Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

Any updates on road conditions from manali - Rohtang - Chandrataal and access to the lake? It was supposedly blocked a few days back.

Thanks.

chandertaal base parking (3kms from lake) is accessible for 4 wheelers.
On the last 3kms you can take your 2 wheeler, but if you are caught be prepared to pay a hefty fine

Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

I am planning on going to leh on my bike. the tentative dates are -
start jul25 from Delhi and return back to Delhi by aug3.

the route is Delhi-Manali-Sarchu-Leh-Srinagar-Chandigarh-Delhi.

I don't have company as of now and would be happy if anybody is interested to join me. my dates are not fixed and can be moved around a bit.

I will be riding on my Unicorn in this trip and want to ask what are the necessary preparations for the bike for this journey, any recommended tyres? Also please let me know what spares to carry.

The plan is to take my bike along with me in the train.

Any do's and don't's?

I was talking about the snow blockage a few days back, has it been cleared? (a month back i guess)

Apparently, there was no access even on foot. I need recent updates.

Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

hvkumar had mailed me this comprehensive, if not complete, list of nullahs that one encounters while driving from Manali to Leh. Should be useful for the preprations.

Rani NUllah climbing up to Rohtang Pass is one of the worst currently, small cars are finding it difficult to get through.

There is one nullah near Khoksar.

There is one near Stingiri on the way from Keylong to Jispa

Heard of one bad one near Zingzing bar on the way from Darcha to Baralacha la, and also another on descent before Sarchu.

Kanglajal just before Pang can be bad sometimes.

Whiskey & Brandy Nullahs have proper bridges, no problems at all.

Pagal Nullah also has a bridge over it now.

Little difficult. but doable by cars

Heard of one bad one near Zingzing bar on the way from Darcha to Baralacha la : This is difficult. Water flow was high

There are 3 to 4 upto Sarchu : All are doable.

Kanglajal just before Pang can be bad sometimes : BAD. DIFFICULT ONE

Crossed the same on 26th june on my Dzire. A little tough but with little focus and care you can pass through all of them. We crossed them with a single person in car, with other hitching a ride from truck whenever we came across deep slush or water

Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

Hi Guys,
Pls help me with the best route from Amritsar to Srinagar bypassing Jammu. Google maps plotted it through Amritsar - Pathankot - Vijaypur - Udhampur (bypassing Jammu) - Kud - Srinagar. Pls advise if this is the optimum route?

Regards,

Regards,
There is a bypass at Samba on the Pathankot Jammu highway. You can ask for directions from any of the towns.
This bypass will skip jammu, and merge with the main Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Udhampur.

One more bypass, which is at exact 32 kms from lakhanpur at dayal chak (turn right). Landmark midway hotel on the left. Its 80 kms and joins after udhampur.

Also pay rs 130 instead of Rs 70 at lakhanpur border.

From Lakhanpur toll gate, it is exactly 32 kms to the Dyala Chak turning point.
FRom Dyala Chak, it is 85 kms to Udhampur. You will not find this route correctly on GM or any online maps.

I have mapped this bypass on openstreetmap. Should be visible within 2-3 days.
Road added as Dyala Chak bypass.
