Just a small query..since this is a topic of fuel efficiency, I was wondering what's the difference in fuel average between same car make but verses manual and auto.
How much would the difference in cost per month be. I'm trying to convince my mother to buy an automatic hatch for the sheer tension free drive. Her drive to work is four km to and fro everyday in moderate to heavy traffic. I keep telling her that with an automatic it will be less stressful compared to driving a manual in traffic.
We are considering the brio automatic or the i10 automatic. I am to lazy to search the thread for the required answers. Thanks for your help and opinions in advance.

Maybe around 10%. If manual gives you 15kmpl, auto would give 13kmpl with light foot.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Honda City iVTEC 2010 model

I drive mostly during peak traffic times on Eastern Express Highway and Powai (1st, 2nd and 3rd gear in Powai).

I checked mileage during this month; full tank to full tank. I drove for 410 km before I topped up again today with 30.87 l; giving a mileage of 13.28 kmpl. The cars gauge shows a mileage of 15.9 kmpl, a difference of 2.62 kmpl. I feel it is a pretty huge difference, almost 20%.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

Maruti Wagon R Lxi 2010 model.
Done Approx 16000 km.
Fuel efficiency of 12.5 kmpl in city driving (50% bumper to bumper, 50% normal 'city' traffic) with 100% A/C on.

Is this any good?

Auto is generally more efficient when cruising, they often have taller gearing and the torque converters help in maintaining momentum.

Is there any particular driving style that you follow?

Thanks,
Hi Jignesh.

I dont have a style as such. i mostly try to keep my RPM at around 2-2.5k, no sudden changes in speed as far as possible. i do have ride with a heavy foot at times, i am sure with a light footed driver the car would be even more efficient. and also i tend to skip a gear at times, for eg from 1st to 3rd and 3rd to 5th, or from 2nd to 4th. sure it does not give me a zipping acceleration, but it goes a lot easy on my pockets.

another thing i tend to do is i tend to turn the A/C off with only blower on when it get a little too chilly, and turn it on again when i start noticing the heat just about to get uncomfortable. all i want from the a/c while driving is keep me comfortable and NOT make me feel like i am on a vacation in the Alps.

Practices like these might look cheap to some people, but its MY hard earned money that i am spending on MY car's petrol. so i dont find anything wrong with it.

Hope this helps.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

My 2005 Hyundai Santro has done 53000 odd kms and which now runs on CNG is proving to be very cost efficient when compared to my other petrol cars for my daily commute to the office. Whilst the petrol-run cars cost approx 5.5-6Rs/km to run with the A/C on always, the Santro does this job on CNG at 2.40-2.70/km! I'm lovin it

Litres consumed : 21 l.
Mileage : 17.62 Km/l. Tank full to tank full method.

Hmmmmm, that is a very good mileage. I know that City is capable of good mileage under good conditions. I've recorded over 25 kmpl on trip meter. Discounting 20%, 20 kmpl is very good. It is the city traffic that sucks.

Re: What is your Actual Fuel Efficiency?

2011 Swift LXi - done 8900 KM

City Driving - ~17 KMPL
This is with A/C off for 80% of the time, 50% time in bumper to bumper, 50% time in free flowing traffic.

Highway driving - 21-22 KMPL

Average FE shown in the car's Odo - 20.1 KMPL (since most ~60-70% of the drive has been on highways).

Other factors significant affecting the FE
a) The bunk - have noticed tanking up in Shell (uniform across outlets) and Kasturaba Road HPCL improve the mileage! (sometimes close to 2 KMPL).

b) The FE drops significantly, if I'm heavy on the pedal (city FE came down to around 14 KMPL)

My earlier ride - a 2001 Santro LE gave in better FE (got around 18 KMPL in city), even after running it for 80,000+ KMS. Maybe because it was a marginally smaller engine or because the Swift is more fun making one throttle more - unconsciously.
