Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

The thought (to decongest Rohtang) is right but (as usual) the implementation is hap hazard.

I guess this move will just facilitate agents to make more money by offering service to get permits made through them. Fax them the details (on a weekday) and you have a permit with you once you reach Manali (even if it's a weekend).

Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

For those who have to start their journey on weekend, there are two options to save time
1. Take sach pass - Chamba-keylong via sach pass is 308kms, but then the road is truly horrible
2. Go via spiti - you waste a day.
Delhi-Rampur
Rampur - kaza
Kaza-keylong

IMHO the Sach Pass will not be open for motor traffic atleast till the 15th of July or thereabouts.
So those wishing to travel to Leh should consider the alternate KunzumLa route, though it means an extra day!

With careful driving, its indeed achievable, except for sarchu bit, because, you don't want to cross the terrain in dark.
You can do this
1 - Chd - Kalpa - Stay at HPTDC
2. Kalpa - Losar - Stay at PWD
3. Cross kunzum, and head to Sarchu/keylong depending upon your schedule and timings.

Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

Completed our leh trip yesterday (Srinagar - Leh - Manali). Presently in manali.
IMO Del - Srinagar - Leh can easily be done on any car with decent GC but Leh - Manali route is in really bad shape and would recommend not to do this route in cars. it was raining in Rohtang/Manali yesterday needed 4 hrs to reach from Kokhsar - Manali. Also catch hold of a post paid BSLN/MTNL connection, it works most of the places including GPRS. The only place it did work was Pangong.

Which will be issued between 10AM to 5PM on Monday to Saturday (barring Second Saturday, Sundays and Government Holidays). All travelers are advised to source this permit before heading to Ladakh in their own vehicles or vehicles hired from other states.

Additionally, Rohtang Jot is closed officially on Tuesday for repairs. So if you are planing to cross it on Tuesday, make sure to leave in the wee hours of the morning from Manali.

Thanks for the info Bolero but what if we are coming back from Leh to Manali, where would we get these permits for Rohtang? at the Leh DC office?

You do not need permits while coming from leh.
When going to leh, you have to take permits from manali SDM office and then show the permit at Kothi check post.

Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

As pointed out by tsk1979, no permits required for the journey from Leh to Manali.

BTW Sach Pass is officially open. Those interested in an alternative route can try this out.

From what I have heard, the Sach pass makes rohtang look like an 8 lane expressway
BTW, chamba-Keylong is 308kms, which makes for an extremely long and ardous drive!

That's bad.
Iam doing this stretch on 12 July.
Hope it stops raining by then.
Or else no option but to go through Chandigarh to shimla to kalpa to Kaza to Keylong. takes 1 or 2 extra days.

Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

Guys, I plan to leave from Delhi on a BEAT. (Its just in my mind as of now. I have a Bus ticket booked for 1st July as my primary transport). Will be going to Delhi-Manali-Leh. Will I be able to do it in this Car? And if its doable in this car.

Can I take a detour in case there is a bad road situation from Manali to Leh? I mean via SriNagar.

I decided to go by car because it would be cost efficient and we would be carrying a lot of clothes which would be hard to carry around in the whole trip.

Thanks.

If Not how to get through other way? if there is any.
