Mere mortals like you and me mate, we don't understand all this arty nonsense. Movies of that kind are for the truly intellectual, the quasi intelligentsia, or the wannabe arty or the downright pretentious. Me, I go to movies which entertain and make me happy! Give me a classy caper film like Gambit any day of the week and spare me the guff stuff like Ship of Theseus! Incidentally I believe this film is a bit of a misnomer or has some deep and hidden meaning which completely escapes me, and actually has nothing to do with Theseus and the Minotaur! Am I right?

Not sure what Gravity was all about. My Son loved the effects and space is something that is made for such beautiful visuals. You do remember the movie just for that. Was worthwhile though the price is too high for 3D IMAX.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

I saw Escape. Totally pointless silly movie. After a while its not even entertaining. There is "ZERO" character buildup. Everything falls into place on its own.

I remember an old advert (60 saal ke Budhe or 60 saal ke Jawan). I think it was for Chawanprash.
Seeing both icons laboring through the action feels like 2 hour version of that Chawanprash advert.

My advice to both of them. Guys if you want to do action, the Expendables stuff will be better. You were action heroes, and we loved you for Rambo and Terminator. Please do not spoil our memories.

I am in the same boat as yours. This is the reason I don't trust critics reviews. Most of the movies to which critics gave nonsense appeared hilarious and super-entertaining to me. And most of the movies including Ship of Theseus which have been awarded high-five by critics have gone over my head. A funny incident happened to me after watching Ship of Theseus, I allover the internet, was googling.. the meaning of Ship of Theseus as I never got the point of giving such title to that movie. And still I am clueless of the meaning? Regarding, the hidden meaning, my mind too was searching the great hidden secret that most of the people were successful of understanding.

Gambit has been rated 6.5 on IMDB? how's it? I never trust IMDB reviews for the same reason as I have given above.

I would like to disagree with both of you on this. While I love my Dabangg and Chennai Express' movies like Ship of Theseus are different and do provoke some thinking. Atleast it did for me. And the story is quite straight forward at that.

Bottomline: Like not all fingers are of the same size, not every movie is aimed at everyone. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean you can call names to people who did.

My 2 cents!

P.S: Loved Gambit. Will watch the Lone Ranger today.

I cannot understand the meaning of this title. Maybe I am thick skulled!

Gambit is first class!
I like IMDB a lot and do trust their reviews more than others.

Point taken but you will note that I ve put down different classifications of people. Maybe you fall into the first one! And that's a compliment not a derogatory epithet!

The Internship (2013) - 4 Star Rating - A watch salesmen duo find themselves misfits in today's tech laden age and somehow land up as intern's at Google. How do they survive with no specialised computer skills? Quite a riveting watch.

If you are fan of dark crime thrillers its worth every penny and minute spent on this. Gripping story and master screenplay. I don't know since when I have become a sucker for similar story lines (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Pledge, Silence of the Lambs etc) but this one is dark enough for my liking.
I stay on the lookout for these dark, drama, thrillers. Will surely check it out.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Saw Escape Plan

If I could summarize Escape Plan in two words, it would be: Time Pass .

Most of us who would be looking forward to this because of the pairing of our favourite childhood action heroes, Stallone and Schwarzenegger. And yes, the movie does pair them up a lot. It is fun to watch them together, but many times it feels like the script has been twisted simply to make them appear together.

Forget about any cohesion, storyline making sense, or good acting. There are a couple of nods to their heyday and iconic Schwarzenegger poses relived, but not much else in terms of cool action sequences.

Ultimately, Escape Plan lacks the suspense or thrill or a prison breakout movie, nor is it completely fun. It seems to be confused about what kind of movie it is.

Verdict: 2/5 (Wait for it on DVD for renting).

Let me try to explain the meaning of the title.

Imagine a war ship named "Theseus" that was instrumental in winning many battles in the Sea. The ship was in service for many years and slowly its parts had worn out and is not in service anymore. Now you replace the worn out parts of the ship with new parts and bring the ship back to service. Now a question is asked. Is the ship the same one as the old?

Some say it is not the same ship because the worn out parts were instrumental for its success and since they are all replaced, the ship cannot be the same as old. These people claim that the sum of the parts make the whole. An other group say that the parts are not important and only the whole is important. This became a paradox and is called "Ship of Theseus" paradox. If you replace the engine in your car, would you call it as a new car or still the old car?

The characters in the movie have their parts replaced (Eye transplant, Kidney Transplant etc). So do they become new people or still the old selves? This is what the movie is about.

Re: The English Movies Thread (No Spoilers Please)

Before I saw the movie Ship of Theseus, I just looked it up on the internet and learnt about what it was.
The movie was not bad but the idea/philosophy itself that started in me just reading about it on the net was not matched by the movie.
You need to see it as not just a attempt to show (however good the idea is), but how well its shown which was not all that great for me.
Girish Kasaravalli's movies provoke such thinking without reading about it.

Finally watched Gravity. Believe me the only place to watch it is at Imax. Brilliant experience.

I was warned that the movie is slow paced, with not much in terms of a plot, so I was prepared. As a result, quite enjoyed myself!

Pacific Rim - Godzilla crossbreeds with King Kong to produce 1000s of offspring, who meet their match when men reverse engineer Transformers technology to build and operate super-sized mecha of their own.
And yeah - it is always stormy around 2020, perhaps the effects of global warming?
Mindless fun? hell yeah! Scientific accuracy?
4/5 from my end - depends how you look at the film.

I had been waiting for so long to watch this movie on IMAX, but my friends forced me to a normal puny screen to watch this movie 2 days back and I was so underwhelmed :(. I have to watch this again on the huge IMAX screens when I'm back in Canada in a few weeks.
