Fully agree on this. I am also awaiting delivery of 1.5 RWD. The dealer is time and again trying to push Petrol RWD but I havent considered it as I intend to keep the car longer and Petrol version's dismal FE is big showstopper.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Hi Bhpians and Thar owners/ enthusiasts,

Hope you all are doing well. I apologize for the long post in advance.

Recent rains and potholed roads in my hometown Kochi have once again gotten me thinking of getting a Thar. A RWD Diesel (AX(O) variant) - as my second car. I would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations. Here's a little background

I'm 26, working from home now and I have a 2014 Vento (1.6 petrol highline, MT, 40K kms). My current usage is currently very limited - occasional city and long distance trips - mostly with family. I'll be moving to Bangalore soon, but my car will mostly be used only for the Kochi - Bangalore trips (say monthly once). I am and will remain the sole driver on 90%+ trips.

While I've been on the lookout for an upgrade, I've decided to listen to some advice from this forum (don't change it if its not broken) and hold on a bit longer to the vento. This is also because I love the vento in many areas and I couldn't really find a worth vento upgrade (higher segment) under 25L.

Now, why Thar?
Broken roads, water logging, and ever increasing traffic have made me think I need a tank like car in the garage. I've driven the 4x4 a little, and was very impressed with the visibility and over all vehicle - especially given it will be a 2nd car.

Why RWD and the base variant?
I have an itch to upgrade my vento and don't want to splurge on the beater car now. If I buy a Thar now, 2-3 years down the line I can splurge on that upgrade, and still keep the Thar as a rough use car. Add to that, ever since the last gen Thar, this has been a car I've wanted.

The questions I have are
1. Is this a good choice? This is my head controlling my hearts wishes financially.
2. How is the Thar RWD AX(O) to live with? What am I really missing from the LX?
3. I'm 5 8", but my mom 5 2" and grandma 5 1" will be present for city runs. How hard will it be for them to get in? Is there a step like attachment available?
4. I've never owned a Diesel before. What are the DPF, DEF issues? Do I need to fill in ad-blue from time to time?
5. Can I expect 12 kmpl in city traffic (not b2b) and about 15-16 on the highways?
6. My biggest downside with the Thar is its lack of Diesel AT in RWD. I don't want to touch the petrol AT given costs. How is the RWD's clutch?

Last but not the least, the only other car I have in mind is a Kushaq/ Taigun. This would be a replacement of my Vento though. The Thar AX(O) is 12.5 L otr, whereas, I'm looking at about 17.5 L OTR after exchange on the mid trim 1.5 DSG VAG. But this is not an abuse friendly pick. Any thoughts on this dilemma would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Good Day,
I have recently test driven both the Jimny and the Thar(all variants) recently.
We had booked the Jimny in Jan itself and cancelled it due to high on-road price(IMHO), slow engine and rudimentary auto gear box. Please, the Jimny is a highly capable car but felt it to be a purpose built car and less fun for a strictly tarmac requirement considering the price.

Between the two, I found the Jimny’s suspension to be brilliant, far ahead of the Thar. It rides well but slow. In city, felt the Jimny is always in first or second gear (AT) and felt the engine to be constrained somehow as against free rev’ing Thar engines.

The ride, body roll control for a BOF construction is also excellent in Jimny. It glides over everything and there is no thud or suspension noise either. It’s really on another level when compared to the Thar.

I have booked the Thar RWD petrol now, with a few weeks of waiting.
Of the other points I would like to mention in favor of the Thar is the experience- The Thar gives that in an impeccable way. Right from the time one sees it, the way you climb in the cabin, the high seating position, the power it offers, the way it drives(good or bad) provides an instant shear rush of excitement which is completely missing in the Jimny. And this is what an average Joe wants in a second car. One tends to overlook the slightly jarring ride of the Thar.
I feel the Thar offers that emotional connect and fulfills the aspirational requirement to the “T”, although this is a very subjective opinion.

Actually both these cars are completely different at what they offer but the Suspension of Jimny is far better and sedan like to sum it up.

Another point to note- We went to the stock yard to pickup the TD Thar in a Scorpio N. Surprisingly the broken road was handled by the Thar much better/plusher than the N. On freeway the N is excellent of course.
Thanks -naj.

Hello,
I don’t think they have white color any more for Petrol 4x2 AT. Just checked Thar website and on selecting 4x2 petrol the white option goes away.

Thanks-Naj

Yes, you are correct. White color has been discontinued on website. It is so disappointing. I will still visit nearest store to check and confirm.

Waiting period is 8-10 weeks now. I was expecting it much lesser. Anyways, I plan to book RWD petrol AT version. And then, long wait for me
I always wanted AT petrol and cost difference between 4x2 and 4x4 doesn't make sense for me (though other day, I saw a fortuner struck in deep pothole on gurgaon Golf course extension road).
There are no discounts or dealer offerings.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Hi guys, I'll be getting my Thar RWD diesal delivered in September. Really excited for it, just wanted to know from existing Thar owners what accessories and customizations would you deem are extremely necessary for a good vibe and enjoyable driving experience:

I was thinking of getting:
1. Fog lamps- Aozoom Bi-focal
2. King kong headlights
3. Armrest-front and rear
4. Bullhorn Wrangler grill
5. Mats- Not sure which one to get.

