Yes, it is fine. CI spec is backward compatible to CH spec oil.

If you use it, please post your review after few thousand kms usage

Should be perfectly fine, as Sagar says.

CI4 / CI4+ also has Mobil Delvac 1, Shell Rimula R4 and HP Milcy Turbotech (https://www.amazon.in/dp/B01M63T707/) - this one also has ACEA E2 / E7 for extended drain intervals.

Or go the whole hog and get Amsoil 5w40 Turbo Truck which is synthetic and the much newer (hardly 2 years old) CK4 spec.

If only Amsoil was available in a 5 litre can. They should have switched over to Litre containers from gallon if they are selling in India.

Currently, Delvac 1 retails for about Rs.4,000 for 5 Litres. SO Amsoil is cheaper than Delvac 1 per liter. Let me hope they come up with a 5L can by the time our i20 is due for its next service. Will definitely want to try out the only alternative synthetic option available for diesels.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Thought of posting this query here rather than on the Aspire thread.

I have a Ford Aspire TDCi run 15k kms. The last oil change was done at 10400 kms at the service center. My running per year does not cross 10k kms, which is a mix of highway and city runs. Knowing that Ford uses an oil of low viscosity which is known to reduce over time, is it fine to run with it till the next service, by which the car would have run around 18k kms?
The catch here is that my engine is re-mapped and I was told by the first tuner to replace the oil every 5k kms for the same reason.

Is it fine to use the oil for around 8k kms or thereabouts annually or do I need to change it in between? When I checked the oil level and feel, it seemed fine.

Add Kixx D1 Platinum Plus by GS Caltex India to that. I've used it for 2 oil changes, and no complaints at all. They also have one which is CJ compliant called Kixx HDX Euro. Only problem with GS Caltex oils is procuring them via a distributor (at least in Pune), as they are not available with normal retailers.

Cheers,
Vikram

They also sell in 1 quart (948 ml) besides 1 gallon (3.78 l). You have a bit left over for a topup that way if you buy a gallon and 2 quarts.

Feel isnt an accurate measure. Pay for a used oil analysis from some lab if you like, else the oil is cheap so change every 5k. Watch for signs of black smoke from your exhaust and ideally change well before that occurs.

I have seen GS Caltex manufactured Kohler branded oil - probably an OEM or white label product - at my usual store VMS Auto Centre in GP Road, Chennai.

I get Amsoil from a Coimbatore based distributor as well, even after paying Rs.140 for them to ship it by bus cargo to Chennai, it costs me a few hundred less than buying off Amazon

Re: Amsoil or SHC?

Could you please help me decide between these 2 synthetic oils for my swift VDi(2009)? I would like to know pros n cons of using the same.

Last time had used Mobil Delvac 1 and would like to try something new.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Use the Shell 5w40 - good enough for older petrol and light diesel engines. Truck oil like Amsoil and Delvac are possibly overkill for smaller diesels.

Anything 5w40 and ACEA A3/B4 should work for you. In fact for a pre 2012 diesel Swift maruti recommends 15w40 so get Shell HX5 in 15w40 and that should be more than adequate.

HX5 seems to be mineral oil. I was looking for fully synthetic alternatives for 'Delvac 1' on my Swift VDi(2009).

Yes it is mineral. But it is API SN. And you have a rather old (and possibly high mileage) engine that was meant to run on 15W40 or even 20W40. Maruti only modified their guideline to support 5w30 on post 2012 Swift models.

Stick to HX5 and change every 7-8K km. You'll be fine. HDEO like Delvac are overkill for small diesels.

On Amazon, below two proclaim to be HX5 and 15W40 oils.
One is exclusively for Diesel and other is for both fuels.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

The first is ACEA A3/B3 - suitable for petrol and light duty diesel vehicles.

The other is suitable for diesels and is API CH4. If Maruti is ok with a CH4 diesel oil, you might as well buy and use that 5W40 Amsoil CK4 Turbo Truck.

1. It is pretty expensive as oils go

2. The lower weight / viscosity + additive package in the Amsoil might be a concern at lower temperatures given your car is old and will have brittle seals. It is quite likely that cleaning any sludge out of your engine will make it leak until you replace the seals. Stick with a good mineral or semi synthetic oil.
