Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

I am in a confusion regarding some electrical issues on the Nano.
My 4 year old Nano had its battery drained after a 2 week interval of non-use. At first, we had recharged the battery and everything seemed fine. The electrical guy suggested that it must be due to the battery's age. A 500km drive later, now in bangalore, I again had left the vehicle idle for a week. This too resulted in a drained battery. I bought a new tata green battery, which functioned normally for a week with intermittent use (1-3kms/3times a week). One day, I saw that this battery also has drained! I gave it to the dealer who I had bought it from. He (a nice guy), loaned me a fully charged battery. Again 5 days of inactivity later, the loaner battery has also drained.
To summarize,
Day 1 : 4 year old battery drains. recharged
Day 7 : 4 year old battery again drains
Day 8 : New battery bought and fitted
Day 20 : New battery also drained
Day 21 : Loaner battery fitted
Day 26 : Loaner battery drained
I have a music system and ciggarette lighter adaptor (which has not been working for a year now) as accessories
My music system was acting up from the first time my old battery had drained. The system wouldn't remain switched off after pressing the power button. It would switch off and then within 5 secs, switch back on. So I resorted to removing the head unit, when vehicle is not in use. I read in google that there are parasitic loads, which can drain batteries. There is a wikihow on how to check for parasitic loads.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...PxXw5NkTCYTLJA

When my new battery drained and after I got a loaner battery, I had followed the wikihow on my multimeter which was not showing any abnormal readings that could point out a parasitic load. So my music system should not be the cause, atleast as per the wikihow.

So what is it? Does anyone know how to check out the fuses on the Nano? There is a fuse layout diagram on the right side below the steering wheel, but I couldn't find the fuse box that looks like it. I could try getting a charged battery and after removing the music system and ciggarette lighter fuses I could check and see if it drains.

I does sound like you have a parasitic load somewhere. One way to check it is to use a multimeter to check the current (not voltage) to see how much is being drawn with the key removed. While I'm not sure about exactly how much current would be normal, I think that it would have to be less than 50 mA. If the current is higher than this then the next step would be measure current across each fuse with the key removed to narrow down the part of the electrical circuit which might have the problem.

This is an auto electrician's job so if you are not confident about doing this on your own find a good electrician to solve the problem.

A culprit sometimes is the security system. It can go bad and start to draw a lot of current. This line is not always fuse protected so you may have to disconnect it if necessary.

Good luck!

This happened to my Nano CX when it was about 3 years old. There could be 2 issues here.
1. The alternator belt doesn't last more than 20000 kms in the Nano. I started doing preventive maintenance and change the Belt (which probably costs not more than 200 bucks) at every 2 services.

2. when my Nano was 5 years old the starter motor gave up. The roadside electrician did a repair and put it back(didn't have to replace the whole unit). Repair itself costed 2000 bucks(as the mechanic removes and fixes back the starter motor. Quite a complex job this thing as there are a number of parts to remove to get this out!). The electrician just repairs the motor.

Both these issues could cause battery drain. End of 3 years , I had to replace the battery because of a simple alternator belt :(. Does't come cheap, this Battery.

I gave it for repair at Concorde, dairy circle last week. I had a rattling sound when I switch on the AC (no rattling when only the blower is running). This also I had mentioned.

They kept the vehicle for four days and suspect the music system only. For now they have removed the fuse for the same and asked me to observe if the battery was draining. Understandably, they cannot repair the music system. They called me and told me that my brake cylinders were leaking and got that changed too.

About the AC noise, they said there is a slight bearing noise that only trained people can observe, but it should be fine to run. I asked the SA,whether they're have checked mountings and all,to which he relied in the positive. I paid and took the vehicle in the evening. I took the vehicle out during lunch and now the rattling is worse than ever and the AC performance is bad in the Bangalore noon time traffic. I have raised a complaint with the helpline, but feeling disappointed, with the complaints propping up just after the vehicle completed its warranty period.

Radiator

To be frank I love my Nano so much that I actually don't like visiting this thread quite often.

But then I have something to contribute from my side this time My nano is doing excellent job without any issues so far and the current issue is a non issue too but then lets see what can be done to it.

Well I am talking about the radiator. I had bought used Nano without going through any checks. As the car was absolutely good. But when I went for first servicing after few months the mechanic told me that a pipe which goes from Pressure cap to No loss tank is broken and was attached using M Seal (at the pressure cap end). I told him to again apply M Seal and then I drove the car for one year I never had any leakage problem or something like that.

Recently I again went for the servicing and the same question was asked by mechanic what to do with the Broken joint of the pipe as there is no way to attach it. I really didn't care to take pic of the radiator to share it with you guys. The mechanic told me it was risky to drive with it as the Engine may any time break down if the coolant leaks from it. I was not at all convinced because I had done 1000 kms long drive in last year and few 200 kms long trips I was sure that no coolant was leaking. And when I studied Radiator from google what I understand is the pipe which is broken is used to flow the coolant to no loss tank from the pressure cap which comes because of higher pressure.

I don't know whether I was able to explain you the problem properly. I would like to get input from you guys whether I should take care of that issue or change my radiator as there is no other way to repair it. If the problem is not clear to you I will come up with Photos.

