FE at 100 kmph, or at 80 kmph, or at 60 kmph, or ....?

Hi all,

I have been helplessly wanting to be part of this thread since a while now. The day has come, my registration has been approved.

I drive a 2005 swift Vxi (40,000 km run)
The drive is smooth as butter. Very refined. Although I feel my FE is on the lower side. Do let me know if its normal for Bangalore driving conditions.

FE in city with AC on 40% of the time - 12 to 13
FE on highways with AC on 40% of the time- 15

What do you think Bhpians?
