My XUV 500 is due for oil change. I'm planning to get either Motul 8100 excess or Shell Helix Ultra. Both are 5W-40 fully synthetic. I'm not able to decide between these two, any pointers on which one will be better considering the XUV 2.2 Engine?

Neither of them. You need a ch4 or higher 15w40 oil if you don’t use Mahindra’s Maximile Feo.

If you want synthetic in this range Mobil Delvac 1 is ci4+ or Amsoil 5w40 Turbo Truck is ck4 rated.

The motul and shell ones are api cf which is an older spec. Not suitable for XUV / Scorpio.

There seems to some confusion on this point. The C series of engine oil specifications were not updated as much as the API grade were. Even the Liqui Moly Toptec is CF grade but API SN certified which is being used for most of the latest German Cars. Also as per many of the users they both have been used in Diesel Vehicles needing 10w-40 or higher viscosity oils. Probably this still remains a topic of debate but if we go by CH4 and higher in 15w-40 then we are left with mineral oils only barring the very few synthetic oils available in the market.

API S standards are for petrol engines, S for spark, C for compression standards are for Diesel engines.

Most of the oils additionally have ACEA (European equivalent of API) standards indicating dual use for petrol and Diesel engines and several cars sold in India specify oil based on ACEA not API standards.

Mahindra specifies API standards and here a mineral CI4+ or even CH4 might end up better than a synthetic CF spec oil. The latest C spec is CK4 which the Amsoil I mentioned has.

Five years is fine if the oil has been properly stored, sealed properly and not exposed to heat. And upto a year after the can is opened for any partially left over oil.

The oil itself has been underground for lakhs of years, so even 500 years more might seem ok, but it is the detergents and other additives that will break down and spoil it.

Interesting thread. Just this morning I took My Hyundai Tucson Diesel AT to the service station for a wash up. I had asked about the oil change as the car has done 27000 km. They mentioned presently I am using a standard mineral oil and recommended that I change to synthetic oil when i hand in for the 30,000 km service.

My question is.... is it worth changing to a synthetic one and which one (brand/spec)??

The 2 liter petrol Tucson needs a 5w30 (most Petrol Hyundais ask for 5w30 A3/B4). Not much choice for A3/B4 in 5w30 - shell helix hx8 is decent as is castrol magantec professional.

The 1.6 diesel Tucson asks for 15w40 API CH4 or higher, and that too 7.6 litres of it rather than 4 litres for the petrol Tucson. If you want a synthetic that fits CH4 - see my previous posts, Mobil Delvac and Amsoil Turbo Truck are what will fit the bill, both in 5w40 rather than 15w40 but that's fine. Even if you stick to mineral 15w40, there's far better oils in the market that fit your spec, like Mobil Delvac MX and Shell Rimula R4.

My Figo 1.5D is up for oil change again at 80k km. I am finding many oils being available in 3.5L cans. The recommended oil capacity is 3.8L. Is it ok to fill 3.5L instead of 3.8L? I am thinking of changing at a shorter interval too.

Hi, I am no automotive Guru, but I wouldn't fill lesser than recommended engine oil quantity. You could buy 1 can of 3.5L and 1 can of 1L, and save the leftover oil for a top up, if/when needed. Btw, what is the grade/spec for the Figo 1.5D?

Ford spec wss m2c1913c/d which only has Mobil super 3000 x1 5w30

Alternatively acea a5/b5 5w30 if you can’t get Mobil super - valvoline all climate advanced and idemitsu 5w30 (this one is available in 4 liter cans)
