Re: Tata Nano : Test Drive & Review

Not really, the improvements are a combination of cosmetic and ergonomic.
In addition: The steering wheel diameter is slightly more to reduce turning effort.
And there is additional ventilation at the rear to dissipate engine heat better.
But it is a fantastic little car, and after 1100 kms, I am a happy user.

After 3 years & 15,000km, I'm delighted by this amazing little contraption. Till date I've barely spent on maintenance, maybe totalling 1k max. I've only spent on fuel. Everything was covered either under warranty or AMC. Although I was on a shoestring student budget, I've had some of the best times travelling even upto 550kms in a day on all kinds of terribly crazy roads on some highways, and touchwood, it's still hasn't failed me.

My warranty expired this August, but I'm still as confident as ever, that if need be, I can take it wherever there's anything close to what resembles as a road.

People feel the Nano isn't doing well, but 3 of my neighbours have bought Nano's after me, 2 of my friends dads use it to get out of the congested parts of Bangalore (both quite affluent). The Nano has proved its mettle amongst all of them for its practicality and simplicity.

So, does it make sense to pick up a 2012 used Nano or go for the 2013 new one?

@GrammarNazi: Are consumables (e.g. engine oil) covered in the AMC?
What are the service intervals?

Re: Tata Nano : Test Drive & Review

A personal decision, that. Best to see both and see if the differences are worth the extra price.
Since I was buying the LX, I preferred the 2013. If I was buying a CX, I would probably have chosen the 2012.
The AMC covers all consumables. After the first service at 1000kms, every 12 months/10000kms.

The improvements in the 2013 models cannot be retrofitted into the 2012 cars. So if you want that extra ventilation for your engine, four speakers as standard fare with an in-dash music system with phone integration, an external antenna for better reception and want the power window buttons to be available at your touch and not at your stretch, go for the 2013 model.

Re: Tata Nano : Test Drive & Review

They finally nixed the fog lamps saying that electrical system won't take the load.

The car is trouble free to start with. The petrol bunk we use is one kilometre away, so tyres are cold when air is filled.

I heard Nano is coming with power steering from next year. Is it true?

I am unsure what the connection between the link and your statement about the fog lamps is.
Anyway, fog lamps have been dropped on all LX models from when? I saw them on a brand new Nano just last week.

After seeing this,I asked a friend of mine at Tata ERC. He was like "pfah! Nothing like that is happening.Someone has misled you." But then he was too fast in denying such a development...
I would be standing first in a line for a power steering Nano.
Hope they release one soon!

Re: Tata Nano : Test Drive & Review

People are really spoilt these days - why would you need power steering on a Nano of all vehicles? All it takes to use a non-PS vehicle is a bit of common sense - don't try to turn the wheel while the vehicle is static.

Re: Tata Nano : Test Drive & Review

Add to the point, we lived with maruti 800 without power steering for decades. Maruti 800 is heavier and a front mounted engine car to boot.

Same thing that I tell anyone when they frown on hearing that there's no power steering on my nano.
My wife had an elbow operation, so she can't share the Nano now.So am looking forward to ps version.

Re: Tata Nano : Test Drive & Review

The increase in price coupled with power steering will bring this car closer to Alto in terms of pricing. This may result in drift of choice from Tata Nano to Maruti which is a time tested brand. Only those of us, who want a real taste of Nano, who are fond of trying new things and have already tried their hands on Maruti would be the actual buyers.
