Re: The iPhone Thread: Update iOS 5 announced!

Samurai, why does Apple keep so much control on its developers and apps? Is that a pro or a con? I think it limits the features that can be offered on the apps. Look at Android. I am missing so many features after having paid so much while Android guys are enjoying it all.

Re: The iPhone Thread: Update iOS 5 announced!

The phone was bought in Dubai, and the carrier that it was locked to, I do not know. I am using a different carrier here though, Vodafone. I do get the "cannot activate cellular network" notification at times, but there is no problem in using the phone.

How do I identify if my phone was factory unlocked anyways?

iPhone sold officially in DXB are NOT locked to carriers, they do come with contract but that does not mean they are locked. Am using one here in India.

You can upgrade if its is a phone sold OFFICIALLY through DU or Etisalat.

No it doesn't. It is not a jailbroken phone.

Let me clear this up : I got it as a gift from my father, whose friend bought it for him from Dubai. What he told my father was that the contract was cancelled by the shopkeeper before the phone was given to him.

What is DXB btw? Now this phone had a contract (apparently, I'm still hazy over this fact), and it was terminated by the shopkeeper. It's not jailbroken. So isn't it now unlocked for good? Wonder why Apple had to do this nonsense in the first place.

My bad DXB is Dubai

And its not apple but the telecom operator that sells these phones, so it comes bundled with contract either post paid or pre-paid which can be cancelled as soon as the purchase is done.

United Arab Emirates phones are unlocked, am quite sure about this.

Right. My bad actually .

I do, however, sometimes get a notification saying "Cannot activate cellular network", though it doesn't affect my phone in any way. I badly want iOS 5, and hope it doesn't screw up my phone. I am not very intent on jailbreaking yet. (I've jailbroken my IPT though).

Re: The iPhone Thread: Update iOS 5 announced!

Cannot activate cell network is because the APN setting for cellular data is not updated in phone OR if it is only intermittent then bad signal or cell network. Basically it means your EDGE/GPRS/3G is not connecting at that point of time.

But isn't that related to the cellular data pop up? I get two different pop ups. The one regarding cellular data when I try browsing without Wi-Fi (I don't have EDGE/3G). This other warning was "cannot activate cellular network"- exact words. I just tap the OK button and carry on. Nothing abnormal happens though. Phone works just fine.

Re: The iPhone Thread: Update iOS 5 announced!

I think its a settings issue, so even when you use phone if some app is trying to access data in the background it pops up.

Re: The iPhone Thread: Update iOS 5 announced!

Guys

How come you got itunes 10.5, just updated my itunes - it was 10.2.2, says thats the latest

Am on windows and not Mac - is that the issue here?

BTW - I too have the Dubai phone - but am sorting my MTNL card related issues here, should do it by weekend.

Prior to that it worked fine for 3-4 days, got it last week - Etisalat Carrier, also havent upgraded the phone to 4.3.3 that is available. It says it will take some 16 hours to download.....phew!!

OT - Has anyone tried to get CYDIA from limera1n (some dude Mahesh Kukreja has jailbroken the same for almost all of iPhones version 1/2/3/4 and even iPad - so his website says)

Jaggu I presume you know this

Ah thanks for the tip. I'll wait for the untethered one. Tethered ones are quite obnoxious.
