Did that yesterday... The ongoing road construction has spoiled the roads more than anything else.

Hassan-Sakleshpur-Donigal = Construction work
Donigal-Start on concrete road (10kms?) = Bad roads
2kms after Gundya - Uppinangady = Construction work

I turned towards GV Kere at Uppinangady, so I don't know what happens after.

I was not affected much since I drive the GV, but others motorists were really struggling all along.

Drove on this Uppinangady-BC Road-Mangalore stretch a week ago in the evening time on my way back from Kukke to Udupi. 4-lane work is ongoing all along until BC Road resulting in dust + loaded dumpers everywhere. I trailed 2 such dumpers for at least 10 mins each with no room to pass. Eased up a bit after BC Road toll, but it was short-lived with humongous traffic pileups first at Nantoor junction, then at KPT. In fact, KPT intersection traffic had backed up until Nantoor, needing ~30 mins to sneak through. Both these intersections are badly managed.

In hindsight, it was a bad judgment as my onward route via Karkala - GV Kere - Uppinangady was really good. But fellow travelers wanted some tea at the rebuilt Kalladka KT Hotel.

I still could have turned inwards from BC Road, but Gmaps kept suggesting the route via Mangalore as the fastest option to Udupi

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi BHPians,

I am planning to travel from Bangalore to Dharmasthala - Kateel - Udupi - Sringeri - and back to Bangalore this weekend.

Google map suggests the below routes -
1. Bangalore - Hassan - Belur - Charmady - Dharmasthala
2. Dharmasthala - via Mudibidri - Kateel
3. Kateel - via Pudubidri - Udupi
4. Udupi - Hebri - via Agumbe ghat - Sringeri
5. Sringeri - via Balehonnur - Aldur - Belur - Hassan - Bangalore

Please suggest/recommend if these routes are good to go or are there any deviations and exceptions I need to take...

1, 2, 3, 4 are good. You will drive peacefully. I've not yet tried Sringeri Aldur route, so not aware till there. After you join Belur, it is same as 1.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Last week, I tried two restaurants at Banakal before heading out to Charmadi ghat. I primarily stopped for restrooms, and food was secondary (to make up for the bio break). Here is my experience (and hope it was an exception).
  • There is no ambience or hygiene at Ibbani Cafe. The washroom is cramped with an Indian commode. The food was average, and the coffee was more of a sugar drink. There is no printed bill or card payment here.
  • Fresh Bean Cafe had better ambience, but the washroom and basin were dirty. The person in charge was not interested in cleaning it up. They did not serve us water, and when we insisted on regular water, they served only a glass for the whole table. They were very reluctant to accept card and then charge extra for that.

I avoid restaurants that do not accept credit cards without extra charges as I often find them lacking in customer service and more. I wish I had paid restrooms before and after Charmadi ghat to avoid such places.

Any tips from the regulars on this route?

There is a western style one on the inside near the hand washing area which can be used. In my experience, it has always been very clean. Might be a one off. My family prefers to stop there precisely for this reason.

Washroom Update on this route:

Did Manipal to Bangalore about 15 days ago. Stopped at Empire. Ladies loved the washroom - Super Clean was the verdict.

Did Bangalore to Manipal yesterday. Stopped at Aadya's. BAD. Not clean, commodes were damaged, and on top of it, toilets didn't flush properly due to low water pressure.

Yes, Empire is the best place for a break on the way to Hassan or Mangalore, very clean room restroom, and good food too compared to other pitstops on BM Road.

Hello Sir,

Have a quick query. Blr > Kundapura

This route Hiriyour > Kundapura . I know that Tumkur > Hiriyur is an excellent road, but how is the road condition from Hiriyur ?

Is it a proper well tarred road or winding potholed type of road ?

Just asking which is the better route ? ( road condition-wise )
1. Blr > Hiriyur > Kundapura
2. Blr > Belur > Charmadi > Kundapura
3. Blr > Hassan > Shiradi > Mlore > Kundapura

i.e. +/- 40km distance variance.

The best route to Kundapura is option 2 via Charmadi ghat.

Please refer my post in the thread (Bangalore - Shimoga : Route Queries) :
I went upto Hunasekatte on this route and road conditions are good, not sure from there to Muduba brige (NH 169). The NH 169 should be in good condition, Agumbe ghat is freshly tarred and good.

I too am headed to Kundapura area this weekend and planning this route via Belur - Aldur - Balehonnur - Koppa - Agumbe - Kundapura, with a halt at Belur.
Experts, any better route?

Do refer to this post - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route...ml#post5293093 (The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi)

While I drove straight from Someshwar towards Hebri, the right turn takes one to Kundapura via Belve, Haladi

This Option.1 route is not the shortest but good roads. Road conditions are as listed below:
1. Hiriyur to Tarikere - Wide SH road. Good roads. About 5 Kms near Vani Vilasa Sagara and around few towns the road will be congested.
2. Tarikere to Thirthahalli - Good roads less traffic. No option for food break.
3. Thirthahalli -> Agumbe -> Kundapura - Very good roads except that there are multiple curves.
OR
4. Thirthahalli -> Yadur -> Mastihikatte -> Hosangadi -> Siddapura -> Kundapura - Good roads. except between the stretch of Thirthahalli -> Yadur -> Mastihikatte road width is less compared to other roads. Average road quality.

Choose 3 if your destination is in-between Udupi and Kundapur else
Choose 4 if your destination is between Kundapur to Baindur