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

You can get the nozzle welded rather than applying m-seal, if the radiator is metal. If its plastic, then better to get the thing replaced.
When the pressure inside radiator is high enough, the spring loaded radiator cap lifts up to drain excess pressure and coolant into the coolant reservoir. When the pressure drops, the coolant is sucked inside radiator from this reservoir, thus maintaining coolant level inside radiator. If this pipe connection is broken, some coolant will spill out of radiator when cap lifts up, thus lowering the level of coolant inside radiator. This can cause overheating issues and would damage engine gradually. I say gradually, because complete coolant will not spill out, but only in parts. So, you can decide how you want to proceed based upon this information i have provided.

TATA nano - List of ALL issues

The Nano's AC had very weak airflow in ventilation mode. I opened up the air intake under the bonnet and found a pile of leaves that were blocking the flow.

The airflow, though, is still weak in both circulation and ventilation mode (I can barely feel any air in the back seats with the blower at max). The air cooling itself is ok, and I got the AC cabin filter cleaned last week; the airflow isn't strong. Any ideas why?

One AC guy told me the cooling coil needs cleaning. Another said the AC ducts are dirty. Not sure whom to believe.

Another clue is that when the blower is set on "feet only" mode, the flow is very strong.

Should have updated earlier.
The battery drain seems to be due to the music system, because after they disconnected the fuse, the battery has not drained.

After raising the complaint of AC rattling noise on the helpline, I was called to Concorde motors again. It took some time to recreate the rattling. They kept the vehicle at my insistence for 4 days and said at the end of it that I'd have to replace my AC compressor. It would come up to 17k is what they said. For now have taken the car back. I thought I'd get a second opinion from an AC specialist, before taking the plunge.

I experienced this first hand today. After 4 years of mostly trouble-free running, my nano lx refused to start earlier today. I had filled fuel just before this incident and had driven a few KMs. So I suspected the fuel. But the road-side assistance guy who came from Concorde (Hosur Rd) said the fuel pump may be the problem. He opened a cover on the floor under the front-passenger seat, tapped lightly while I turned the ignition... and the engine came back to life. He then said that I possibly ran the car with the fuel gauge showing "E" for a little too long. He advised me to fill fuel as soon as the guage dropped to a single bar and went away. He also warned that one more such incident would mean replacing the fuel pump!

A few hours later, the engine stopped again... The worst part is that this time I was bang in the middle of the Madiwala underpass :-( The already jammed traffic got worse... Fortunately, a mechanic passing by in his jeep offered to tow me to a point just past the silk-board flyover. From there, I walked across to Concorde and talked to them. A mechanic came by, did the tap-tap routine, and the engine started up. I drove up to the service center, and left the car there. The service rep said he would call after taking a look Keeping my fingers crossed...

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

I spent my entire Sunday last week with my friend in Tata service centre who bought a pre-owned Tata Nano Twist from authorized Tata dealer in Pune. The car is 2014 February manufactured (as per VIN) and 2014 July sold Nano Twist XT which had run only 21000 kms so far.

My friend bought it thinking that ASSURED pre-owned car from authorized Tata dealer will not give him troubles.

Now here is the list of troubles he got:
1. Central locking remote was in worst condition, stopped working next day. He somehow managed to clean it and then it worked.
2. Previous owner had given new JK tyres. He checked and found that right side rear tyre is 135/70 . It should be 155/65.
3. Wiper washer motor was damaged.
4. Driver side lock rubber bead was missing.
5. There is a hole which holds bonnet via a metal rod. It was misaligned.
6. Spare tyre was flat. After his repeated requests they made it usable.
7. The car had transparent films on all windows. I had to help him pull them all out because as per court rules even transparent films are not permitted.

If he had bought the car from some roadside dealer, this was expected but from a Tata dealer and supposedly assured car should not have such problems.

He thanked me for helping him but I promptly mentioned Team-BHP because I learnt it all here .

Request all to double check assured pre-owned cars from authorized dealers to avoid such issues.

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

Hello Friends and Nano Experts!
I want help regarding Engine Coolant High Temperature Indicator.

"Engine Coolant High Temperature Indicator" of my Nano remains on even after the Engine is in running condition. I took my car to the Tata Authorised Service Centre. I got it scanned. I got no errors. Everything is working properly. I checked the coolant level which is on maximum level. The radiator fan is working properly too.

I was told by the service person that the issue has not been found. They will have to check the earthing points in car. I was told they will check 7 or 8 (I don't remember the exact figure) earthing points. For which I was asked to keep the car for whole day which I refused. The service person told me that they will have to remove all the mats and it will take time.

My questions to the expert here are
1. What could be the actual reason for the above issue.
2. Shall I continue with the service centre decision to check the earth points. For which I will have to keep the vehicle there for whole day and I really don't have patience to deal with TASS. There procedure is really long.

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

I hope engine is not running genuinely hot. Does the light stay on even after cold starts, like in the morning? In case it does, then either it is a case of bad earthing or the temperature sensor going kaput.

Regards.

Thanks Saket77 for prompt reply. Yes, The light stays on even after the cold start. And sometimes it goes off anytime. And then again it may light up. Is that anything to do with the rains? Some times I have observed the Low Battery light turning on or the parking light turning on even when the parking brakes were not applied. But sooner both the lights went off. The only light remained on was Temperature Light.

As per the manual the light should blink and there is a buzzer sound if the Engine temperature goes up. But in this case the light is not blinking and neither I got the buzzer sound. I also hope there is some earthing issue.

Re: TATA nano - List of ALL issues

My 1 year old Nano has just 2 issues. The HU always has an issue pairing with Bluetooth for some reason (i know, not mechanical in nature). And the second thing is a little more irritating. There some judder while reversing. Have you guys faced this? Concorde guys say that this is normal.