I am also planning to get damping and maybe a under seat subwoofer. Considering various threads I have read in Teambhp, I think the ones I have mentioned would be helpful. Looking for suggestions 🙂

I would recommend going with it any day. Frankly, there is no better VFM car than the standard RWD THAR considering the style statement it offers. I guess apart from the 12.5L OTR expected, some amount should be kept aside for the music system/entertainment.

I think getting in and out would be okay for the front seats, but getting into the rear seats will be a challenge for all the adults. As said, the current THAR is best suited for 2 Adults only.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Dear fellow members,

Have a Quick question- Does installing ambient lights on interiors require any alterations/modifications to the original wiring harness of Thar?
Heard they draw power directly from ignition. Will this hamper warranty in any way?

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

BTW Mahindra should easily think of giving the iMT (Sonet/Seltos) like tech on the RWD diesel.
Would make an effortless city/highway drives. with not much increase to the price.

You can take the power from the 12v cigarette / USB socket which would not meddle with the wiring harness or the warranty.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Just did the booking for Everest White Diesel LX RWD HT MT through Mahindra Website. Picked the dealer close to my home for the obvious reason. Now the counting starts, indicated delivery lead time is 72 Weeks..

Surprisingly Mahindra deliveries the 4WD Thar in 2 months and XUX300 in 1 month. For a combination of Engine from XUV300 and body from Thar 4X4; there is 72 weeks lead time.

This can't be an operational challenge for sure; strategy to create artificial lead time so that few customers may go for the 4X4 variants which are 3.3 Lakhs more expensive (Of-course it's with extra 0.5 L Engine and 4X4 hardware).

Looking forward for the delivery..

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

I Booked the new RWD Thar Petrol AT last week (Kerala) where they initially told me the delivery will take 1 month. But I just got a call today telling me that one vehicle has been allotted to me and I can take the delivery in 2 days.

I would like to know some suggestions from fellow Bhpians here regarding the initial basic mods I should go for once I take the delivery. I am not planning for any major mods as of now.

Opted for the AWD petrol AT as it will be used as a second car hence the usage will be very less. In fact, I was wanting to Book a Jimny initially but I felt it was overpriced for what it was offering and also underpowered in comparison with the Thar's 2-litre petrol turbo, No offence to any Jimny owners.
After test-driving both I ended up with Thar which made more sense to my usage. Hope I took the right decision.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

6 Month Update: My Thar has covered 5500 kms so far.
Upgrades:
Added the rear view camera during the 1st service
Added a Osram relay and 130/100 bulbs. The light throw is impeccable.
Upgrades Planned:
Side Decals from M&M
Hella 700FF lights. None of the accessories stores in Hyderabad are willing to procure or fabricate the mounting brackets. They want me to get them done myself. Will work on getting a dwg done for the mount sometime next week.

Drive Updates
Recently completed a 850 km round trip last weekend. The initial stretch of about 110 km of the trip until an another car joined us was driven in a very laid back fashion with max speed of 93 kmph probably during an overtaking maneuver. The ecosense FE was a mind boggling 20.1kmpl.Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review-thar-ecosense-trip-summary.jpeg
The remaining 740 km of the drive was covered in a rather spirited manner trying to keep up with the other 3.2L monster we had company of. The overall FE of the trip was 13.95kmpl tankful to tankful which included driving on the Hyderabad ORR, some 4 lane national highways and some 2 lane state highways as well.
Reached home way past midnight and totally forgot to click a pic of the drive summary on Ecosense.

Went on another solo round trip of 400 km on Independence Day. Was determined to drive at speeds of 80-90kmph over the entire trip which I was able to maintain despite an itch to speed over 100 kmph. Below is the pic of the ecosense on the center console and the trip meter on the MID. Do notice that there is a variation of 3% in kms travelled.Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review-trip-summary-2.jpeg
Please pardon me for the blurry image. The overall FE of this trip was 16.5kmpl tankful to tankful.

Niggles so Far:
I encountered a strange issue where the cruise control wouldnt engage for about 3 mins after starting the ignition and starting to drive. I faced this issue about 3-4 times during this recent drive.

6 month Feedback:
We are a family of 3. My son loves riding the Thar. Overall, we are happy with the drive dynamics of the Thar and its ability to handle bad roads with ease. It does get unsettled at hifher speeds on highways when going over rumble strips and undulations, but this has allowed me maintain lower cruising speeds and enjoy the drive in the left lane, rather than zoom past cars

Hi Friend,
I did Online booking of Thar RWD D MT Hard Top on Jan 9th itself which is day of launch but Mahindra denied launch introductory price to me and telling that tentative delivery date is Jan'25. I am clueless and amused.

Please help me how I can get support from Mahindra. Tweeted (X) to Anand Mahindra and Mahindra customer care was also of no help either.
