I saw the PRIEMER Truck the other day, if raced past before I could click a picture. Very nice stance and can actually carry an ACE in its loading bay. Another one of those vehicles which have potential but are let down by other factors

@Ram

That MAN has a 9 speed splitter GB. One starts off in low range for gears 1-4, then shift into high range and 1st becomes 5th. It has 9 forward speeds, including the crawler marked 'C'.
Splitter GBs usually have 2 reverse ratios, but this one seems to have only one.

The second switch seems to operate the interaxle diff lock on a 6x4 tractor.

You must have noticed the rather inadequate load equalizer mechansim on the 3 axle trailers. It barely copes when trailer chassis is stepped so that the bed remains horizontal. In the case of inclined chassis, the front axle lifts-off if there is not sufficient payload, and even when it is loaded, the rear two axles are bearing a larger portion of the weight.

4021 didn't do well in the market because it was too expensive. It had imported gearbox (9 gears) and drive axle, both from Eaton. So, Tata introduced the 4018 which has Tata's own desi gearbox and drive axles. Power and torque ratings had to be lowered for this gearbox.

Posting 3 pictures:

1) Ashok Leyland Avion, spotted at BIAL. The reflection of a blue coloured bus on it's windshield is that of Tata Starbus, which loosely resmebles the Volvo B7R city bus in its construction.

2) That's how most of the privately owned buses plying around Dakshina Kannada, Udupi districts look like. This transport co. is one of them.

3) Memories of yester years. Used to travel by the bus on the right most side (next to the petroleum tanker) during the final year of my academic course, and it's been 10 years since then. Wonder why it's lying in this condition. It's a Tata 1312TC model, and has a seating capacity of 45.

Saw my first Ashok Leyland Luxura in South Bombay (D N Road) yesterday. Went by too quick for me to take a photograph. Had private colours, but could not get the name.

So AL sells it fully built, like Starbus range from Tata? Who constructs the body?

1312 TC was the first Tata chassis to be fitted with the Cummins engine. It was available only as a bus chassis.

In early 1980s, there used to be another Tata 1312. It was a 13 tonne GVW truck chassis (no bus version was available) with Tata's own 5-litre engine - the 695DI, slightly bigger and more powerful than 1210's 4.7 litre 692DI. It was Tata's rival to AL's Tusker and sold in decent numbers.

A four cylinder version of 695DI did duty on Tata 807, an 8-tonner that was launched in anticipation of the Indo-Jap LCVs. In response, AL came out with CHEETAL which had 4 cylinder version of the Hino engine that was later also used in the civilian Jonga.

My uncle had this 1312 truck, it had the front styling similar of the Tata 4018 featured earlier. It was only us who had such vechicle rest all had 1210s even we have 1210s and 1612s. and 1312. Sadly we had to sell it to scrap dealer once the law for 15 yrs old vechiles came.

Found this rather interesting truck on flickr.com.

Is it the 1613 in a 6x2 configuration ? Was it sold as that in India ?

i dont think tata ever sold such things in india,or unless there was some special order

i never understood why tata sold better products outside india
one reason could be the demanding marke in places like SA

No this model was'nt sold in India. It's difficult to say exactly which model this is without looking at the model sticker. Externally, most of them look similar. In fact many models of Tata trucks have never been sold in India. For eg. they sell 713 in many countries. It's an LCV but with a six cylinder 6-litre engine, with a top speed of 130KMPH. Who would buy such a product in India?

Tata had set up a JV company in Malaysia called TATAB Industries in 1970s. Soon after its introduction, the Tata truck was outselling all other CVs in Malaysia.

Haven't you answered your question yourself?

Well, actually the Indian market is the most demanding in the world - the Indian transporter expects his 16 tonner be actually a 25 tonner but with the fuel consumption of an LCV. CV products which are in line with user patterns of more developed markets wouldn't please the typical Indian transporter. But then, things are changing!

I always try to lookout for Tata 4923s (which has a 9 Speed gearbox) on the road, but till date, havent seen any. Infact, most of the new tractor-trailers seen on the road seem to be the 4018. It seems to be the largest selling tractor head in India. How much does it cost ?

According to this news I stumbled upon, the 4923 costs 33Lakhs ex-showroom.
