It was there a couple of weeks back.
It still exists! I made trips past the toll in my Mangalore-registered car on March 26th and 27th and noted that non-Mangalore registered cars were made to enter the toll lane and pay the toll (some of them tried to slip through the side lane). AFAIK, a date has not been set to shift the toll to NMPT. The status quo is what it was before the statement by Mr. Gadkari.

It was said it will be moved in 3 months. They will continue to collect until the current contract period ends.

How is the road from Mysuru to Udupi via Madikeri? Any good place for breakfast and lunch? The plan is to leave early with family at 5 or 6 am and reach by 2 or 3 pm.

Mangaluru: New tender floated - Clouds of uncertainty over Surathkal tollgate closure.

The government website shows that a tender has been floated for toll collection at Surathkal NITK tollgate for the next one year. Moreover, all the six tollgates in the coast have upwardly revised the toll charges from April 1. The rates have been hiked by about nine percent.

The tender mentions the annual bid as Rs 49.05 crore. The tender invite was posted in the Central e-procurement portal on March 23 and the last date of the tender has been mentioned as 11 am on April 13. The tenders will be scrutinized on April 18, as per the tender notification signed by K V Singh of NHAI central office.

Roads are in very good condition. Best place for breakfast will be in Madikeri or next option will be Sullia.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I will be riding to Padubidri this Friday, leaving around 7 AMish, by going through the earlier posts, I can understand that Charmady Ghat is a no brainer.

There are two routes from Belthangady though, route 1 is shown as default in maps, route 2 is 7 kms shorter in overall distance, which option do you guys suggest?. I am also looking for breakfast & lunch options , I may probably stop for breakfast at Ibbani Cafe.

Route 1: Belthangady - Bajagoly - Karkala - Padubdiri
Route 2: Belthangady - Mudbidri - Hejamady - Padubidri

Route 1 is good and easy option. A small stretch between Naravi and Bajagoli had bad patches and in progress work (must have completed by now). Bajagoli to Padubidri via Nitte is very good and you would love it.

Have a safe journey !

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Returned from BLR yesterday through Charmadi. Started from Sarjapur Rd at around 10PM and reached MLR at 6AM. This was a full night drive after a long time. Encountered heavy fog between Belur and Mudigere. There was no fog beyond Kottigehara and the ghat section was peaceful.

Work is still in progress between Mudigere junction and Kottigehara. Completed sections are unmarked currently and can get tricky after driving the well marked Belur - Mudigere stretch.

I was with all the night buses between Nelamangala and Hassan. Had to maintain safe distance with these buses as most of them were kicking rubble/stone in the WIP sections of the highway. I will have to inspect the hood/bumper/windshield after a thorough wash this weekend .

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Drove from Bangalore to Brahmavara last Sunday via Hassan - Chikmagalur - Balehonnur - Jayapura - Agumbe - Hebri - Petri. Took about 8.5 hours, including two 30 mins breaks at Anagha Grand (C R Patna bypass) and Ganesh Grand (Agumbe).

This place at Agumbe is a newer version of the earlier Hotel Ganesh, with a larger parking area, better food (open till 10.30pm at night) and decent restrooms.

It had rained between Balehonnur and Hariharupura just before, dropping the late evening temperature significantly.

The turns at Agumbe ghat have got a new layer of asphalt during the recent closure. The entire stretch is now butter smooth. Even Someshwar-Hebri is patched up.

Overall a no nonsense drive with good roads all through.

Recommended for anyone heading towards Udupi/Kundapura as long as one is comfortable driving around the twists and turns near Balehonnur

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hello Guys,

Any Update on the Condition of Bisle Ghat?
Iam headed towards Puttur coming long weekend and want to avoid Shiradi as I am driving a sedan with low GC and loaded to the brim.

I took the same on my way back from M'lore in March.

The bisle ghat is good for it's entire length. Only issue, being it is narrower than the other alternatives. At times, you might have to stop and reverse to allow the oncoming traffic.

Completed this trip over the weekend, the Nitte stretch was excellent, with minimal traffic and winding roads. We had a lot of fun, thanks to your suggestion.

Good to hear that Agumbe has reopened. Will be traveling to Udupi from Bangalore end of the month.
