HTC 3400 and Dopod D600 are the same device. HTC now owns Dopod, a company that used to distribute HTC products (rebranded) in South East Asia before that.

Vodafone Mobile NZ Limited use GSN 900/1800 just like India, so any GSM phone issued in India will work in New Zealand.
Cell phones are cheaper in India. And the latest is available in India. I would recommend that shopping for a mobile handset is better done in India !

I can attest to having used my Indian issued GSM phone all over continental Europe with an Indian Spice Telecom (Calcutta-issued) SIM card with international roaming.

Steer,

There are quite a number of differences between both like Dopod d600 runs on Windows Mobile 6 while the HTC 3400 runs on WindowsMobile 5.0 Pocket PC.

For the difference in between them, you can have a look at this link

THe comparison you've pointed me to shows the following diffs:

Mega Pixels: X 2 MP

not true since the D600 has a 2 mp camera too.

OS: Windows Mobile Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 PocketPC

There is no mention of Windows Mobile 6.0 for the Dopod.

They are the same, trust me.

@Steer: Heard of this one?

AT&T Tilt 8925 - Unlocked

Does it make sense having a phone bought and deliverd in the US and then brought down to India?

Does it make sense to buy it in the US unlocked? The reason I was wondering about this model is because the Tytn II is priced at close to US $770 whearas this one is at $560 or something. Wonder why the difference in price

TyTN is an older model & TyTN II (aka Kaiser /Tilt) is the newer version with updates such as WM6 Professional, GPS, 3.2 Meg camera...being a few.

Compare phones - GSMArena.com

The above link has a comparison.

Unanswered questions.

Anyone have an idea where to get TyTN II in India? Almost bought it in KL (~RM3K, ~INR 36K. Launch imminent, according to HTC India, but this seems to be more like "real soon now".

The Touch Cruise is available for around 27K.

If its sold by AT&T, then they've subsidized the price and you will have to tie up with them for a monthly contract when you buy it (sort of like the iPhones). But if you're buying it from that online shop then it isnt tied to a contract (+ its unlocked) so its just branding without subsidy.

Go for it.
