Oh! They seem to be scrutinizing packages that are under-valued, may be!

I have the same dashcam in my Creta and I got a bill that read ₹2,790 + ₹30 (postal charges) = ₹2,820 (42% customs duty).

Funnily enough my dashcam arrived with 0 duty, it was marked as a gift instead of being undervalued.

Probably some guy that browses Team-BHP!

A relative who spends a lot of time in SIngapore on business showed me what he just brought back for two cars. It seems everybody in SIngapore used dashcams, and prices are lower than Aliexpress!

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

The postman called. My Viofo A119S V2 worth US $105 or roughly Rs.7000 has incurred an excise duty of Rs.2134. Well, compared to the Rs.12K price of the dashcam on Amazon.in I'm still saving around Rs.3K. Still worth it.

I too bought one at $43.13 on 31st March. It was sent thru GATI & delivered on 17th. I wasn't charged duty. Strangely, there was no bill (or even sellers address) with the package (!), so dunno what was the declared value.

Are you going to hardwire it? You own a Fiat Linea right? Just take care that you don't stick on the IVRM sticker area (the black dotted section) because the sticking would not be strong. If you planning to do the alignment and sticking part alone then better to get help. I stuck the mount alone and it was slightly mis aligned.

Same as me. Looks like they have this one on the list, and that's what they charge for it

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Now that my 2 x Viofo A119s have arrived , I would like to buy a SD card.
I am ok with 2-3 days worth of recording and then rewriting over it. Approx. how much period is stored on a 8 GB card?

It depends:

  • 1920x1080P 60fps
  • 1280x720P 120fps
  • 1280x720P 60fps,
  • 1280x720P 30fps

The above resolution options are available for selection along with what you choose for Loop recording: 1/2/3/5/10 minutes.

I have kept it at 1280x720P 60fps @ 3 minutes loop recording. Each file size is around 250MB (IIRC!). The 1080p @ 3 minutes loop recording option was having a file size of 500MB.

My order of VIOFO A119S has reached Chennai and current status is showing as "Held by Customs". Going by the trend, let me also keep Rs. 2134 ready.

For such a low cost my advice is to just pay up and enjoy the DVR.
It got delivered today when I was in office. No customs charge

So, the customs duty seems to be 1800 +324 (GST at 18%). So, if we assume that 40% is levied as customs duty, then they have fixed INR 4500 as the base price for this Dashcam.

Received my viofo today and it was valued at 6$ on the package. Did not have to pay the duty, lucky I guess. 21 days, order to delivery.

Surprise! Received the parcel today without any customs charges. I see the seller has marked the package as gift and valued it at 11$

I suspect... It doesn't matter what they write on the slip, it matters if a customs guy spot checks it.

"Gift" has no meaning anyway. "Gifts" are not exempt
