This is an ACEA A1/B1 oil - older spec but HTHS (high temperature high shear)

In other words - it might work.

ACEA A1/B1 Category is removed with the ACEA 2016 Oil Sequences. From ACEA 2012: Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in gasoline engines and car & light van diesel engines specifically designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a high temperature / high shear rate viscosity of 2.6 mPa*s for xW/20 and 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s for all other viscosity grades. These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

ACEA A5/B5 Stable, stay-in-grade Engine Oil intended for use at extended Drain Intervals in Passenger Car & Light Duty Van Gasoline & Diesel Engines designed to be capable of using Low Viscosity Oils with HTHS Viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa*s. These Oils are unsuitable for use in certain Engines - consult vehicle-OEM’s owner’s manual/handbook in case of doubt.

ACEA C2 Stable, stay-in-grade Engine Oil with Mid SAPS-Level, intended for use as catalyst compatible Oil at extended Drain Intervals in Vehicles with all Types of modern Aftertreatment Systems and High Performance Passenger Car & Light Duty Van Gasoline & DI Diesel Engines that are designed to be capable of using Low Viscosity Oils with a minimum HTHS Viscosity of 2.9 mPa*s.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

Used Shell HX8 synthetic today, in my Wagon R, I must say it's a great oil for the price (bought it for Rs.1350/- for 3.5l from retail shop). Vibrations were considerably reduced and throttle response became sharper too. Will recommend it!

Turns out Amsoil Boosted XL and signature series are A1/B1 and A5/B5 approved. They also provide protection against LSPI which is specifically related to GDI engines like ecoboost. Boosted XL seems group 3 and signature is 4. Will decide between the two.

Would this be good for Swift VDi (Diesel/2009)?

Yes it will perform good in most modern diesel and petrol cars, but you should prefer 40 grade oil for diesel!

30 grade = runs thinner, less viscous drag, more fuel efficiency, comparitively less protection

40 grade=runs thicker, more viscous drag, somewhat lesser fuel efficiency, more protection

Thats for petrol engines. You can see that its API-SN rated. Their oils for diesel engines are called DELVAC.

Has anyone tried the new Castrol Magnatec full synthetic yet? Its priced around 1800 for 4L. Only the 0W-20 & 5W30 are full synthetic though. Reviews on amazon are good but I dont see how full synthetic oil is so cheap.

The Mobil 1 ESP oil above is an ACEA C2/C3 low viscosity mid SAPS content rated oil - designed for European emissions standards in both petrol and diesel vehicles. Conforms to the latest VW diesel spec 507.00 which many other oils (Shell Helix Ultra etc) don't confirm to - those are at most the older diesel spec VW 505 00. Quite a good oil if you're driving any of the newer Germans.

The C series of ACEA specs are for Catalyst Compatible cars. A and B are petrol and equivalent diesel specs.

ACEA C3 Stable, stay-in-grade Engine Oil with Mid SAPS-Level, intended for use as catalyst compatible Oil at extended Drain Intervals in Vehicles with all Types of modern Aftertreatment Systems and High Performance Passenger Car & Light Duty Van Gasoline & DI Diesel Engines that are designed to be capable of using Oils with a minimum HTHS Viscosity of 3.5 mPa*s.
As for the Magnatecs -

0w20 - API SN, ILSAC GF-5, ACEA A3/B4
5w30 - API SN, ACEA A5/B5

Quote:
ACEA A3/B4 Stable, stay-in-grade Engine Oil intended for use in Passenger Car & Light Duty Van Gasoline & DI Diesel Engines, but also suitable for applications described under A3/B3.

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

During a recent visit to Shell fuel station, I was surprised by the cheap price of Fully synthetic oil. So i did some reading.

Here are some materials from Wikipedia.(pics below) The Helix HX8 is API SN category, it just specifies some performance properties and nothing about what oil it is.

So what are we buying?

I recently bought some litres of Shell Helix 5W 40 Fully synthetic oil for my old Gypsy so as to help it rejuvenate by adding some vitamins in its diet.

The price quoted by the Shell Bunk was Rs 4900/- The same afternoon, I bought it for Rs 2445 on Amazon in a lightning deal.

A reasonably well manufactured oil with a top grade additive package. HX8 is their lower grade synthetic while Ultra is more expensive. Prices for both have come down since Shell started making these in India instead of importing in bulk and packaging them. Quality might have come down a bit too, who knows

Re: ARTICLE: Synthetic oil vs Mineral oil

@hserus: The point I am trying to make is, since Fully synthetic is just a marketing term, I wonder if it is just semi synthetic itself with a different sticker that they are giving us. (A bit similar to the term Whole Wheat)

@shankar.balan: Maruti recommend oil for Gypsy King is only around INR 800 / 900 and the recommended interval is 10K kms. Gypsy manual has no reference of this API SN since its a new category, but since it starts at 5W, it should do no harm.

It is easier if you check this comparison table.

https://shell.jungent.eu/marketing/specifications.pdf

It is synthetic but a cheaper blend of Group 3 hydrocracked, rather than base oils. Shell Helix Ultra appears to have a higher % of base oils and a better additive package.

I know this oil is a bit of overkill for my old Gypsy but in some sense it is like making up for all the abuse the poor thing must have taken all through its life. Now, I shall nurse the engine and gearbox and other components back to good health using the best possible oils and other consumables as well as taking it to the best independent service garage that I can access....the advise given to me on this was from a well known rallyist and racer who is also an expert on Maruti, particularly the Gypsy.
